  • This is an interesting tape. It reveals that Paul was "punched in" a few times, and it sounds like the punch ins were recorded on different days, because the EQ settings are different. Did anyone else here that? It wouldn't suprise me, being as the Beatles used 'cut and paste' editing thru out their recording career (Strawberry Feilds, Glass Onion, Yer Blues...) Makes me wonder how much of this technique they used

  • spider...dumb for you...quite cool para nosotros...¿no?

  • This is the best Bass line for me.

  • I never realized that the bass has such a huge role in the melody of the song.

  • What a dumb waste of bandwidth.

  • I read somewhere and I totally agree that this is the BEST BASS LINE in all Beatles catalog. True?

  • @circlemaker Either this or Drive My Car.

  • @MadSpectro7 I truly think this piece is a lot more complicated than drive my car, plus has more rhytm...we talking about 3 years of more progresive music since that in '65 and this '68.

  • Paul's bass playing really came into the mix when the Beatles got really good. This is up there with James Jamerson.

  • one of there best songs yet one of there least known since it was on the yellow submarine album

  • @conallmcluskie Agree. Always thought that....

  • FROM BRAZIL

COULD YOU PLEASE POST THE BASS ON "HONEY DON'T"?

  • incredible!

  • God, the bass is out of tune---this has to be the guide track or something. I can't believe it was used for the final track!!!

  • @Armydicked Yet, in the track it sounds perfect. Such is the genius playing of Paul.

  • Realmente increible....solo Paul podria tocar asi el bajo....yeeeaahh!!!! Que programa usaste para separar el sonido...?? saludos!

  • Pretty awesome! Too bad they didn't have recording technology we have today. Thanks for posting!

  • I love this. I'm going to learn this. This is fucking amazing.

  • Amazing! One of my favorite Beale songs too! Thanks!

  • what can i say just fantastic, just love this.any beatles tracks with just piano track like hey jude & let it be.

  • what program do you use?

  • Paul's bass does sound out of tune on some isolated tracks, but not in the mix. I'm sure if this was a problem, SIr George Martin would have heard and corrected it. All you need is ears!

  • Great early recording trick here, when the guitar is doing the main riff it sounds like they roll off the highs and mids so not to occupy the guitar aural "space" making it more pronounced.

  • OOHhh Yeah! Paul and that bass are brothers!

  • i don't know how anybody can write bass lines like this. mccartney is either genius or this has something to do with the fact that he's a right handed person playing his instrument in a left-handed manner as if it were a trumpet.

  • ima learn this shit. SIR PAUL, YOU ARE THE MAN!

  • Interesting that the strings are slightly out of key. But other than that McCartney could be called a kind of Bach on the bass. It is instinctual with him. The bass is both a percussion instrument and a vehicle for counterpunctal or contrasrting harmonies. Not only that, but seems to be able to make dissonance logical and satisfying to the ear.

  • @rogerscottq

Just yesterday I was listening to isolated tracks from 'Band on the Run', and noticed that some of the guitars are not tuned very well. At the point where the vocals are "If I ever get out of here..." Go to paulmccartney "dot" com, click "Music", and scroll down to "Launch Rude Studio".

  • my soul has changed after listening to paul's isolated bass line

  • its the Ricken 4001 S

  • Comment removed

  • I guess its his Ricken... not his holy grail Hofner

  • I love this bassline! I wish I were skillful enough to play it. I even more wish I were skillful enough to write something like that!

  • Did paul use the basic tuning for this ricken?

  • @zeromant80 Yes, it's standard tuning.

  • @zeromant80

yes but the tape was sped up or down during mastering so you'll have to detune your bass slightly to be in tune with the record

  • muito loko

  • sick beat! nice sound!

  • I know it's the Rick played with DI. My question is: is that a pick on flatwound strings?

  • @copeland45 it's with a pick. At least that's what it looks like in the video

  • @InsaneNightmarePanda It is with a pick, you can hear that by listening to the little 'click' as I like to call every time he hits a string. I also think in most cases Paul played with a plectrum as he was originally a guitarist.

  • @copeland45 oh yeah you can feel that they're flat wound

  • @copeland45

McCartney uses a pick all the time so I would guess, and there's to much attack for it to be fingers

  • This isn't fake guys, he obviously ripped it from Beatles Rock Band.

  • It sounds just like my old Hamer CruiseBass with flat wound strings.

  • it's fake!

  • wish there was a love button!! I am already obsessed with the bass line for this song, LOVE it isolated!!! XD

  • I think it was more compressed on the final mix.

    Amazing, thanks!

  • Hofner´s Sound!

  • @GORFF987 i think he used the rickenbacker for this one

  • @GORFF987 Paul used his Rick. on this song.

  • BEST BASS SONG EVER

  • I'm willing to bet money its from Rock Band Beatles. And its no secret they havent always (if ever) used the studio-take of the songs used. Same in Rock Band 3. Its still the original artists just not always the studio-take.

  • Sorry guys, but this is the actual bass track... remember, in the final take, in some parts, the bass volume is turned down, just like in "Helter Skelter" and "Michelle"

  • wow! hes really good!

  • holy shit that sounds so fucking amazing :O

  • good call uploading these videos

  • If this is Paul, it is not the bass track ultimately used on the record. There are differences. I've listened to the finished product too many times not to recognize this as different.

  • can you get "everybodys got something to hide" iso bass?

  • this is fake!!!! sorry but after listining to this song about 6000 times since 1968 you just can tell

  • Ah Paul!!!

  • Epic bass playing as always from Macca.

  • dude thats 100% for sure paul playing that rickenbacker. just listen to that bounciness.

  • @bobyoung53 Ok thank you. I didn't know he played a Rick in the Yellow Submarine album.

  • @doudsbass He played a Rick on a lot of songs.

  • @shakedownstreet48 Thank you ^^

  • this made me sick!!

  • I don't know how anyone can think this is a fake. If you're a bass player and a beatles fan, it's pretty evident this is THE original.

  • Does he play with palmute in this song ?

  • @doudsbass yes i believe

  • They could release the whole album with the best bass lines only and still it would beat anything on the charts today.

  • Cool as fuck! nothing else to say

  • I listen this like every day now.. It's so cool and I love Paul.

  • rickenbacker does recieve request of owns modifications to intruments? because in that case, im going to request that bass!

  • Great song driven by great bass...

  • Reminds me why I started to learn bass to begin with....

  • @dm3830 Sorry, It's a real isolated track.

  • @dm3830 I doubt very much this track is fake for the sole reason that nobody but McCartney can play like that.

  • @dm3830 I doubt very much this track is fake for the sole reason that nobody but McCartney can play like that.

  • @dm3830 Are you saying that because frequencies were EQ'd out at times so that the occasional overdubbed guitar and snare hits that this track shares (I assume) won't be heard?

  • this is amazing

  • Incredible. I recall a Macca interview when he was saying that in the sixties the worst job in a British band was for the bass player, in terms of public respect, cuz nobody was giving a damn on the bass guy. In fact he started on guitar, and afterwards he made the shift on bass, but not being very enthusiastic about this. In 10 years bass players became Gods of Rock.

  • God damn.

  • Those drum sounds from 1:00 are ace! :D

  • Where'ere this was ripped fro. (where's the rips from "rip this joint"?), it is one of the best bass tracks period. It exactly accomplishes Paul's desire for a great bass sound. Capitol gets mean by shoving it all the way to the left(?) with the single o/d snare, period!

It just means extra parts for me to learn. Let's see if someone can pluck Carol Kayes bass part out "I Was Made To Love

Love " from the Beach Bespohk

  • @fenderbacker1 then I guess you're one of the lucky ones. what is your rick, a 4001 or 4003?

  • Tabs?

  • @SDCParrot Why does no-one on YouTube know how to use Google?

  • That funny particular clammy Rick with flatwounds sound :) Unbelievable. Thank you for posting this.

  • Man, those Rickenbacker basses sound good, but damn are they a pain to keep in tune and playing nicely!

  • @bassharmonica1 I totally agree about the sound, but I've never had any tuning or playability issues with mine.

  • @bassharmonica1 If you're having issues with your Rickenbacker staying in tune you may want to take it to be set up, because I have a 4003 in Fireglo and the McCartney 4001c64s, and both NEVER go out of tune especially with the double truss rod system!!!!

  • @ironcitydevildog wawawawawawawawawawawawawa waiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit, they make a Paul McCartney signature Rickenbacker. Why didnt anybody tell me this?

  • @bassharmonica1 They discontinued it in 2009. You can find them on ebay for close to $4000. Its a Rickenbacker 4001 c64/c64s/ The c64 is finished whith fireglo paint and unsidedown headstock for righties to represent the lefties, and looks like the bass that presented to Paul at the hollywood bowl in 1965, and how it was oon Rubber Soul and Revolver before he painted the psychadelics on it. However mine the c64s has the horns cut out and looks sanded just like in Wings!!!!!

  • Thanks for this. it makes much easier to figure out how to play Hey Bulldog.

  • @alfosa3 or just listen to one head phone

  • This is amazing :) Paul is a bass god <3

  • Yep.

  • How did u separate these? Did u use rockband?

  • @Shakeyj100 In any case he used equalization to cancel out any other instruments. but the changing tone of the bass in some of the parts is a result of changing cancelled-out frequencies where other instruments would come into the same range. Hear how different the main riff sounds from the bass part during the vocals: because the lead guitar is in the same frequency range there. It's a bit like those "Vocalizers" where you can cancel out the vocals and use the record as a karaoke backing track.

  • @SvOekel No, he ripped it from the Beatles Rockband .ogg files which have about 10 channels you can separate indivudually.

  • @kewkabe Yeah, but then the makers of Rockband messed about with the frequencies, didn't they? Mark Lewisohn clearly states in The Complete Beatles Recording Sessions (page 135): "Recorded on straight four track, without any reduction mixes". So the original multi-track didn't have enough tracks to"remix" to 10 channels for Rockband. You hear the sound of the bass changing at all points where the guitar riff comes in. A clear sign they filtered out the guitar from the track.
