i have dell i9400 too and my 7900gs has the same problem..

try and use a alternative external port to see if it is your screen the has the problem or check your bios

the card was broken,I tried the secondary video port. this is a tipical problem of 7900gs nvidia.

Now I've mounted on 9400 a different card refurbished, a nvidia quadro fx 2500, it looks to work good.
