Australia should honestly invest in multiple models from Russia, European countries and USA. Our neighbour, Indonesia has the latest Russian Sukhoi jets. Also as described in the 'Air Power Australia' website, a 20yo SU-27 out maneuvers a F-18, and the F-22 in a dog fight practice over Fiji. We shouldnt keep all our hopes on one model!!!!!
The Australian Defence Force, is damn good, if the US didn't need us, then they wouldn't want our help on the war on terrorism. Australia and the US are close forces too, you'll find that each countries, in the Air Force atleast...have pilots from each others nations flying each others aircraft.
@anbrin ahrhhh, you are so cruel :-) they'll be a good deterrant, when China is in famine and hell fully breaks lose in 2061, we will be at USA's merciful assistance (as per back at the Batle of the Coral sea 1943)!!
@amdaniels11 Why would the usa need australia assistance? When they can get spain, britian, germany and other more capable nations help? Australia isn't even battle ready compared to other nations?
@anbrin Australia like a lot of small democracies (Singapore for eg) are in a political fire-fight that is now fought on alignment of principals and thanks to USA stabilising "deterrant" of mutually assured destruction allows the current sad equilibrium. I grew up and am still extremely grateful of the USA's willingness to shed blood for freedom with a father who felt the bullet of Northern agression in the 1940's (only got shot in the bum thankfully as he kept his head down!! in Tarakan :-)
@anbrin because the other countries cant fight for shit, we will most aggressor training, we have the best special forces in the world, 10 aussie soldiers are worth 100 spanish, but now our military is being watered down by gays, immigrants and women, its not politically correct to say what everyone knows but its very weakening to our military.
@jetevovi You are so misinformed. There are so many countries out there that would destroy us. Sure we have good special forces, but everything else is shit. You go to France, Britain and Germany and you see why were so piss weak compared to their military's. 10 Aussie soldiers = 100 Spanish soldiers? Yeah that's a laugh. I bet you've never been to Spain. Plus those countries which you say fight like shit have had alot more war experience than Australia.
@anbrin frances couldnt even take over 3rd world libya! are you kidding me? france walked off the job in ww1, surrendered in ww2, surrendered in indochina, and now surrendered their country to radical muslims! same with the uk, the only country that would give us a problem is germany, the spanish are half breed muslims and we know muslims are just target practice.
@jetevovi Your so disillusioned. As for the Muslim part, I have no idea what your talking about. This conversation has steered away from the central point I was trying to illustrate in my past statements which was as a nation we can't defend ourselves from half of the worlds more developed countries i.e UK, France, Germany, Pakistan, China, Russian,India etc. If you research our weapons quantity in comparison to other nations you'll see that Australia is seriously lagging behind.
@anbrin Well for starters in world war 2 Aussies did all the hard fighting in the coral sea and south east asia. The Americans were to frightened of losing men in the hard battles it's a shame because you don't become the best unless you fight the best. Do some REAL research on Australian and world military. Here's an example " Battle of Long Tan" 40 Aussie troops against 2000 Viet Cong!! And we still came out of it victorious! Thats why America needs us!
@anbrin you do realise that our reserve forces can beat your special forces units in training exercises, and our SAS is matched only by one other fighting force in the world which is the British SAS. We go for quality rather than quantity.
@anbrin Australia actually spend more on military than Spain. US supports Australia mainly out of the fact we're strong allies and that Australia is the only country to have supported the US in every way. The only other country on your list the US lists as a true ally is Great Britain.
@anbrin i just love the engineering to be frank, the killing aspect of the engineering is not a source of pride. just the will to stay (responsibly) as a free nation makes Aussies proud, this Aussie definitely :-)
@anbrin Only us and the USN fly this. I wouldn't call an AIM120 C5 'pathetic'. BTW, the SH' real potential is in its force multiplying effect given Link 16 and totl AESA.
@hdmccart I know nothing about jet fighters but by the observation of other nation's air forces and their nations war history, Im fairly certain australia would lose if any of the worlds developed nation's went hostile against us.
If the usa and australia only have this aircraft what does it tell you about the potential of the aircraft? I stand by the previous comment of how its pathetic, australia bravado at its best. We talk the talk but can't walk the walk.
Research our military capabilities in total. Considered to be at / above world class C4 capabilities utilising capabilities such as JORN, Vigilaire, WGS and AIMS. Wars are not fought by single 'platforms' now, but by C4 integration. To definitively counter your point on " I'm fairly certain Australia would lose if any of the worlds developed nation's went hostile against us", it is universally accepted that only the US could attempt an invasion. Honestly, check out our military properly, cheers.
@hdmccart I did some research if C4 means command, control, communications, and computers? Correct me if I am wrong. Then Im pretty sure other nations such as china, russia, india and uk, germany have similiar systems in place. These systems you speak of Jorn, vigilaire.... Its almost certain that the countries I spoke of have similar capabilities or system/ways of bypassing our countries systems. Countries with huge populations and diaspora can create such solutions to problems with ease.
@hdmccart universally accepted that only the US could attempt an invasion? I pretty certain the majority of australians can agree with me that australia would be defeated by china , russia and india.
@anbrin What the populace thinks is irrelevant. Can you name the amphibious assault ships that these countries you name would use to land? You simply 'assume', incorrectly, that our capability in C4 is common throughout the worlds nations..Look, I assume you're a nice enough guy but I think we're done.
@hdmccart China-Type 072II class landing ship (they have 11), Type 072 Yukan class (7), Type 072III Yuting II class (11). Russia Ropucha class (They have 9). I decided to stop researching there. Each landing ship can carry around 500 tonnes of cargo depending on the setup. Pretty sure India have them aswell just cant be bothered to look it up. China and russia will win a war against australia.
@anbrin Sorry for the extra reply but to put your post into perspective 500 tonnes will carry only the equiv. of 7 M1A2s. Not really an impressive landing force. Never mind the fact that they would not land. You need to research stand-off weapons as per the maritime environment.
@hdmccart Stop making excuses. You would have to be either ignorant or extremely stupid to say that Australia would win in a war with China. China is ranked 2nd as the worlds most capable military only second to the usa. These things you talk of Standoff weapon et.etc. China, India and russia most certainly have this or ways/systems that produce similar results. China's has tight restrictions on its media and unlike the US-china does not like to show off its military secrets through mass media
@anbrin 1) Because its a very good aircraft. 2) no they dont lol, only 2 or 3 countries use this as lead fighter 3) Australia is using this as a buffer till the JSF F-25 comes in in 2015
@anbrin wow i meant f-35 i was rushing. I know because i have gone out and seen them for my defense force recruiting you idiot. Im going to ADFA for 2012 and i got to go and see them. i also have been 2 Avalon airshows and spoken to pilots who have flown aircraft from all over the world, and most pilots prefer f-18 super hornet over the f-16 and f-18 hornet. DUMBASS!
@antzz1077 .....wow 2 airshows....lol You must be a professional. " I know because i have gone out and seen them for my defense force recruiting you" ? Defense force recruiting? LMAO Your probably some 12 yr old who thinks he knows about aircraft. I highly doubt someone with poor grammar like yourself made it into ADFA. I suggest you should learn basic grammar instead of being a loud mouth who thinks he knows about aircraft. DUMBASS
@anbrin Obviously you don't work on this airframe and have knowledge of what it can really do aside from pose for photos. As far as "of the shelf" aircraft go, this is the best. Raptors are too expensive to maintain and are essentially useless for us and what we need. Do some research on the armament, stop being a dick and appreciate that sound that you hear when you wake up each morning, not gunfire, not tanks or mortars, just people living in a free country.
@anbrin Because it is the best cost/capability aircraft we could buy at the time and is easy to integrate into out existing fleet of Classic Hornets. Buy a Typhoon or Rafale off the shelf at the moment, while they are great aircraft and equal to the Super Hornet in many respects, to operate them would be a massive additional cost. Other than the US, we are the only country in the world to operate these aircraft and there are only a handful of countries out there with aircraft that can compete.
@anbrin - What do you mean by "nearly everybody has this aircraft"? We are the only country to by it. The RAAF i the only armed force on the planet that has this aircradft in service.
@anbrin Would you care to make a list of aircraft that outperform the F/A-18? Especially carrier-based aircraft? And the only countries to operate the F/A-18 are America, Canada, and Australia. A plane that everyone has would be the F-16. It's operated by 26 different countries. I suppose that makes it pathetic as well, nevermind its 72-0 kill ratio; the second best ratio of any post-Vietnam era fighter in the world. The aircraft with the top record? The 105-0 ratio F-15. American engineering...
its not the equipment its how you utilise it, p-40's during the pacific campain during ww2 were out classed by the japanese zero but they adapted and utilised the p-40 heavier weight to attack in dives (research the 'flying tigers') defeating the japanese zero's.
@anbrin Only the US and Oz operate this model Hornet. It's called the Super Hornet for a reason. The APG-79 AESA radar and the missiles it uses are in use with very few other countries, and are the latest out of the US.
@anbrin The US is only other Air Force to have this aircraft. Unfortunately the other countries you refer to have the A,B,C,D models which are well over 20 years old.
@amdaniels11 glad to see our airforce growing stronger, I've enjoyed the 2 experiences when i saw hornets in real life, one time at a naval demostration (2 flew over in attack formation) at garden island (perth) and another at the red bull air race - 2008 where one came in solo to perform in front of the swanny river.
