Wilson got the upper hand on this fight. His punches seemed cleaner and more devastating. Kudos to Clark for showing heart. I'm not a Behn Wilson fan at all but to all those that think Clark won, your delusional.
@hoyfanofboulder i think if the refs stayed out of it, Jonathan would eventually get the tko as he had more stamina....but if it's 20 seconds or less Wendell would outpunch him i think. Two great fighters.
@jperez1910 I just said the same exact thing when I watched Wendel throw punches at a downed Mike Peluso. Found myself saying 'Come on, Clarkie - you're better than that.'
when you mentioned that Peluso fight i went and watched it. Peluso was throwing punches from the ice. so you can't really blame Clark for punching him back.
@Synthesis17 Now I see that, and yeah, if you're gonna keep tossing fists from the ice, that's a meathead move and you deserve the leverage disadvantage.
Wilson would have killed Wendel 10 years earlier but in 1986, whole other story. Wendel would have fought him in his prime or not which is why he will always have my respect.
Hate teams if you want. but history shows Wendel Clark to be one of the best leaders inLeafs history! He lead by example, scoring around 20+/ year but many were important goals. he energized his team with hits, fights and generally gritty play. He didn't take cheap shots and he wouldn't let his opposition either. Great vid.
wilson's right cross late in the fight would have crippled any guy off the street. clark had an iron skull though. he showed up nicely here against a much feared heavyweight
Big Behn never lost a fight in the NHL. How about the way he smacked Wendall after Wendall tried to take advantage of the jersey over Behn's head? Just another day at the office for Wilson.
That was a draw at best, both landed some great shots Clark won the start and Wilson won the end. But has to be a draw because neither wanted to stop until it was over.
a draw? your kidding right? If that fight would of lasted any longer Clark would of been knocked out at the end. I don't consider that a draw, i would say that was a ass whopping. To me Wilson and Fotiu were my all time fav
If by cheap-shot you truly mean 'destroyer of souls', then yes he was.
By my description, cheap shot artists were players like Ulf Samuelsson, Slava Fetisov, and Bryan Marchment in addition to many more. Clark is better than all of them.

americans pretending to know about hockey is a joke...stick to baseball..wendel was a warrior because he fought all comers regardless or height weight or reputation..
Now THERE'S a brilliant comment. Speaking of jokes...YOU would undoubtedly be surprised by how much many of us know about hockey. It used to be Canada's domain, but no more.
And can you give us examples of when Wendel was in trouble? I've seen Wendel take his fair share of punches but as far as him being destroyed? thats NEVER happened, as far as him being ko'd or TKO'd again NEVER happened, so watch a few more Wendel fights and you'll figure out soon enough why he was probably the toughest lb for lb player EVER!!!!!!
Umm. let me see: There was John Kordic (knocked Wendel down, rung his bell, then the linesmen jumped in), Bob Probert (Wendel grabbed Bob's leg like a girl after Bob put him down. Wendel was never the same physically), Marty McSorely (3 fights, the refs had to save him from certain injury), Harold Snepsts (knocked Wendy to his knees, and refs jumped in to save him). Refs also had to hold back Grimson, to keep Wendel from being killed. Also had to save him from Mark Tinordi. Shall I go on?
So, you can't argue with my logic, so you make a personal attack. Gosh, you're soooo smart and funny. Why don't you go back to your masterbating to old Leaf's clips on you tube. lol.
What logic? Everything you stated in the above statement is irrelevant. It doesn't matter if it is Clark or Probert. If one fighter is getting handled, then the linesman must get involved. It isn't just Clark who gets helped.
That was my point.
Your theory is that the league must protect Clark then, like it does Crosby today. This, is inaccurate.
The difference is, Crosby doesn't run around taking cheap shots or trying to deliberately injure people; OR jump on some rookie non-fighter; all the while trying to create some reputation as a "tough guy"; and then need to be rescued. I'd say there's plenty of relevancy here, in terms of the special treatment Wendy got from the league.
Even a cow can understand that; but apparently not you.
By the way, are you still enjoying your old leafs clips?
He never knocked Wendel down, he hit him hard ad Wendel turned away, after Wendel hit him 10X. Probert got Wendel in the spin cylce, kind of hard to get going, Wendel was 3-1 vs the Heavyweight champ of the league. Snepts never knocked Clark down, if you've EVER been in a fight other than with your sister it was Clarks momentum, Snepts was throwing noogies. Grimson? this is the reason Clark was injured so oftern from fighting bums with 5 career goals.
is there not a wendel fight on here that you havent tried to bad mouth? I doubt very much so that there was a conspiracy developed by nhl officials to help Wendel when he got into a fight.
Grimson dropped his stick to make it look good (like he wanted to fight Wendel) I didn't see Grimson take one step towards him though. Tinordi never knocked wendel down either useless, I said before he took a few good punches but you've yet to indicate a TKO/KO for anyone vs. Wendel. McSorely was 3-2 vs. Wendel and he wore that shiner for the rest of the p/o's. Tell me Mcsorely didn't take 4 of the best strokes to the face you've ever seen. Stop screwing your Aunt & get real here! B.S'r
ok youre an idiot that never played hockey beyond high school! LMAO
Wendel is my 3rd favorite player ever behind Neely and Tocchet...but you have to admit when he lost, in order to be a true fan! Tinordi OWNED Wendel! It was a bad match up. Clark needed to jump out into a lead when fighting his opponents! He rarely squared off cleanly, but prefered to have landed a few punches before his opponent was set.(not a bad way to fight-just not the fairest)
as a favorite player to watch? why wouldnt it be? I suppose you'd rather watch a NY Ranger player play? ROTFLMAO Oh wait..none of them could match any of the 3 players I named in Rangers HISTORY!
I did love Gillies and Nystrom though..but you sound like a Rangers cunt!
You don't think anyone knew Wendel was a fighter? You think someone would have got the jump on Clark first? But while you played with your skates in your mouth I was playing Jr A (not your fantasy league). Check Neely Sameulson( Hartford) Who jumped who? Tinordi did well against Wendel but Wendel was never hurt from him and most likely shouldn't have been fighting. Probert was TKO'd many times as was Kocur, And Clark fought 3 of the top 10 in Wilson, Probert, McSorely need I say more?
Who fucking said I didn't think anyone knew wendel was a fighter? Are you a moron? Fighters gain reputations for how they fight! Wendel had a reputation for hitting his opponent before he was set. Don Cherry has talked about it dozens of times.
Now as to your claim to have played junior A, what team did you play for? It's funny that you didn't say tier 1 or tier 2!
I played at Boston College because I didn't quit school at 15 like you Canadian idiots! lol
Right! you went to Boston College to become a Cop? And I've got an on-line degree from NASA. Tier 2 OHA. Wendel wasn't about squaring off and dancing around for show, he got right down to business. When they honoured #17 in Nov. Dan Maloney said Wilson didn't look like himself in this fight and it didn't work out too well for him. And since I know everything you've accomplished in your Moms basement, I'll take his word, nothing personal....
That's funny...Wendel said he just kept swinging because if he didn't he thought he would get killed. Wendel himself said he was happy to have earned a draw. I'll take Wendel's word over Dan Maloney's anyday, fuckstick! LMAO

Toughest pound for pound? Nope! Clark lost to an over the hill Behn Wilson in a good fight. Stan Jonathan beat a younger Behn Wilson, and Stan was only 175lbs! George McPhee was another lb for lb contender.
Now nobody is saying Wendel wasn't tough, but I'm saying he did lose fights, and he didn't fight nearly as many times as Probert OR Kocur! 50% of his NHL fights occured his first 3 years in the league! Kocur had 100 more fights and Probert had twice as many!
Wilson was 28 in this fight, Clark was 19, Wilson didnt hurt his back until later in that same season...Jonathon lost to Jim Nill and Rick Vaive, yes Rick Vaive, he played maybe 5 seasons, Clark played 14 and 10 were with a nasty chronic, back injury, Jonathon dropped 2 guys in his career, Clark dropped at least 25.

Imagine Wilson made short work of Clark Gillies, yet had a tough time with an 18 year old Wendel Clark. Wendel early, Wilson late. Clark got some good ones in with Behns shirt over his head.
You F heads are soooooooo over rating wilson...not to take anything away...good fighter...good balance...but as Potty head helmetted fighters go...you got ta go without helmets or SHUT DA FUK UP! against non-helmeted players...can be a substantial disadvantage.
As a Blues fan, I hated Clark in those days, but he was worth the price of admission to watch. Good ole slam-bang western Canada kid. A damn shame that players like him are extinct now. A bunch of face-shield wearing, all their teeth having, no scars on their pretty faces, finesse skating pussies. And that includes the Canadian players, not just the Europeans.
Idiot. The guy must be an idiot.Stuck in the key. When he came up with a user name, he got his finger stuck in the key.Of phrases. He starts his sentences off with a collection of phrases.Short of a picnic. He is two sandwiches short of a picnic.
Wendel proved what he was made of time and time again throughout his entire career. He did a great job taking on the one of the best all time heavyweights, goddamn Wilson was tough.
that was one hell of scrap... Behn Wilson was one of the toughest dudes of all time and it just shows you how tough Wendel Clark was to take some of Wilson's best shots and comeback with great punches of his own...great clip.
I HATED B Wilson, but damn could he fight, he really could 1 of the best NHL fighters ever. Wendel Clark was a emotional great player who was all HEART/SOUL, todays league needs these type players instead of pussy euro's who dont bring ANY emotion or hitting to the game! (zzz boring) Fans love a guy who bring his "lunchbox" to work and works hard! long live tuff hockey
Great fight! Check out what Clark said about this one on the Don Cherry Show. "I thought if I stopped puching he'd kill me". That's respect among gladiators. Wendel was all heart. Wilson was a monster!
Great example of the way hockey used to be. By the time this 1986 fight happened, Wilson's fighting skills had diminished but as a rookie in 1978-79, he took on all comers. Instead of the "hold with your left, throw with your right" tactic that a lot of fighters used back in the 1970's, Wilson mastered the art of taking a couple punches to get into position and then unleashing his powerful uppercut. Probert took that strategy to the next level. Wilson was easily a top 3 fighter in his day.
Wendel took so many shots, he got more than he gave.

Snepts never knocked Clark down, if you've EVER been in a fight other than with your sister it was Clarks momentum, Snepts was throwing noogies. Grimson? this is the reason Clark was injured so oftern from fighting bums with 5 career goals.
Suprarush 3 years ago
thats because clark is a leaf legend and i agrre with you no one ever laid clark out..
67cabman 3 years ago
this fight was unusually long...Clarks fights last about 10 to 15 seconds with the other guy laying on the ice.

is there not a wendel fight on here that you havent tried to bad mouth? I doubt very much so that there was a conspiracy developed by nhl officials to help Wendel when he got into a fight.
adamus77 3 years ago

He rarely squared off cleanly, but prefered to have landed a few punches before his opponent was set.(not a bad way to fight-just not the fairest)

what a surpise.. boston player on yr list!
jcnyoooooooooooout 3 years ago
as a favorite player to watch? why wouldnt it be? I suppose you'd rather watch a NY Ranger player play? ROTFLMAO Oh wait..none of them could match any of the 3 players I named in Rangers HISTORY!
I did love Gillies and Nystrom though..but you sound like a Rangers cunt!
BoSoxnation1972 3 years ago
You don't think anyone knew Wendel was a fighter? You think someone would have got the jump on Clark first? But while you played with your skates in your mouth I was playing Jr A (not your fantasy league). Check Neely Sameulson( Hartford) Who jumped who? Tinordi did well against Wendel but Wendel was never hurt from him and most likely shouldn't have been fighting. Probert was TKO'd many times as was Kocur, And Clark fought 3 of the top 10 in Wilson, Probert, McSorely need I say more?
Suprarush 3 years ago
Who fucking said I didn't think anyone knew wendel was a fighter? Are you a moron? Fighters gain reputations for how they fight! Wendel had a reputation for hitting his opponent before he was set. Don Cherry has talked about it dozens of times.
Now as to your claim to have played junior A, what team did you play for? It's funny that you didn't say tier 1 or tier 2!
I played at Boston College because I didn't quit school at 15 like you Canadian idiots! lol
BoSoxnation1972 3 years ago
Right! you went to Boston College to become a Cop? And I've got an on-line degree from NASA. Tier 2 OHA. Wendel wasn't about squaring off and dancing around for show, he got right down to business. When they honoured #17 in Nov. Dan Maloney said Wilson didn't look like himself in this fight and it didn't work out too well for him. And since I know everything you've accomplished in your Moms basement, I'll take his word, nothing personal....
Suprarush 3 years ago

BoSoxnation1972 3 years ago
Wilson was 28 in this fight, Clark was 19, Wilson didnt hurt his back until later in that same season...Jonathon lost to Jim Nill and Rick Vaive, yes Rick Vaive, he played maybe 5 seasons, Clark played 14 and 10 were with a nasty chronic, back injury, Jonathon dropped 2 guys in his career, Clark dropped at least 25.
PunChonChin 2 years ago
Vaive's NHL career; 1979-1992, 14+ seasons, 441 goals.

Imagine Wilson made short work of Clark Gillies, yet had a tough time with an 18 year old Wendel Clark. Wendel early, Wilson late. Clark got some good ones in with Behns shirt over his head.
Suprarush 3 years ago
You F heads are soooooooo over rating wilson...not to take anything away...good fighter...good balance...but as Potty head helmetted fighters go...you got ta go without helmets or SHUT DA FUK UP! against non-helmeted players...can be a substantial disadvantage.
jcnyut000000000000 3 years ago
I was watching this game and I still remember this fight. Wendell had a look on his face as he was going to the box....like he had seen a ghost.
Behn was a very tough fighter.

I wish they would drop the instigator, than we would see more good clean hockey like this, and less dirty bullshit like avery and tootoo.

Can you imagine some clinch and hug idiot from today like Stortini or Parros going with one of these two? What happened to the fighters like this?

As a Blues fan, I hated Clark in those days, but he was worth the price of admission to watch. Good ole slam-bang western Canada kid. A damn shame that players like him are extinct now. A bunch of face-shield wearing, all their teeth having, no scars on their pretty faces, finesse skating pussies. And that includes the Canadian players, not just the Europeans.

Wendel proved what he was made of time and time again throughout his entire career. He did a great job taking on the one of the best all time heavyweights, goddamn Wilson was tough.
Kainnmaul 3 years ago
Great showing by the much smaller Clark, but win for Behn Wilson, who came on real strong, at the end...

Draw.....behn wilson deserves points on respect.

One of the greatest fights i`ve seen on this. Two very well respected tough guys.Another one was Jonathan and Bouchard.
pklmlynn 3 years ago
that was one hell of scrap... Behn Wilson was one of the toughest dudes of all time and it just shows you how tough Wendel Clark was to take some of Wilson's best shots and comeback with great punches of his own...great clip.

Marv Albert showed this scrap on the David Letterman Show when Dave was on NBC. He called the segment "The Albert Achievement Awards."
