I laughed so loud someone outside my window told me to be quiet, I jumped out of that window and beat him with my mic and then droppen an sa1232z on his head to finish him off.
One (most important probably) thing you haven't tested them on, is getting them wet! Someone poured some water (or worse, beer) on our mixer on our last gig, and now it's on repair. I wonder if Mackie would have prevailed in such a situation!
Hey, I featured your product in a video. I have studio projects SP-828 preamps leading to my recorder. These also work as a mini mixer as well as an 8 channel preamp. I run the mix out into a Mackie HMX-56. Search "Deep Blue dJinn in the Studio, Jan 2011" . Also read the expanded text beneath the video for details.
Mackie: You guys really do make incredible, durable mixers. Unfortunately, I had to spend hundreds of dollars on Brand "B" before I decided to finally listen to musican friends who had always recommended Mackie. Better still, is the lack of noise. Thanks for making awesome, affordable equipment for home studio musicians. I'm a buyer for life. You guys set the bar for the rest of the mfg. world.
If you really work at Mackie , PLEASE !!! , let the engineers know to put a light on every mute button channel and pfl button , because when is dark I can't see which channel is on ,and I have to grab the flashlight and bend to search for the little tiny mini white mark, that is the only reason I'm staying with Yamaha. About the video, I rather a company to spend money on sound quality than tank quality, at the end , who treats their equipment like that?
@ermollejuo for every LED we add, an angel loses it's wings.... Seriously, though, thanks for your input. There are always trade-offs when designing a mixer, but your opinion is well received. I do argue that a tough mixer and a great sounding mixer are not mutually exclusive. This fun video is meant to show how tough our VLZ3 mixers are...we know that you are unlikely to drop on off a roof. However, our VLZ3 mixers will go toe-to-toe with any of the competitive boards shown. Check the specs.
When you say that you "argue that a tough mixer and great sounding mixer are not mutually exclusive", it almost sounds like your saying that while yours is tough, it's not a great sounding mixer.
@Twinhit Sorry for any confusion. The phrase "not mutually exclusive" means that it can be both. It is not EXCLUSIVELY tough or good sounding. The commenter was pointing out that, yes, it is tough, but he would prefer tests that proved the audio quality. I pointed out that one can make a mixer that sounds great and is tough.
@ermollejuo I thought exactly the same judging the new 2404/3204 VLZ3s at first sight, but after reading the manual I found out that the OL-&SIG-LEDs beside the faders are actually the Mute-&Solo-Indicators! So at least for the big VLZ3s, this feature is luckily present.
We use a 1604-VLZ (much improved dynamics over the original 1604) the only issues we have with the board is that there are really only 4 sends (having to choose "3&4" or "5&6" is still akin to 4 sends), since at least one of these is for effects we're only left with 3 monitor sends.
The other issue is I wish they had the "pre-post" fader option on all the sends so you can customize the board to your particular liking.
Aside from those issues the VLZ series are incredibly clean & well built
Amusing, but isn't this kind of like having a "best disposable lighter" contest? You have a bunch of "tests" where you're basically smooshing the daylights out of the little mixers, but how about which one is quietest? best headroom? cleanest eq's? None of these are remotely pro, all best served to amplify a vocal mic or two at a rinky-dink gig or rehearsal... Very self-serving... I suppose it's just meant for entertainment...
Depending on what you mean by pro. If you've got a 5 piece rock band then no not pro. If you're a small 3 piece band or a DJ these are pro. (cause honestly you don't need much more than that) why buy more than ya need?
I've used 3 different mackie boards including this one and I gotta tell ya, spend the extra cash and get a mackie. They are clean and quiet. No hiss, no hum and no coloration. Teamed with a tube pre-amp and MY GOD this little thing can sparkle.
Even from their website, you know that the guys at Mackie love what they're doing. They're a crazy bunch of folks! And I'm crazier for thinking about buying that mixer! LOL
We tried to enrage the British guy (Woody) to the point of screaming, but it made the other guy (Greg) really uncomfortable. However, we will make great efforts to increase the craziness for the next episode.
The A/V company that I work for use Mackie mixers for the majority of our sets and I must say that they are durable mixers. Because I work in a hotel environment, these mixers get used all over our property. We mainly use the Mackie 1402 but we also own a 1604 and a 2404 and in the 2 years I've been there, we've only had to send the 1604 in for repair because the mono output went bad. Our 1402's get used the most and take alot of abuse and they still keep chugging along.
We only used one of each mixer in this video. You'll have to trust us there. This video was meant to show that Mackie mixers are rugged, and I think it does that. We certainly wouldn't post the results on the spec page or anything!
I bought a Mackie 802, and it came in a casing with the "fragile glass" symbol on it and packed with all sorts of foam, a bit funny as the case also has "built-like-a-tank" labelled over it. The unit is working perfectly and do seem very durable, but now i wonder what kinds of packaging labels tanks comes with :)
ok, i agree mackie is superior, but what a load of rubbish. you have to get an outside source to do the tests, mackie probably replaced their desk after each test! the behringer did really well surprisingly.
Behringer has often been seen as german designed, chinese made mackie-near-clones. I think there was even a dispute over some intelectual property allegations. However, for the consumer, Behringer is not too shabby. Maybe that's why mackie started tapco, they can clone their own stuff, cheapen the manufacturing a bit, and sell it for same price as behringer.. Would have been great to see tapco in the test.
I agree, I've used a small tapco desk before, even though its much cheaper than the Mackie's, the sound was fantastic, as was the build quality. I'm due for a replacement soon, and the price/quality combination of the Tapco mixers is very attractive.
I have just bought one of these!! :D

Just a question.. how come your "pre" aux sends are pre-mute, and aux 2 usually doesn't have a level pot? Otherwise, your mixers are nice.

Of course this are really extreme tests, but you can indeed judge simply by looking at the products how tough they are.
So I am not surprised that they broke in the same exact order I was thinking of...
Thumbs up for quality hardware!

Honestly the Mackie/Tapco board is great!
Brand A is pretty good for the money though
Brand B is decent for the budget conscious
Never have used brand Y so can't say for sure.
