I find videos that go from a rough bar are always a good way to impress the noobs who think I'm strange for liking this kind of thing. They need to see it go from 'rusty' to perfect in a heavy, quick pass
@jh4dc5s Clearance of the spindle head. If the workpiece were between centers and the cutting tool were shorter, you can see how right side of the spindle would collide.
@ryobiguy Spindles don't have absolute encoders. They have incremental encoders and small segments of absolute positioning data in certain areas (e.g. 180 degrees). The first time around, it spins past 180 but takes note of the rough positioning. The second time around, it spindles a full 360 while counting the tick marks. It slows down just before it reaches the final position. It then reads the absolute tick marks and stops/locks at the exact position.
all thoughs sparks tell me he is spinning the lathe too fast. slow it down or get a harder tip. or coolant.

@JTMarlin8 Yea, I thought so. I'm wanting to open my own shop and looking for some used Mazak machines.
I've programed Mazatrol Quick turn Lathes. Looking for a used QT 15 in good condition.

I've never seen a tool that flips around before. What is that called? That would save soo much time!

I wonder why it seems to make a few full rotations instead of just doing a 180.

I guess that is what they call a wiper.
douro20 1 year ago
@douro20 Wiper refers to the nose shape of the insert. It has more of a flat to it to make a much better finish, even at high feed rates.
