pool glove like, makes your stroke smoother, and stuff on your hand doesnt gunk up the stick either, or vise versa. not sure about many more reasons

In addition to what he said, it also keeps your shaft from getting dirty from the oils on your hands, and from chalk residue left on your hand from chalking.
