What's incredible to me about Carlock is that he is getting better! He's still a young guy too -- I'd put him mid to late 30's. It's not a copy of Gadd's original solo but the both times I saw The Dan live he played it differently. He's made this song his own and just kills it. He can go from killing a solo like he does to playing with a deft touch that makes him an all time great -- and he's just getting started.
Great single shot quality. . . real joy to listen to. . . . There is an earlier version with Carlock playing the solo (2003 I think) and he has really grown into this track. Challenge is that you have to play behind the beat for most of the song until you get to the solos, and then you have to play ahead of it. Very tough to do. . . Totally nails it in this performance.
Youtube must have upgraded their servers as there is now an option to watch in 720p. It looks awesome in fullscreen , not choppy in any way if you have a robust connection. I still think this is one of the best captures of the full range that SD gets in their live shows. Carlock gives me chills, he's one of the best drummers playing today. More vids from this show will be posted soon.
Keith Carlock plays so deep in the pocket you can't go any deeper. What a beautiful player he is. He inspires countless drummers and musicians worldwide.
In Row AA of the loge which is the very front of the balcony. Probably the best seats at the Chicago theater for such a large stage band like Steely Gan. Cam was on a short 6 inch tripod.
@chiphotoguy it looks goood from that roow.. I was asking 'cause I'm gonna be in row CC for Lady Gaga's show :) were u on the center? I'm gonna be on 2L
It was center. There are only 3 rows in the Loge, AA, BB, CC. There are no bad seats there as It hangs well over the main floor and you will have an awesome view of the stage. Have a cool time. Bring a camera that can video but be discreet. Just watch the ushers.
I set the camera in autoexposure but it was an amazing lightshow by SD that had a very wide range of levels. During Keith;'s solo they just blast him with a strobe of spotlights, hence the "glow". I like it.
this band has all the best of the best musicians in it but I have to say when I first saw Carlock in 2006 I knew that Steely Dan was the best band of all of the 70's bands!
Love it - there's me thinking the Canon G9 was a still camera! Let me know if I have missunderstood something there. Lovely all the same. thanks for posting.
hi people you may not belive me when i tell you this, but i am named after this song! yup! my name is Aja. thank you Steely Dan for writeing a great song and giving my name that i am most honeored to have!
I couldn't believe it when the Think Fast tour announced a Canandaigua NY show. It was the BEST concert that this area has ever seen. Absolutely amazing.
Great video, if you neeed any hope getting your video/ channel exposed i use a site called Tubeviews . Net It has helped 5 of my videos get ranked on the first pages.
The show was on Jul 15th 2008 at the Chicago theater. I was in the front row of the Loge, it was awesome. Best sound and lights I've seen in a long time.
Saw this performance four nights prior to the Chicago show. Warm summer night, Fingerlakes breeze, the Cuervo gold, the fine columbian...Man what a treat.

I love keith's playing on aja, very reminiscent of gadd's playing on the album, great groove, nice work on the ride and hats

Keith just knocks this one out of the park. His chunky style is perfect for this song. I saw this tour in NYC and he was great!!

I'd really like to see Ben Stiller come out on stage as Hassidic Joaquin Phoenix and bang out some Mu chords on Donald's keyboard

id seen 'tubes of carlock
w/ winwood&clapstone @ msg
and thought 'no big'
but this is a jaw-dropping display of drums&percussion virtuosity
to get that far 'in' to a groove is actually scary
listening i thought 'man what if he loses it - the beat &or time - and it
can happen to pros too
but not to worry mr carlock went all the way in blasting and came out the same way
what a courageous badass display of greatness
stunning musicianship nay artistry!

I agree. We all like Steve Gadd; he's great, but I actually prefer Carlock's interpretation And this is a particularly vicious performance of Aja.
