This is very difficult for me to listen to. It was playing when I was holding my dying cat the entire day when I had to put her down. I was alone and it was one of the most painful days of my life. I still cry when I hear this. But it's such a beautiful piece (all of it). And yes, parts of it were made into All By Myself but that song, while popular pales to nothing in comparison to this haunting and lilting lovely piece. If you're young consider: classical music has shaped much modern music.
@murasaki9 A person with a loving heart .... she was lucky to share her life with you and have it end held within the arms that cared so much for her.
"All by Myself" is a power ballad written and performed by Eric Carmen in 1975.
The verse is based on the second movement (Adagio Sostenuto) of Sergei Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor, Opus 18. The chorus borrows from the song "Let's Pretend" that Carmen had written for the Raspberries in 1973.
One of the more notable cover versions of "All by Myself" was recorded by Céline Dion in 1996.
I saw the ASO with Horatio Guttierrez play this a month ago and was the most beautiful gorgeous piece of music I have ever heard. (and still can't stopthinking about it) I love this piece. Kissin is excellent.
@hedgehogdude123 Рахманиновъ transcribed his name Rachmaninoff when living in the West but I guess 'Rachmaninov' is more common, so ... what is correct? Рахманиновъ! And with latin script just get used to more ways of spelling his name.
3:12 to the end and especially 5:04 to the end has to rank as THE most beautiful and romantic music ever composed---the standard by which All other slow movements must be judged. Indeed the whole concerto sets a standard for quality that no other composer of concertos including Rachmaninoff himself ever surpassed.

@JoeTownley Very true, but as a guitarist I think Rodrigo's Concierto De Aranjuez's second movement is a close contender. I think both composers when they wrote these movements that they put all their woes and anxieties into music unlike any other. In a romantic sense, they are both amazing, but Rachmaninoff definitely takes the cake. XD
Ill give you credit for allowing them to quit when they wanted to, but I'd like to hope sending them to school just so you could have one perform this piece for you wasn't the only reason. I've been through that kind of stuff enough to know what kind of impact it has on children.
IF Rachmaninoff is watching this from somewhere above then i have this to say to him"It ,s not just the music that you give us as the legacy but also the civilization of the mankind's spirit.THANK YOU.
IF Rachmaninoff is watching this from somewhere above then i have this to say to him"It ,s not just the music that you give us as the legacy but also the civilization of the mankind's spirit.
This is the most expressive performance of this beautiful masterwork that I have EVER heard. 3:11 to the end is so amazing and made me cry. 5:04 makes my heart melt <3
@darkkerrigan Have you listened to the Weissenberg/Karajan live recording? That is my absolute favorite performance of the concert. However, Kissing does a good job too, I like it too.
One must presume that the aduience went nuts just after this video was cut?
Call me childish but I do like to see the applause after a performance as good as that just to make sure the orchestra and the soloists get what they deserve.
@Ced12481632 I am aware of that, however there are times when an audience's decorum fails and their appreciation boils over. It is often accompanied by tutting from humour less cummerbund wearing people who forget why they are there.
I have seen people burst into applause halfway through a movement before such was the quality of what we just witnessed. I forget what it was. I smiled deep within my soul. The rather plummy chap in front of me was incandescent with rage. We were both right
@mog505 Orchestral music concerts are the only live performances where audience participation/appreciation is condemned! It is protocol to remain silent, until the last note has wrung it's last, but it is not natural.
@123jsbach I agree totally. However I have been to more than one orchestral performance where the audience was not able to maintain order throughout. Sometimes convention has to give way to popular opinion. Eventually the tuts drown out the flapping together of audience flippers anyway.
@mog505 Took me a minute or two to work out what the flipping and flappers were! Lol! I wonder though if orchestral concerts were a little less stuffy people would be more inclined to attend and appreciate it? Mind you; there's always YouTube for them! Yayy for youtube! I must admit I would not be civil to someone coughing in my ear or singing along to e.g. Rachmaninov in a live concert!
i wonder why the Rach 2 first movement by Kissin was watched 1.5 million time but this one only close to 144,000? Maybe some people cannot find the second movement?
this music is so incredibly marvlous beyond imagination and so emotionally exceptional and loaded and ever changing, and each note is so technically perfect to my ear, that I find myself straining to comprehend the perfection, bouncing within it against it's strong solid walls. And in my own natural registering of this wonderful, gratifying, surprising, soul filling, beautiful piece of music, I am quite exhausted by the end of it. I almost feel unworthy to enjoy to the full potential.
That chord at 5:04 just gets me everytime....so beautiful I'm speechless. I cannot believe that anyone would dislike this. This is the epitome of beauty and technical perfection while perhaps the best Evgeny Kissin and Rachmaninov.
The emotion in this piece is incredible. I could write pages about how it makes me feel. I do get a sense of transcendence and overcoming life's difficulties. It makes me think of the grand scheme of life and the Great Architect.
Be careful not to fall into the fallacy that great music proves the existence of God because the music could 'only have been divinely guided'. I hear this ridiculous argument frequently...but back to the music. The emotional tenderness and complexity is outstanding and unmatached in music (unfortunately Rachmaninov was under-appreciated in the US) and you don't need God to explain that.
Splendid, this movement is a dazzling crescendo of crystal pin-point notes in a flurry and a shimmer. They fall so perfectly onto me in all array of colours, like snow drops falling off the petals of a flower or rain in the heavens. And the main theme sounds so exquisitely violet to me, with hints of amethyst.
By far the most beautiful of the movements. If you haven't already, try listening to it with your eyes closed, and be in a comfortable, relaxed position. Truly heavenly it is.
@greekshorty5 Actually, Celine Dion covered a song originally made a hit by Eric Carmen in the 1970s, and yes, he used the melody from this concerto for the song. It isn't a new phenomenon. Barry Manilow used the music from a Chopin piano prelude as the basis for "Could It Be the Magic," although I think he was a little more original in his use of it...
@11geosno And remember that they turned the main theme from the last movement of Rachmaninoff's Second Piano Concerto into "Full Moon and Empty Arms." The opening theme of Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto was turned into "Tonight We Love," and the music from Kismet was adapted from music by Borodin...
Have you heard ANYTHING as intensely melodic as this anywhere? At 5:04 begins the portion of this movement where words fail to adequately describe all the emotions that are evoked. Don't analyze it. Just listen to it.
I'll never thank enough God to have made Rachmaninov. No, I won't thank God, only Sergej deserves my thanks. That is the beauty, no other word can explain it.
My favorite piece ever! I sent my children to play piano lessons whne they were kids hoping that oneof them will play this piece to me.unfortunately none of them continued playing the piano. The good thing is my oldest son became a figure skater. That gave me the chance to make this masterpiece his music in his skating programs.I'm in love with this music. Bravo to Yvgeny Kissin!! He's one of the greatest artists I've enjoyed watching!
i definitely love the ending to this movement, I actually just heard this for the first time the other day and I had to learn it on piano, it has just been haunting me ever since...so lovely, rachmaninoff was true genius
tarakai2 and soph199 - i wholeheartedly agree. I listened to this piece probably thousands of times in my life, and i get goosebumps every single time at 5:04...that doesn't happen to me with any other piece of music
Yes Sophie - 5.04 to the end of the movement is the greatest, most moving piano ever written by any composer. Big call I know, but I wonder how many others think this? Just my humble opinion but that's what I think. I wish I had sometimes been born in another time
I completely agree! I have also listened to this piece a million times since I first heard it when I was in 3rd grade. I'm now 35 and still can't get enough. I used to cry sometimes at night when I would go to bed and listen to this through my walkman. I studied piano but quit when I started studying ballet more seriously. I have had a pretty good career as a dancer but wish I could play this piece before I die. A true masterpiece.
My only complaint is that I think he plays the ending a bit strongly. In my opinion, Richter's performance, especially at that point, is entirely breathtaking.
this second movement is one of the best second movements i have heard...the other one that compares to it in my book is the second mvt of mozart's piano concerto no 23
wow i listend that when i was 10 years old in the music school. and i cryed after htat. i listen it today again when i am24 and i cryed again. fantastic music. really the best performance i have heard, Only one Russian can play that good another Russian.
a very nice signal! few people talking about kissin performance and many people talking about rachmaninov's master work!!! that great and not for all! thanks for the vídeo!
is just great! wonderful! rachmaninoff is a great composer! my favorite part of this mov. is 5:04... is just divine! i wept every time that i heard it!
3:11 to the end makes me want to cry and dance everytime.
I went through a period when I would listen to this concerto at least once a day for over a year. Either in morning when I was waking up or before I went to sleep in evening. It is one of the most amazing pieces of music I have ever been introduced to
haha that's EXACTLY what I'm doing right now. I am completely obsessed with rach 2 at the moment! I listen to the first mvt. at least 3 times a day. lol
@noellewein - Yeah, I completely agree, his music is so incredible, wish I could describe it, but but it just lifts me up and makes me realize how wonderful life is.
This man is outstanding, in my opinion; has a nice mix of sentiment with technical ability to pull everything off quite nicely. The orchestra and conductor were just as nice. I don't think one should forget their importance. I, personally, find the part from about 5:21 to 5:55 to be one of the most, if not the most, beautiful part of the song.
I agree completely. The stretch from 5:21 to 5:55 is like one final resolute smile in the face of overwhelming adversity, a proud but measured refusal to lie down and surrender -- and its a perfect launch for the the third movement. Those 34 seconds are the soundtrack to my life.
What's wrong with you? Do you have any idea how much physical and emotional concentration it takes to play a piece like this? Also, your reference to Down's syndrome is appalling. Shame on you.
This video is impossible to find!

My only complaint is that I think he plays the ending a bit strongly. In my opinion, Richter's performance, especially at that point, is entirely breathtaking.

this second movement is one of the best second movements i have heard...the other one that compares to it in my book is the second mvt of mozart's piano concerto no 23

In my opinion Kissin doesn't sing enough in his way of playing... we can hear the hammers

although i love kissin's playing, and his technique, i agree with camileelbacha. some of the notes in this lovely movement are quite harsh.

La force des morceaux dont on ne peut pas discuter la beauté, c'est la sensibilité de ceux qui les interprètent. Parfait.

What a wonderful piece. Whenever I want to be reminded of beauty, and indulge myself a little, I turn to Rachmaninov.

Those soaring, delicate themes in the middle....wow..just...wow...

Does anyone know where I can download this track? can't find it anywhere with Rachmaninov himself, only with different pianists...

I listen to the first mvt. at least 3 times a day. lol

Rachmaninov is one of my favorites.
His music is divine, it make me fly far away anf feel wonderful things.
I like very much Kissin's interpretation, I have no words to describe his art and perfection.

the part that gets me hogtied off my feet is 4:36 thru to 5:21, especially 5:06. beautiful !
funny thing, from 4:48 thru to 5:02 i started humming Eric Carmen's "All By Myself" lol. listen.....
rob262 3 years ago
Haha thats because he took the song from Rachmaninoff! It's been proven and stuff and I think he admitted to it.
Sonolumino8939 2 years ago
There is a production by Iusdesman and Joo, (I dunno the spelling) which did the thing of combining Rach and "All by myself"

@noellewein - Yeah, I completely agree, his music is so incredible, wish I could describe it, but but it just lifts me up and makes me realize how wonderful life is.

@noellewein yes, rachmaninov is wonderful

1999to2005 3 years ago 28
agree!!
ha039 3 years ago
I agree completely. The stretch from 5:21 to 5:55 is like one final resolute smile in the face of overwhelming adversity, a proud but measured refusal to lie down and surrender -- and its a perfect launch for the the third movement. Those 34 seconds are the soundtrack to my life.

i have seen him many times and besides his musical merit, he's not bad looking at all(tall and lean, too). He just needs a good hair cut>

What's wrong with you? Do you have any idea how much physical and emotional concentration it takes to play a piece like this? Also, your reference to Down's syndrome is appalling. Shame on you.
