Good grief people. This has been a tradition since 1989 with roots back to at least the 60's. The turkey is generally donated & presented to the president (a longer tradition) and it and an alternate are chosen from birth and trained to handle the crowds and cameras. It's a brief and lighthearted cutsie tradition and dropping everything fun because the county is having a hard time.... is hardly reasonable or worthwhile. Deep breath people.

National Thanksgiving Turkey Presentation is a ceremony that takes place at the White House every year. Since 1989 during the first Thanksgiving of President George H. W. Bush, the president has granted the turkey a "presidential pardon" and thus spared the bird from being slaughtered.
It's just a silly, meaningless tradition that the president does every Thanksgiving.
