It is so frightening to let go of our conditioning and allow our children the freedom they deserve. I just want to thank you for these videos. You are doing a great service to so many parents and children.
mom : it is not true that tv was forbidden--it was discouraged. Obviously I knew you were watching and you guys watched the Simpsons every Sunday with your dad who was and still is a tv-holic. I think you took my antipathy to TV into your psyche and perceived that as "forbidding it" but it ain't so. I watched movies with you guys some too. Now I myself totally stopped watching TV for the most part as you were growing up.
Also I knew Tyler gave the Nintendo to Calen, so why hide it?
We unschool, and when we first started it...my kids watched A LOT of TV. But, after the newness of it wore off, they started doing other things. We have entire days that go by that the TV stays off til dad comes home (the HE unwinds and watches TV :) ) On those days, they play games, do lots and lots of 'imaginary' play, etc. Having faith in your child's ability to make good choices is a big one for many parents..... but it's sooooo necessary for the good of the whole.
