Tommy Douglas was a great man who did great things that have made Canada a much better place to live. He and those who have worked with him have done so much good. Thank you for posting this clip from the movie -such a important movie- Prarie Giant, The Tommy Douglas story. It is one of my favorite films because it shows how much good can be done for so many and I know it is real and true because I live in Canada and have used the health care system and also many other's too...thank God for it.
This isn't about the black cats, the white cats and the mice, this is about the fact that all of the above stole their land from the indigenous populations, the incorrectly named 'Indians', perhaps the Indigenous tribes should become dogs to kick-out the lying, thieving cats, and mice. Sterling!
Thank You For Replying; Using the metaphor of mouse versus cat, creates a negative imagery, via anthropomorphizing the problem. As 11 September 2001 clearly shows, the problem is bullies hiding behind the socially acceptable religions, versus people which know civilization by heart. One wonders how Tommy Davidson would have changed his mind about his metaphors after 11 September 2001?
Thank You For Replying; A silly joke, to point out the problems with identifying one group of people with 'mice', and another with 'cats'. Considering what is now know about the 11 September 2001 attacks, would Tommy Douglas Change his ideas to a more atheistic platform? Most likely.
; This metaphor of 'cats, and mice', is ambiguous, and excludes the indigenous population which lived free in Canada for thousands of years before the 'cats, and mice' stole their land, and that is the problem.
@12Zwolf the cat/mice metaphor is about who has power and groups that can form about this various groups, IMHO. And I think Tommy is trying to convey idea, think about who they elect to represent them. And that they do have power to elect rep that best serve their interests. And this is what politicians do. And I believe politicians typically do care about people. And sometimes the people need to find representative to represent them. And sometimes there is need to negotiate/compromise.
Stealing land from the indigenous people, murdering them, then forcing them onto concentration camps, re-named 'Indian Reservations', created three-hundred years on before Hitler was conceived, isn't compromise.
@12Zwolf I have agree what was done to the first people here is just an other chapter out of the same book. And it is repulsive and disgusting. Rich white men still want it all. If europeans would have learned from the original "Canadians" then our world would still be beautiful and healthy but instead they mowed it all down and now we are in trouble, having sold the bottom out of our lifeboat.
He is man who's dream, who's vision, who's reality is being attacked and torn apart at the seems, He was voted the Greatest Canadian and that was not a fluke. Lets defend our greatest Canadian and Unite Once More, not for ourselves, not for our individuality, but for each other, our children, our future, don't let the dream of Tommy Douglas die, let live and let it prosper.
Yes.. him, and Benjamin Franklin are 3 of the greatest people in North America. Ben Franklin and Tommy Douglas would have probably been good friends if they were alive in the same era. Ben Franklin was, among other things was known, for being one of the founders of the first public libraries in the world. Created the first public fire departments, first public Univerisities(I believe) University of Penn.
He is an amazing person. And upon further research on his life, it becomes apparent that he did much more than make universal health care available to Canadians. Among the things he accomplished included, but not limited to, equality of education for all, air amublance service, first to introduce budget bureau for long-term planning,...
...government insurance, collective bargaining for all workers, first Arts Board in Canada, Farm Security Act, right to vote at age 18, 8 hour a day/5 day/week/paid holiday for workers, 1st bill of rights Canada, 1sth Small Claims Cour, etc.
@sharukh1 Absolutely, Now Stephen Harper wants to dismantle it and has been slowly doing it bit by bit hoping the public doesn't notice... And it's up to us alone to stop them... It's about time this foolish country started to admit who they are and make things better for themselves instead of continually polishing the shoes of our oppressors because we bought the dream that someday we could be one of them and vote according to OUR interests not those of Corporate and banking psychopaths.
@OscarLimaMike ; All the ruin of indigenous people is brought about by the socially acceptable religions, this new wave of Muhammadanism is a continuation of the the same religious violence, and genocide. Get rid of the religion, get rid of the problems.

It seems that in this case the indeginous people would be in the category of mice as well.

@12Zwolf Yes, arguing over who's oppression is greater is always an effective strategy for progress.

Wished we had an NDP type party here in America.
