My friends and I were riding back through Loch Lomond in Scotland when we came across about 10 miles of slow moving (10mph) or stationary traffic, we were overtaking/filtering on the off side on a normal country roads through this traffic when we came across a Strathclyde Police Traffic car also caught in the traffic jam, I overtook aprox 15 mph filtering on their off side would this move be legal, Much like the roads you are on in this video.
As an Advanced Police Driver I find posting videos like this irresponsible. I agree nobody is perfect but the cross roads sign is clearly visible. There is no mention of the cross view which suggests he has missed the sign as he had tunnel vision when going for the overtake. Poor riding!
Yes,you are 100% correct here Nigel, there is no such thing as the perfect driver/rider.Despite the occasional mistake,(which we all make)there is a lot of relevent points in these videos, that if put into practise, can make you a better rider, and could potentially save your life.
If you are going to post an advanced drive on YouTube, check there is no mistakes on it before posting. You obviously did not notice the crossroads,as you did not comment on the advance warning sign, poor observation that could of had potentially fatal consequencies if a car had pulled out from the road on the right, without looking left.....
Thanks for the comment. I am afraid if I check vry video post for mistakes, I would have none to post. The vids on Youtube are not to illustrate the 'perfect' rider, because there is not one. I can see where you are coming from, but the vids do generate the interest with feedback and riders do benefit from them.
Hey Nigel apart from the mistake, that I hasten to add to all the experts, you got away with, this is a good example. I suspect that most of the people pointing out your mistake are the ones that complain about caravans spoiling their rides. I dare say that most of them would not have even got past the tanker.
Overtaking at crossroads?.. potentially suicidal. You are totally committed and could not abort as you were level with the trucks etc. Wouldn't be in my riding.
you have right of way to all traffic coming from both left and right so in theory you should be safe if a car was to approach and looked. But we all know they don't so it is a little risky. I still do it though. :-p
Hi, just look at the distance between you and the van at 02:22. Its murderously too close. If he hits brakes you are over the top. Also throughout the video , what if someone comes out from the right when you have are overtaking-- a tractor , a child?.
You would have nowhere to go.
I started riding when I was 12 (off road ) and have riden ever since and now I'm over 60 with no accidents so think I know whats safe and whats not. This is silly risk taking.
My guess is that firstly the camera does not give an accurate sense of speed and distance, and secondly, it has a vastly narrower field of vision than the rider himself. I doubt that anybody who used to be a Police Advanced riding instructor would put themselves in to these 'risky' positions without having thought it through carefully. You cannot eliminate risk from riding/driving. Do you suggest that you never overtake just in case something unforseen happens?
A simplistic view about Police bikes :-( Police vehicles don't always have their lights flashing, and to be honest, most of the time they're hardly any more visible in a rear view mirror than ordinary bikes. In fact, advanced driving/riding is designed to be used by any motorist no matter what vehicle they are in. Perhaps you ought to read 'Roadcraft (Police driving/riding manuals) and then watch the videos again. :-)
You gave this title, not the public, and as demo video it lets you down. I really think you ought to critically review these many videos before posting, I've bit my tongue until now but there are less experienced people than yourself out there who may take these as examples of something to aim for, rather than a level of competence to progress beyond. Why not use a clip from a better day out, then dub your commentary?
And now, just as you did, I have run out of space but mine's not fatal.
I feel that the overtake should not have taken place immediately following the junction warning. However, as you say, we viewers don't see the fill picture!
Usual excellent instruction but did I see two overtakes at crossroads? I always wait when I see side or crossroad signs until I have passed the signed roads just in case vehicles in front decide to turn right at last minute without indicators Thanks for great Videos, keep them coming.
While the tanker had little option but to cut across the solid white line on the roundabout I felt you should have been able to avoid it.
The subsequent overtake on the pickup while approaching a crossroads seemed a bit of a risk, though I appreciate your view would have differed from that of the camera.
Thanks for the feedback, I just knew when I posted the vid that the junction would come up. The view into the junction was clear and the speed of the pickup and vehicle in front gave me no concern for my safety. It was a 'Good' junctio because of the 'Cheshire' fencing. I am looking at adding an additional helmet mounted camera next year to ytry and film these hazards better.
very smooth overtake nigel , gotta get a ride with you somtime now am back in uk

Another great video Nigel - - I hate You Tube experts :-( Grrrrrr
As you pointed out there is NO such thing as the perfect rider.
I for one have been on rides and done things ...where I have sat down and thought that was silly or should have held back alittle more...
When these You Tube experts have the balls to upload videos of themselves maybe we can see how it should be done :-)

Hi,I dont want to annoy anyone but I have looked again and he is TOOO close to the van.
Whats the mad rush? I do suggest that although you cant eliminate risk, you certainly reduce it. Driving too close makes it more risky.
Dont be fooled by the Police Advance Riding bit- the Police signs, bikes , flashing lights make other user get out the way.
I have blue chequers on my white helmet and for years no-one has pulled out in front of me.
