Australia should honestly invest in multiple models from Russia, European countries and USA. Our neighbour, Indonesia has the latest Russian Sukhoi jets. Also as described in the 'Air Power Australia' website, a 20yo SU-27 out maneuvers a F-18, and the F-22 in a dog fight practice over Fiji. We shouldnt keep all our hopes on one model!!!!!

The Australian Defence Force, is damn good, if the US didn't need us, then they wouldn't want our help on the war on terrorism. Australia and the US are close forces too, you'll find that each countries, in the Air Force atleast...have pilots from each others nations flying each others aircraft.

@anbrin Australia like a lot of small democracies (Singapore for eg) are in a political fire-fight that is now fought on alignment of principals and thanks to USA stabilising "deterrant" of mutually assured destruction allows the current sad equilibrium. I grew up and am still extremely grateful of the USA's willingness to shed blood for freedom with a father who felt the bullet of Northern agression in the 1940's (only got shot in the bum thankfully as he kept his head down!! in Tarakan :-)

Research our military capabilities in total. Considered to be at / above world class C4 capabilities utilising capabilities such as JORN, Vigilaire, WGS and AIMS. Wars are not fought by single 'platforms' now, but by C4 integration. To definitively counter your point on " I'm fairly certain Australia would lose if any of the worlds developed nation's went hostile against us", it is universally accepted that only the US could attempt an invasion. Then Im pretty sure other nations such as china, russia, india and uk, germany have similiar systems in place. These systems you speak of Jorn, vigilaire.... Its almost certain that the countries I spoke of have similar capabilities or system/ways of bypassing our countries systems. Countries with huge populations and diaspora can create such solutions to problems with ease.

@hdmccart China-Type 072II class landing ship (they have 11), Type 072 Yukan class (7), Type 072III Yuting II class (11). Russia Ropucha class (They have 9). I decided to stop researching there. Each landing ship can carry around 500 tonnes of cargo depending on the setup. Pretty sure India have them aswell just cant be bothered to look it up. China and russia will win a war against australia.

@anbrin Obviously you don't work on this airframe and have knowledge of what it can really do aside from pose for photos. As far as "of the shelf" aircraft go, this is the best. Raptors are too expensive to maintain and are essentially useless for us and what we need. Do some research on the armament, stop being a dick and appreciate that sound that you hear when you wake up each morning, not gunfire, not tanks or mortars, just people living in a free country.

@anbrin Because it is the best cost/capability aircraft we could buy at the time and is easy to integrate into out existing fleet of Classic Hornets. Buy a Typhoon or Rafale off the shelf at the moment, while they are great aircraft and equal to the Super Hornet in many respects, to operate them would be a massive additional cost. Other than the US, we are the only country in the world to operate these aircraft and there are only a handful of countries out there with aircraft that can compete.

@anbrin Would you care to make a list of aircraft that outperform the F/A-18? Especially carrier-based aircraft? And the only countries to operate the F/A-18 are America, Canada, and Australia. A plane that everyone has would be the F-16. It's operated by 26 different countries. I suppose that makes it pathetic as well, nevermind its 72-0 kill ratio; the second best ratio of any post-Vietnam era fighter in the world. The aircraft with the top record? The 105-0 ratio F-15. its not the equipment its how you utilise it, p-40's during the pacific campain during ww2 were out classed by the japanese zero but they adapted and utilised the p-40 heavier weight to attack in dives (research the 'flying tigers') defeating the japanese zero's.

@anbrin Only the US and Oz operate this model Hornet. It's called the Super Hornet for a reason. The APG-79 AESA radar and the missiles it uses are in use with very few other countries, and are the latest out of the US.

@amdaniels11 glad to see our airforce growing stronger, I've enjoyed the 2 experiences when i saw hornets in real life, one time at a naval demostration (2 flew over in attack formation) at garden island (perth) and another at the red bull air race - 2008 where one came in solo to perform in front of the swanny river.
