@Operafiend22 I'm not anti Callas. I love her & yes absolutely she softened her voice for instance 1:30-2:00 "si una purica virgine". I know she was very talented but so many hail her as being the absolute authority on singing opera but there were so many equally terrific sopranos in her time & after. I love Callas in fierce roles like Tosca, Carmen, Medea, Lady Macbeth, Abigaille. I don't like her Violetta, Gilda or Lucia, young romantic heroines I feel sound better sung by lighter sopranos
Magnificent Callas. I love her voice but for Violetta, despite her success in this role, I much prefer a lighter lyric soprano. Not necessarily a small voice, but a lighter weight like Moffo, Sills, Lorengar, Contrubas. A heavy sound for Violetta is off-character. She is dying of consumption, the music for some of her singing is breathy and panting, and she seems to be fading away through the opera. Her sudden outbursts of dramatic expression in fortissimo need not be overwhelming.
¡Ritorno a vivere!!! Oh!! Gioia!! Imposible no creer lo que dice la CALLAS....Grandiosa Diva, VIVE POR SIEMPRE !! MARIA CALLAS, God Bless you Maria . Las demas sopranos estan muy lejos de conmover haciendo añicos el alma con tan solo una frase ,una palabra. Ese es el milagro de Callas!! Perfecta, admirable ,incomparable,...DIVINA!!
@tneprescintr I downloaded the complete opera along with many other great recordings from an Italian website many years ago...unfortunately that site no longer exists.
Also, I accidentally hit the thumbs down button instead of Reply...sorry about that!
@fontenayperi I know!!! We do have the act 2 video from Tosca from a concert she gave (where part of the concert was all of Tosca act 2) but what a shame we don't have more
i do have this whole opera. Alfredo is definitely Francesco Albanese.
I believe that this is the best traviata that will ever exist. anyone who listens to Callas and Albanese in this opera, in its entirety, and does not bawl...well...i'd say you don't know what you're listening to and leave it at that.
operafiend22: thanks for uploading this mate! clearly your standards are in the clouds as well. :]]

it is such a pity that there's no video footage of Callas's opera performances!

@pointemeout I agree completely...the best Traviata that I have ever heard and will ever hear

Alfredo isn' t Gianni Poggi but probably Francesco Albanese. Maria Callas is at his best.
