I've been to Johannesburg, and I have to say that it's a scary place to be alone in. Those bullets are really the only thing keeping the criminality as low as possible (which is incredibly high). I was 16 when being there, almost got raped when entering a secured bank, had to keep our heads down when driving through a black neighbourhood. Odd, but you really need to be there to understand how serious it actually is.
