I do not think the piece is slow at all, I think the speed is inside that makes the score. Moreover Joao Pires is one of the best interpreters of Chopin I have ever heard.
I always feel she cant get more than a forte out of a piano.Smaller woman Bachauer have played the Rachman and Brahms concerti.DeLarrocha did it all. This woman is true music but her command seems limited. Imagine her in Elliot Carter or a Brahms concerto.the day she plays Boulez my respect will grow. Considered one of the greatest alive but I cant even imagine her inHammerklavier or op101! What I dont know maybe. She made her rep in Beeth?...
@lovesGenet she missed the repeat of the exposition which i HATE and it doesn't sound right i'm sure Chopin didn't have it there just for fun! also you are correct about the lack of forte
One of the most perfectly measured and musicianly performances I've heard. Pires is perfection itself.
Just as Chopin has unveiled to us some compelling and climactic episode - an odyssey of cedar panelled events at a given time in his own life - so too does Pires cross the threshold to make his music her own and give us the most superlative reading of a most superlative work.
There is no excess here, but a formal beauty as noble as it is poetic and as poetic as it is grand. Bless her!
@Scampdude no i know she didn't just forget! a lot of pianists do the same but i think it spoils the piece personally as i am sure Chopin would've cos he hardly would've done it as a repeat in the first place would he?
muito lindo

Se Chopin a escutasse, teria dúvida se era ele ou Maria João Pires que estaria tocando.
Tamanha a perfeição.

I know Maria is a great pianist but I don't like this piece- too slow, too somber, too blah!
I do not know if Chopin wrote it like that or if she just had a terrible, terrible day.
Either way, this is not one of my favorites.

What an incredible musician and pianist. Students fortunate enough Ronaldo with her should be very grateful.

She always has the perfect touch, speed and expressive fire in her playing. My favorite Chopin interpreter (Cziffra comes in at a close second).

You're right! Do you think she just forgot? After such a big rit it would be hard to try and add the repeat on lol :)

One of the best Fantaisie ever recorded...moreover, her Nocturnes for Deutsche Grammophon published in 1996 are milestones in classical music.
