I made this tutorial to help my wife learn Hmong nearly 5 years ago while I was stationed in Iraq. I'm Mong Leng, but I threw a White Hmong word she found difficult to pronounce (Sib ntsib dua) in there. Now for all you detractors, it was intentional. She's Caucasian and White Hmong words are just easier for her to pronounce. Mong Leng is harder to pronounce indeed otherwise White Hmong folks should be able to master it already.
This is just an advice...The correct hmong word for "welcome" at 0:06 should be "txais tos" and "please come in" is "thov caws los" or "thov nkag los". Keep up!!
This is neat, Thanks! I have Hmong neighbors, and while the kids speak English like natives the grownups don't have much English at all, which makes it hard to chat over the fence about how the garden is doing, I heard you had the flu, etc! I'd like to surprise them with a word or two. Do you think you can put up some phonetic pronunciations to back up the spoken words? You are very clear but my old ears need all the help I can get!
@1secret Hmmm...I made this video for my better half when I was in Iraq. Had no idea she was going to post it on YouTube, but I am Moob Leeg aka Green Hmong, so I did it in my native dialect. Only natural.
my gf is Hmong and she's pregnant... I want to learn some more Hmong so I'll be able to talk to her parents more. These are very concise and helpful; could you do some more or direct me to a site where I can get a Hmong-English computer program or something?
@supertomii19: what's your ethnicity? do you know any other languages? or was english your first language? And sadly there is no hmong-english lanuage learning program out there available.
@supertomii19 I don't really have time to do more given my military schedule, but given the popularity of this simple video I am considering making more. My kids are half-white also, so I think it'll come in handy for them too.
@christiansoldier1869 That would be awesome... otherwise the elders just tell me my wife should be my teacher, but I'd like to get as much learning done as possible.
@hmglorboi1 I'm speaking all Moob Leeg (Green Hmong) except for "sib ntsib dua" for the convenience of my better half, because it's difficult for her to say "sib ntsib dlua" - that was intentional
I'm stationed in Japan for the USAF... and have a Hmong speaking girl back home. Her mothers condition on if I'm gonna marry her someday is to learn some Hmong, which I want to do anyway... but having trouble finding any sources for this online. Her family speaks white Hmong. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
Dude. you have NO idea. I'm in the USN, station in Washington as part of the SSBN (submarine group) and...well I WOULD LIKE TO marry a hmong girl one day....BUT........THE ONLY HMONG I SEE EVERYDAY IS THE IMAGE I LOOK INTO THE MIRROR!! *_* HOW SAD IS THAT!!
I am a nurse in a rehabilitation facility and one of my patients is a lovely 100 year old woman who speaks only Hmong. I am trying to learn Hmong so that she will not feel so alone. Any help is great! This video is very helpful!
I will try to post a more "lessons" soon. My SO posted this video I made for her while I was stationed in Iraq. I'm in healthcare too, so I'll make a healthcare specific video for you.
there are three dialects in the hmong languagae, white, green, and hmong chinese, this is teaching the basics of the white dialect, the white dialect is the most common one tho
Hmm i dont understand your comment. Xaiv does mean blue but Hmoob Leeg and Hmoob Dawb are the languages. The common misconseption is that Hmoob Leeg can be called Hmoob ntsuab. Hmoob ntsuab is a type of hmong people, and can mean either blue or green hmong. So Blue Hmong = Green Hmong. Or Blue or Green Hmong = Hmoob Ntsuab.
Xav = blue. In the early days there were few Hmong proficient in English, so they mistook the word "xav = blue" for "ntsuab = green". Hmoob Ntsuab is the white hmong word for "Moob Leeg". We Moob Leeg prefer to be called "Moob Leeg". I'm the guy in the video by the way.
Doesn't xav mean want? I have heard that Hmong ntsuab is considered a little bit offensive. I'm not hmong but everyone ive asked and everything ive read says that blue hmong = green hmong. I would simply believe you but i've noticed from asking hmong people about their culture is that they each say something a little bit different. So its rather frustrating to get an agreement on anything.
sorry xav was a typo...Xaav (Hmoob Ntsuab)That's why I speak with the older Hmongs whose information is a little bit more accurate. Hmoob Leeg is is what consists of all the dark colors: green/ntsuab, blue/Xaiv, black/dub. Leeg also means veins and the misconsception was that they were cannibals and that is why some Hmoob dawb were not to associate or marry Hmong Leeg. But like you said, it does vary depending on who you ask and what their understanding of it is...so extra research is required.
Actually, this is Moob Leeg (aka Hmoob Ntsuab/Green Hmong). How do I know? Because I made it. However, it was a very feeble attempt to teach my SO Hmong when I was in Iraq.
Thanks dude for taking the time to teach ....interesting....I will try some ...thanks again...I am sure I will be laughed at for trying....but at least I am trying..LOL..
Well, I'm not going to get into a pissing contest here with you greenman. If you don't like it, please keep your comments to yourself. I'm 39 years old, so I'd say that I'm from a generation that still has a pretty good grasp of the Hmong language in the west. If you feel you can put out a better product, by all means.
@kojpuasncokuv Moob Leeg is considered by scholars and Hmong elders to be "original" Hmong and the white Hmong dialect is widely considered a derivitive of Moob Leeg.
thanks for posting this video..i enjoy learning hmong myself..since i'm not hmong.. but i've alot of hmong friends and i'm trying to learn the differences of white and green hmong..plus learning the basics..i used to speak hmong back when i was young in Thailand, but now due to not living among hmong community,i've lost all my understandings, thanks again..u did a great job..post up some some videos of teaching hmong languages.i want to learn how to read and write too. if u can post it up
I recorded this video when I was in Iraq. I used "Sib ntsib dua" because the person I was recording for had a hard time pronouncing "dlua". She's Caucasian trying to learn Hmong. I don't mean to confuse people. I happen to be very fluent in both Moob Leeg and Moob Dlawb. For all you "critics" out there, I used to teach Hmong interpreting/translation at the University of Minnesota, so I know a thing or two about the Hmong language and it's two main dialects of S.E. Asia.
what is the difference beetewn white and green hmong?Im trying to learn hmong so i dont get left out since almost all my friends are hmong .Nice vid.Very educational
purplenachos001, just for comparison, white hmong is a mordern hmong dialect as United States English. Green Mong is as United Kingdom English. However, there are many terms between the two dialects that have different phonetic and meaning.
I don't think you know what you're talking about since you don't even know me. However, judging from your posting I'd venture to say you're unqualified to offer any kind of critcism.
