I remember this song--poor Rick! At least he has a sense of humor. By the way--Rick was born exactly one month to the day before Bruce (Rick 8-23-49, Bruce 9-23-49)
My name is Bruce.I never heard this song except when i went to the roller rink. This one girl would ask me to skate with her after she requested this song to be played.I think its cool.Im a fan of both Bruce and Rick.
This song beats Jessie's Girl by a country mile! I swear it, I cannot stop listening to this since the first time I heard it! RICK IS AWESOME AS A POSSUM!
I was surprised to find this. I played drums on Bruce and Still got the Magic which I just found out by reading the comments was realesed on an album titled The Sound City Years. I just purchased the album on itunes. Thanks so much for posting this video. I didn't have a finished copy of this. Just the basic tracks.
How can anyone confuse him with Bruce Springstein, I have a picture of Rick and me on my shelf and I had a person come in my home one day not to long ago, and literally asked me is that Bruce Springstien, man I nearly wanted to slap her silly, obviously she is not a true fan of Rick.... While holding back the fact I wanted to slap her, I politely said No, it is Rick Springfield, he is so much better than Bruce.
@311gregory That's correct in the first chorus. However, the line in the SECOND chorus (the one carrieluvv was referring to) IS "My name is Richard, gonna hitch it to ya, babe." (And in the THIRD chorus, the line is "My name is Ricky, gonna stick to ya, babe.")
Thanks to my friend " Mary aka Fresc****" I got to meet Rick twice and he is just as yummy in person and nice ! Mary , if you read this.. I think of you often you are such a great person and thanks for all the Music you Introduced me to In those wild rides to "Ricks shows"your friend from BORDERS now living in Oklahoma ! Email me sometime....... God bless you and your kids!
I haven't heard this song in years, it's still funny! No way on earth would I confuse the two. Love Springfield, like Springsteen--I even have a copy of the Nick Knight dvd.
Thanks so much for sharing this great video! I had never heard the song "BRUCE" before but had heard it mentioned many times. According to my Billboard Top 40 book it reached #27 in 1984/85 so I am wondering why it is NEVER included on any Rick Springfield HITS compilation??? Really, I think it's one of his best songs!
Rick wasn't too happy it was released in the first place. He recorded an album for Mercury Records in 1978. The sessions were never completed and he was dropped from the label. In early 1984 when he was at the height of his fame, Mercury decided to cash in, finished the album without Rick's consent and released it. Rick tried to have the record's release blocked but failed in his attempt. "Bruce" and the album "Beautiful Feelings" was issued three months before the "Hard To Hold" soundtrack.
Candi, you sure nailed the facts on this tune. When I interviewed Rick awhile back, he told me the tale of the "Lost Album." He said one of the record co. guys actually STOLE the songs from him, and he was furious when the album appeared. Btw, he was a really nice guy, had my girlfriend and I backstage after the show, was all decked out in a suit, wearing glasses. He gladly signed a huge stack of vinyl I'd brought- he laughed when I tossed Beautiful Feelings on the table, but signed it anyway!
I haven't heard this song in forever. Have always been a big Rick Springfield fan. Had all his albums....still do btw....just don't have a record player anymore....lol. I've got the Beautiful Feelings 33 somewhere. Great song. Thanks for posting.
FYI the remastered Beautiful Feelings songs, as originally recorded in '78, are available in CD form, and on iTunes, in a collection called, "Rick Springfield: The Early Sound City Sessions".
"Bruce" was originally recorded in 1978, along with a collection of songs that sat on a shelf, unheard by American audiences, for about 6 years (although, the original version of "Bruce" - the one I use here - did appear on the Australian version of Working Class Dog in 1981).
In 1984, Rick's previous management sought to capitalize on Rick's success in the U.S. at that time, so they sold this collection of songs to Mercury/Polygram records, which released them as "Beautiful Feelings."
Thanks for the post. I love this song. In case ya want the original, it's on "Beautiful Feelings" album. It's a little different than this version, but still kick ass. Just a li'l more "produced".
Actually, this IS the original version, as recorded in 1978, and as it appeared on the Australian version of Working Class Dog. The 1984 Beautiful Feelings version replaced the instrumentals here with tracks from studio musicians employed by Mercury/Polygram Records.
Yeah, that's new news to me. I had heard the re-recorded version on Kasey Kasem's American Top 40 program back in '84 and thought it was a riot (and a good tune), not realizing that there was an original floating around. This version is good, but I'm too used to the other one! thx for posting...and educating! (me, at any rate)
Awesome! The hilarious thing about this song is that it was before Jessies Girl, so Rick was allready predicting himself to become the Super star he did.
Great video for a great song penned by a great singer. It's cute, funny and darling. I could never mix them up either, but because of the name, people do. Saturday Night Live had the opposite in a sketch once and that was a hoot too. Rick S is still so sexy, handsome and I've always found him so very talented!
People confused the Springsteen and Springfield names? Didn't he also make a apparence on General Hospital with some of his old soap opera co-stars some time ago too?
Rick Springfield is way "BETTER LOOKING" than Bruce Springsteen. I LOVE this song. I've been a fan of Rick's since I was 16(1984). He is soooo FINE!!!! His wife is LUCKY!!!!

Way to go candi4rls, those pics fit the song really well for the different parts... and some of them i hadn't seen before! The version of this song that i have has harder rocking guitars...
I loved it! Great job with the vid too! Sure brings back memories as I'm a 39 yr old Rick Fan of 25 yrs & counting. Had all the old albums at one time, wish I still did. To this day, he is still awesome and he's a super nice guy, met him a few years ago in Orlando & again this past May @ Busch Gardens. My sister still laughs at me for being so giddy about it like when I was 14. Can't help but love the guy!
OMG how could you possibly compare the two? I would have been insulted if I was Rick. Good comeback SONG! Bruce must love it when called Rick! HA HA HA
Actually, Rick wrote the song because A LOT of people have called him "Mr. Springsteen" - including, interestingly enough, one of Rick's acting teachers back in the 70's. I'd be willing to bet that, rather than being "humorous fiction", "Bruce" is more accurately described as being a case of changing the names to protect the... clueless? :^)
Wow...this is not the same song that's on the "Beautiful Feelings" album. But, there was a problem with that one anyway. It wasn't his music, and they released it anyway. So...wow...now I want this version! Gotta wait for the cd. Thanks for posting this!
I never understand why people are mistaken Rick Springfield for Bruce Springsteen. They are quite different persons! And of course, Ricky is better musician!
I've never heard this song before but now its my favorite! I have to admit as a child i got the last names mized up a bit too! But I was 4 yrs old so cut me some slack! Anyway great video! And I love this song! He should do more like this! I mean I love all his songs but this one was really out there!!! I hope Bruce wasn't too mad.
