Learning Hmong

I made this tutorial to help my wife learn Hmong nearly 5 years ago while I was stationed in Iraq. I'm Mong Leng, but I threw a White Hmong word she found difficult to pronounce (Sib ntsib dua) in there. Now for all you detractors, it was intentional. She's Caucasian and White Hmong words are just easier for her to pronounce. Mong Leng is harder to pronounce indeed otherwise White Hmong folks should be able to master it already.

This is neat, Thanks! I have Hmong neighbors, and while the kids speak English like natives the grownups don't have much English at all, which makes it hard to chat over the fence about how the garden is doing, I heard you had the flu, etc! I'd like to surprise them with a word or two. Do you think you can put up some phonetic pronunciations to back up the spoken words? You are very clear but my old ears need all the help I can get!

Her mothers condition on if I'm gonna marry her someday is to learn some Hmong, which I want to do anyway... but having trouble finding any sources for this online. Her family speaks white Hmong. Hmm i dont understand your comment. Xaiv does mean blue but Hmoob Leeg and Hmoob Dawb are the languages. The common misconseption is that Hmoob Leeg can be called Hmoob ntsuab. Hmoob ntsuab is a type of hmong people, and can mean either blue or green hmong. So Blue Hmong = Green Hmong. Or Blue or Green Hmong = Hmoob Ntsuab.

Xav = blue. In the early days there were few Hmong proficient in English, so they mistook the word "xav = blue" for "ntsuab = green". Hmoob Ntsuab is the white hmong word for "Moob Leeg". We Moob Leeg prefer to be called "Moob Leeg". I'm the guy in the video by the way.

Doesn't xav mean want? I have heard that Hmong ntsuab is considered a little bit offensive. I'm not hmong but everyone ive asked and everything ive read says that blue hmong = green hmong. I would simply believe you but i've noticed from asking hmong people about their culture is that they each say something a little bit different. So its rather frustrating to get an agreement on anything.

sorry xav was a typo...Xaav (Hmoob Ntsuab)That's why I speak with the older Hmongs whose information is a little bit more accurate. Hmoob Leeg is is what consists of all the dark colors: green/ntsuab, blue/Xaiv, black/dub. Leeg also means veins and the misconsception was that they were cannibals and that is why some Hmoob dawb were not to associate or marry Hmong Leeg. But like you said, it does vary depending on who you ask and what their understanding of it is...so extra research is required.

Actually, this is Moob Leeg (aka Hmoob Ntsuab/Green Hmong). How do I know? Because I made it. However, it was a very feeble attempt to teach my SO Hmong when I was in Iraq.

I'm 39 years old, so I'd say that I'm from a generation that still has a pretty good grasp of the Hmong language in the west. If you feel you can put out a better product, by all means.

I recorded this video when I was in Iraq. I used "Sib ntsib dua" because the person I was recording for had a hard time pronouncing "dlua". She's Caucasian trying to learn Hmong. I don't mean to confuse people. I happen to be very fluent in both Moob Leeg and Moob Dlawb. For all you "critics" out there, I used to teach Hmong interpreting/translation at the University of Minnesota, so I know a thing or two about the Hmong language and it's two main dialects of S.E. Asia.

purplenachos001, just for comparison, white hmong is a mordern hmong dialect as United States English. Green Mong is as United Kingdom English. However, there are many terms between the two dialects that have different phonetic and meaning.
