Why did you go to an SAE bolt instead of staying with metric? Was there mot enough room to take fitting 10mm bolts? I know this is going on a custom build, but as a mechanic myself when I run across SAE bolts in a metric engine,I usually find them as part of a hack repair. Those were pretty nice looking head bolts though, nicely flanged and shouldered.
On my 151 Pontiac I opened the holes from 7/16th to 1/2 inch . Using ARP studs I can torque to 105 lbs on the head studs. The asshat machinest after being told to use the tap and helicoils I provided used his own stuff and put in undersized helicoils and the bastard charged me $15 x 10 holes, $150 for a screwed up job that I had to have fixed at a different shop. let's not talk about how bad he messed up the cylinder head :P
that generation of engine, regardless. they all need stuff like this. I literally broke all intake bolts off a subaru..all bolts. same processs, drill tap, widen intake holes...of course american, and you can machine thread tap if to doubt the hole being too big.

Do you still "Wire ring" Blocks for Increased pressures or do you not need to nowadays cos of gaskets being better? : )
MrGuvEuroman 2 years ago
This is something that can actually be w/o removing the block. O-rings do work, no doubt about it, but so do the larger head bolts.

Ever thought of throwing a turbo on yours John?

Na, that would put me into some crazy class with cars that are waaaay faster. Turbos are fun, though!
