It is a shame that robbie thought he was bigger than the music ,he was just a greedy bastard period. levon, rick danko, garth, richard manuel they were signed on for the music and they made the music, you can feel it coming off of them. Seeing levon these days with his band is so fucking cool, with his daughter ,larry campbell and his wife , those cat"s have a great thing going. Go check it out because levon is not getting younger,he is more soulful than he ever was.
Rockin Canadian (and one Southern boy) hillbillies. What a great American band. I have turned my college son and his buddies on to the Band, loaned them my copy of "Last Waltz" and Ole Miss has a whole new bunch of The Band fans.Every one of their songs are as great today as they were yesterday.
Really miss Danko, he was a rare artist, loved watching him play, he always looked like he was having a damn good time.
@CGiordano464 Well, I usually play it on my bouzouki, which is kindof the same thing (depends on whether you tune your mandolin in GDAE or GDAD, as bouzoukis are usually tuned in GDAD). Also, depending on whether you play it in F major (as on the Last Waltz and such) or in E major, as Levon tends to do lately. I usually just play it in D or E (using a capo). It's a fairly easy tune.
@Elphir finally a response haha. thanks for info ive never heard of tuning it to GDAD? Although i have been playing for only about 5 months now. thanks for info and do you know chords for song?
This film is called THE BAND IS BACK...I have an old copy on VHS...I was lucky to meet Rick once or twice.I met him in Buffalo one night.I walked in his dressing room and sat at the table with him...I sat there for 10-15 min..I asked a reporter for a pen, used a old cigarette pack for paper and asked for his autograph....
@floortom123 , i partyed with Rick & Levon backstage in Philadelphia 1983. Got their autographs on The Last Waltz album and later had it signed by Robbie in NYC 2002.
This is The Band with members of The Cate Brother's band (an Arkansas group), they toured together, there were also some clips from a performance they did in Japan on Youtube...
When was this? Levon looks kinda ragged, this was before his cancer wasn't it. Either way, I love the video. Wish I was old enough in the 70's to enjoy this. Im 36 and all of my friends my age agree, the music from the sevenites was the best, in every genre. I'll be seeing the Levon Helm Band at Austin City Limit Music Fest 2009. Can't wait.
1984, Known as The Reunion Concert, From St Elizabeth Theatre in Vancouver, British Columbia.Released on VHS as THE BAND IS BACK. I have it. Great piece of history.
Yes he does and I would rather see him on drums, Richard on keyboards and the rest, the same. They were all Amazing musicians. All could play different instruments and do it very well. I guess thats what made them "The Band"Kudos to Canada for the greats here and Kudos to Levon, the only Southern boy there was. But Richard could sing ya back to alabama or goergia.. Truly amazing! My very favorite BAND
Hey his awkwardnes works huh. lol prefer Levon on the drms and Richard on keyboards but I guess thats what makes them "The Band" very skilled musicians....Always in my heart.
in fact robbie's contribution was almost exclusively his guitar work and songwriting. check out their performance at the 1989 junos minus levon helm - there's a reason why he kept his mic turned off at most concerts
Without a doubt, The Band here is the living proof thst Great Lovely Giants inhabited the Earth some time ago! I miss Rick and Richard Manuel sine their voices were unique, as well as I do truly miss Levon's feeling singing when nobody can comper to the greatest sun of Arkansas el señor Leva in the whole universe! (B-p)
There were two videotapes released from 1983 performances...this is the one from Canada (the other was from Japan). This is the opening song from the Canadian concert.
Congratulations to The Band for their Lifetime Achievement Grammy, and Levon for his Grammy nomination for Best Traditional Folk Recording of the year for "Dirt Farmer"!

Nothing against Levon Helm's mandolin playing, but it is not the same when he is not on drums.

@jkshackelford It could be in Japan (I don't think so, though), or in the 1984 Montreal concert.

Actually, they always did that song that way, it's Richard on drums on the record (The Band - (1969) and Levon on mandolin!
I think Richard's drumming are great too!
