catching a big gar is just as good as catching a big pike............look how much alike they look..........................just a tip to anyone who cares.....lonesome creek in roundrock t.x........is loaded with ones bigger than this. water so clear you can see right down to them.
they are good to eat, although hard to skin, but its like all muscle, the only bony part really is the backbone, but if you skin it right, you'll have two huge stripes of meat that you can fillet or cut into steaks
get a small perch with a small treble hook .... hook the perch in the tail... put on a bobber with about 4 inches to the bait... let them take it... usally they will haul ass with it... but at this point its just in his boney mouth so you cant really hook them.... sooner or later they will stop... this is when they actually eat the fish.. when the start to take off again set the hook... Works all the time for me
"The genus name Lepisosteus comes from the Greek lepis meaning "scale" and osteon meaning "bone"."
Sure buddy, their genus name has the Greek meaning of bone in it, but they're not boney. You're a regular Steve Irwin over there. Go feed your goldfish and leave the big fish to the big boys.
how did you catch this gar. there was a 5ft gator gar in an underwater light behind my dad's house in Galveston the other night but it wouldnt even look at anything i threw at it. I tried dead shrimp, gulp, and even chicken.
one time when i was fishing some old dude came and casted his line and hooked an alligator gar by the gills when it drifted by and did not know what it was and if you could eat them lol
Hmm. Lots of needle nose from what I'm seeing in the lake's reservoir thing. I bow fish down in the sides of the lake on the edges of the lake next to 78 (close to Copeville more/less).
By the way: I don't bow fish the gar- they seem to have a place here. Only the carp (more of a trash/parasite fish). Just been trying to figure out a way to bait/hook gar. I'll have to try the nylon string- they seem to be breeding atm (don't know if it's the right time to fish at) -as the carp eat their eggs.
Is gar fishing a big fight? And what do you use for bait? I live in North Eastern Texas and theres a ton of gar in Lake Lavon rolling on the shore... Any ideas on how to catch em?
I bow fish out here on Lavon where I live. Shot a few needle nose gar. Not much fun in shooting gar b/c they don't care much for my presence. My shadow can fall right on top of the them and they won't swim away at all. It's near impossible to get an arrow out of their plated skeleton.
Carp however are more of a challenge to shoot, more of a trash fish imo, and kill of game fish populations. I'll shoot tons of carp a day in my spot...
Just thought pulling in a gar by pole would be uber cool.
@rsuriyop im from south texas and you can fish for katan(alligator gar) in alot of places down here and man o man it makes very good eating the sad part is its only 1 a day limit

Also it's easier to get an arrow out of carp... You can easily cut them in half without dulling your knife like you would on a gar.
psychoninja911 3 years ago
do people actually eat those things?
rsuriyop 4 years ago
Actually yes. Supposedly some people love them.
I just booked a guy from Missouri that fishes for gar exclusively for the meat.

@ktomek06 gar meat has the texture of chicken, not very flavorful but you do get a lot of meat out of one fish. Very lean as well

@ktomek06 bullshit
johannrecht67 6 months ago
Their meat is delicous but very boney as you might imagine. The best way to cook/eat them is to cut them into fillets and smoke 'em.
