I don't understand why Dan Quayle got so much flack for his Guard service. At least he served the entire 6 years (unlike GWB who only served 4) and unlike Bush he didn't desert his unit for a whole year. Plus, during Vietnam some Guardsmen were subject to deployment. Quayle didn't try to avoid this like Bush did, by getting assigned to fly an obsolete plane.

Also, Quayle attended basic training (unlike Bush) and never used his political connections to get promoted (unlike Bush).
