I was surprised to find this. I played drums on Bruce and Still got the Magic which I just found out by reading the comments was realesed on an album titled The Sound City Years. How can anyone confuse him with Bruce Springstein, I have a picture of Rick and me on my shelf and I had a person come in my home one day not to long ago, and literally asked me is that Bruce Springstien, man I nearly wanted to slap her silly, obviously she is not a true fan of Rick.... While holding back the fact I wanted to slap her, I politely said No, it is Rick Springfield, he is so much better than Bruce.

Thanks so much for sharing this great video! I had never heard the song "BRUCE" before but had heard it mentioned many times. According to my Billboard Top 40 book it reached #27 in 1984/85 so I am wondering why it is NEVER included on any Rick Springfield HITS compilation??? Really, I think it's one of his best songs!

Rick wasn't too happy it was released in the first place. He recorded an album for Mercury Records in 1978. The sessions were never completed and he was dropped from the label. In early 1984 when he was at the height of his fame, Mercury decided to cash in, finished the album without Rick's consent and released it. Rick tried to have the record's release blocked but failed in his attempt. "Bruce" and the album "Beautiful Feelings" was issued three months before the "Hard To Hold" soundtrack.

Candi, you sure nailed the facts on this tune. When I interviewed Rick awhile back, he told me the tale of the "Lost Album." He said one of the record co. guys actually STOLE the songs from him, and he was furious when the album appeared. Btw, he was a really nice guy, had my girlfriend and I backstage after the show, was all decked out in a suit, wearing glasses. He gladly signed a huge stack of vinyl I'd brought- he laughed when I tossed Beautiful Feelings on the table, but signed it anyway!

"Bruce" was originally recorded in 1978, along with a collection of songs that sat on a shelf, unheard by American audiences, for about 6 years (although, the original version of "Bruce" - the one I use here - did appear on the Australian version of Working Class Dog in 1981).

In 1984, Rick's previous management sought to capitalize on Rick's success in the U.S. at that time, so they sold this collection of songs to Mercury/Polygram records, which released them as "Beautiful Feelings."

Actually, Rick wrote the song because A LOT of people have called him "Mr. Springsteen" - including, interestingly enough, one of Rick's acting teachers back in the 70's. I'd be willing to bet that, rather than being "humorous fiction", "Bruce" is more accurately described as being a case of changing the names to protect the... clueless? :^)

The only thing I've heard abour Bruce's reaction to the whole Springsteen/Springfield thing was, I read an interview where the reporter commented that the quickest way to end an interview with Bruce was to mention Jessie's Girl. Well, until recently, Bruce rarely did any interviews. He still doesn't do the media rounds, ala Bon Jovi, god, they're everywhere.

As a joke, some fans would hold baners requesting "Jessie's Girl" from the front seats. Bruce would just laugh it off, and play into the whole joke.
