Oddly, I just read last evening that Mahler was between trains (heading home) when he stopped in to try the piano roll recording device, but that he was hurried. I have no doubt that is why the "rushed sound" of the tempi on these recordings. His mind was likely racing and he had no score with him, so this is from memory. I agree that it sounds a little fast, but just to hear the man play piano is enough for me! The man was magnificent, no matter how "hurried" he may have been.
Are we totally sure that the tempo is being played back right?? This is so fast, that the soprano would have a hard time singing these passages well. This sounds more like a "pianistic" version of Mahler's music...almost giving it Chopin like characteristics, IMHO.
My guess is as good as yours, although most piano arrangements are usually interpreted faster than usual as per the tonal and textural limitations of the piano.
I know and own 3 versions of "Mahler plays Mahler "on Welte Mignon . They all are wonderful pieces and sound absolutely incredible .The last one was edited (2010 )by the International Gustav Mahler Gesellschaft and has the particularity of being played on Mahler's piano , a Blüthner . it sounds quite different from the others . Mahler recorded 4 tunes : the 1st mvt of the 5th ( Trauermarsch ) -the 4th mvt of the 4th-Ich ging mit Lust durch einen grünen Wald (Lied)- Ging heut'Morgen übers Feld.
i don´t understand, is that played by Mahler himself?

A real treasure to hear it coming from the man himself.

Yes I think I would agree, but within the musical limitations of piano roll technology!

Probably the best out of the few piano rolls he did.
