Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe the 80 billion dollars in savings is not due to price cuts but calculated from savings achieved from slower price increases. So in the end big pharma won't be losing anything they already have but only "giving back" money they have yet to charge while prices will still continue going up, only at a slightly lower pace...or so they say. I mean, they can just say they intended raising prices by 13% but charge only 10% though they wanted 10%all along.
If they try to start co-ops instead of providing a government OPTION, the for-profit health insurance companies will only buy the co-ops out, and we will be right back where we started. My UHC Pharm sent me a letter yesterday. They don't like brand name meds, and will no longer pay for brand name meds. I DO NOT MEAN that they substitute a generic when available. I DO MEAN that if there is no generic available, you must either pay for the brand name med yourself, or switch to a different medicine altogether. Doesn't matter if you're allergic, or if the other med has not worked in the past. They are not paying for brand names anymore. He has $744 billion in stock. I have 2 Advil.

If the administration and doctors really push for preventative medicine, then I would be ok with this deal. The money won't go back into pham companies and save money in treatments, and reduce dependence on pharm.
To say that public healthcare will be less efficient is absurd. Being a citizen in New Zealand, we have free public healthcare, we don't waste our money on healthcare insurance, to me thats efficiency. Those that want a higher level of healthcare in NZ (not many people do as the standard is worldclass) just need to purchase cheap ($60US) private notforprofit healthcare insurance, & that will ensure you a higher quality and faster service when you need it

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe the 80 billion dollars in savings is not due to price cuts but calculated from savings achieved from slower price increases. So in the end big pharma won't be losing anything they already have but only "giving back" money they have yet to charge while prices will still continue going up, only at a slightly lower pace...or so they say. I mean, they can just say they intended raising prices by 13% but charge only 10% though they wanted 10%all along.

If they try to start co-ops instead of providing a government OPTION, the for-profit health insurance companies will only buy the co-ops out, and we will be right back where we started. Big Pharma was happy to help kill the government option because they are charging more than they should for Rx - and if the government got into the insurance option, they would soon find ways to force the prices of Rx down. There was no "option" in HR3200 or HR676. The people being paid are the ones for the bill. PhRma and AHIP, the two largest lobbying groups for pharma cos and insurance cos. They wanted those bills through because pharma benefits by having 50 million new customers and the insurance companies get to sell us their customers to offset the derivatives they are highly vested in before that market collapses in 2011 - 2013.

I tried to give the Democrats a fair chance, and that is why I voted for Obama in the past election. If Obama compromises with the pharmaceutical industry (as he is being accused of), and completely discards with the public option, I will vote for a third party candidate, regardless of how unlikely it is that such a candidate will win the presidency. For the Obama administration, and for the Democratic controlled Congress to concede like this, amounts to an unforgivable betrayal.

With negotiations that any other big buyer gets of 50% this would have been a saving of 1.5 trillion over 10 years. My UHC Pharm sent me a letter yesterday. They don't like brand name meds, and will no longer pay for brand name meds. I DO NOT MEAN that they substitute a generic when available. I DO MEAN that if there is no generic available, you must either pay for the brand name med yourself, or switch to a different medicine altogether. Doesn't matter if you're allergic, or if the other med has not worked in the past. They are not paying for brand names anymore. He has $744 billion in stock. I have 2 Advil.

if you could go to Canada and just buy all the generic prescriptions you needed and bring them back, wouldn't that put a dent in the Big Pharma profits unless they found a way to compete. Its the government that makes those laws to prevent us from getting better prices. Consider patents on life saving drugs or procedures. A patent is okay for music or something, but if you invent the cure for cancer, should you really be able to patent it in order to keep the price high?

I just don't see how you think that taxes ever translate into savings. even if the program works, you have to pay the salaries of the congress who passed the laws, the employees who run the program, and unfortunately, you don't have any control over the money you pay once it gets to the gov. You think you pay for social security but when they need money for a war, they dip into that fund, why would a nationalized health care plan be any different?

To say that public healthcare will be less efficient is absurd. Being a citizen in New Zealand, we have free public healthcare, we don't waste our money on healthcare insurance, to me thats efficiency. Those that want a higher level of healthcare in NZ (not many people do as the standard is worldclass) just need to purchase cheap ($60US) private notforprofit healthcare insurance, & that will ensure you a higher quality and faster service when you need it

Thanks for sharing that very clear-headed information and interpretation. Yeah, Americans go into EVERY election saying, "We know we aren't gonna get most of what we want, but the important thing is to keep the worse choice out." And the results of that thinking reverberate thru the following 4-8 years. I believe our expectations have been pushed down deliberately so we keep BELIEVING we have the best of everything, and we just keep bearing declining standards of living.

Exactly! Privatized services drop whole departments that are not profitable, cut off customers who are inconvenient to them, and slash service/raise prices when their investors get restless. Who will do rural deliveries for an affordable price? Not for-profit services! They don't even want those customers.

the problem with the usps is that they are irrelvant at this point. emails and private industry has killed them.............they cant be competitive because of the private industry being cheaper. on the other hand, public option healthcare will be cheaper because private insurance is out of fucking control. the failure of an agency cannot reflect the govt as a whole, i should know, i used to work for the federal govt.

i understand that every other western country has some form of socialized medicine and they are ALL more efficient that what we got and cheaper. France's healthcare only takes up about 9% of their GDP and ours is astronomically higher. Even republicans like Issa and Hamilton on Bill Maher said they were more efficient. Private industry overhead is 30% while medicare is 1-3%......its a no brainer

I'm from Norway and there is not a treatment in the world my government wouldn't give me if I was ill, for free!
If I'm so sick I'm home from work, my government will pay me FULL salary for a full year, if necessary, while i recover.
So what can you offer? Why should I give that up?
If you truly believe US has better HC than EU, Canada, Japan, Australia ect, you are a damned fool!
Of course the one with the biggest budget invent the most stuff. Sad the people cant afford all this stuff.

Norway is AWESOME! i'm an american and i when i was a little girl my dad got really really sick. We had rented a gite out in the middle of nowhere. The ambulance came straight to us, whisked him to a specialist hospital three hours away--clear on the other side--had him in the ER and ICU for three days. And said, we're sorry, but you'll need to pay for the bill before we release you you'll have to pay. my dad groaned and thought that he need to drop THOUSANDS.....grand total: $60. THANKS NORWAY!
