This is an excellent documentary - highly convincing. Those interested in the well-argued case that Maybrick was Jack the Ripper should read the carefully researched book by Paul Feldman called 'Jack the Ripper: the Final Chapter'. As an Oxford D.Phil. in literary analysis, I found that book and its painstaking investigation into, and marshalling of, numerous items of evidence supporting the genuineness of the Ripper Diary to be conclusive. Maybrick almost certainly was the Ripper.

I think the evidence is sufficient to show that James Maybrick was indeed the Ripper but were there possibly accomplices, men who protected him? The very eyewitness accounts alone definitely point to James but strange that the police would investigate suspects who did not match the description given of the man.

@theakstonsrock just read two books on this diary written from a or and against perspective. I have come to the conclusion, after reading all that is known, that this diary is genuine. You have to understand that "ripperolgy" is a full time job for alot of people who call themselves "ripperologists" and if the true identity of Jack was to be known there lifes work would be null and void. Not to mention the financial damage to them. These people refute the diary at all costs and will often....

I take it some of the things you say were left out include the "poste house" and the position of the FM on the wall (due to there being reports that there was a wash basin there that was moved just prior to the picture being taken.)If those are the sort of things of which you speak then there has been evidence found that once again supports the diary.There is more supporting it than against it I promise you.The diary is genuine.

@1860george ......got to the bottom of it all in the end and went public saying that it had come from carolines family.Caroline had begged him not to so when he did, she dumped him.Now, in a pathetic attempt to get her back,he's saying he wrote it.They asked him how he mixed the ink so it would pass the tests and he couldn't answer.He couldn't answer any of their questions and so was dismissed.That is a very,very brief account of what took place but the best I can do on here.

The diary is good but has several flaws. Most knowldege of diary seems to have been taken from press reports and it was not helped when the owner Michael Barret later confessed to a newspaper for forging it. As a result there are many common errors which surely if it was the killer's diary he would not have such error. The diarist said he threw all the organs over the room in Kelly's murder when in fact they were placed on a table.

Very interesting. There is another documentary which convincingly suggests the mortuary assistant as being a likely suspect. That's just it. You can easily make things fit to give a convincing story but the fact of the matter is there is just no definitive proof. But it's the mystery that keeps us all hooked. Do we really want the case to be solved? I'd rather keep the mystery!

I read the book when it came out and even after 'affidavits' from Barrett, that were retracted and restated, I still believe that M is the man.

Frustrating how money (or other ulterior motive) makes people staunchly denounce the 'diary' regardless of how compelling it is as an insight into the mind of a psychopathic killer & addict. The 'diary' was never proven beyond shadow of doubt to be a hoax (or genuine). Reading the 'diary' transcript is a must.

Whether it is the truth or a hoax this makes a very interesting and creepy diary to read. Might as well leave it to time and the experts to find the truth. Then again no one was there to witness those account or met JTR apart from his victims, on the act.... Oh yes and that witness who was threatened if he revealed JTR's true identify.

This for me has just shed some new light as to who held Jack the Ripper's real identity. I do not think that this diary is a hoax, but if it is its a bloody good one. The entries show the ravings of a mad man, just because it is staring us in the face that James Maybrick may be the Ripper doesn't mean that its "all too easy" or its a "fake". People who claim to be "experts" can be so narrow-minded.

I was wondering if H.H.Holmes could of been the ripper, nobody has ever considered this, is it because it is documentated that he was in america at that time? He was a doctor and a surgeon and his killing spree started in 1888, just a year after the murders in london. He would have all the potencial of being the ripper.

I got this book YEARS back when it first hit the stands. Since then and watching the hubub that went on since, ther has been so much static and threats toward the gentleman that brought the book forward - and so much of it has been a real see-saw of "he said this" or "he said that", that at this point the books is going to remain always under the shadow of question........I remain of the opinion, that it is for real.

Interesting comment. I have little doubt of the diary authenticity. The question became what organizations J Mayberry was associated with. The bottom line is all secret societies are Satanic with or without oblivious members knowledge. Having no knowledge of the fraud,I still find it difficult to believe you can take it seriously. The only thing that bothers me about this diary, is that it contains no actual dates. Was it common for diary entries of that time, or ever, to have no dates? I would think that it would either be appropriately dated, or simply no have no indication of a date entirely. But, "Dated this third day"?

You're right; that's one of the indicators that it is phony. The form of Victorian diaries was quite rigid- for instance, the day's weather & temperature were generally noted. They weren't done "stream of consciousness" style; that's 20th C. And actually WRITING the word "Dated" is silly; just like writing the word "Signed"... like the permission slip forged by a fellow 9th Grader that lets you stay home from school for the day : "Signed, Jack's Mother"

i have not watched this documentary since i was a kid, great to see it again. personnaly i dont think it was a hoax. i think with everything that is shocking or almost unbelievable. when it is handed to the public, they dismiss it, as it is always easier to just say no it cant be. rather than to subjectivly look at the facts and accept them for what they are.

I would very much like to believe that this is true. It is certainly by far the neatest and most beguiling theory on Jack the Ripper I've ever heard yet. The greatest problem is that it may be just a little too easy. However, just because something is implausible does not mean it's impossible. I greatly enjoyed watching these videos.

I have now watched this all the way through twice and will no doubt watch it again.

I am now more convinced it is a hoax largely because of the letters - trying to fit all the famous ones in no matter what is just pushing it too far. But not the many lesser known letters which leads me to think the author had not used the archival evidence. Nonetheless it is a brilliant hoax and I cannot believe that Mr Barrett was directly responsible for it.

The use of the word 'to top oneself' may only have appeared in the dictionaries in 1934 but the lead time then was much longer than today. It is perfectly possible that it existed long before the Ripper murders.

Arguments against:

1. In 1995 Michael Barrett admitted he forged this with his wife although he lated retracted his confession. But his confessions also need to be questioned as he is not an educated person (as the hoaxer is - if that is what the diary is!)

2. The real Jack would have to have been a local. An outsider renting a room in Middlesex street would have stood out during the crime investigation particularly if he were floating in and out on murder days.

There are a huge amount of films like this on the internet.

I accept that this is a very compelling argument. Whereas today the diary is believed to be a hoax, and the finder has signed several affadavits to this end, reading the affadavits on the internet, one cannot believe that it is the same person as the fraudster clearly is not very educated.

I suggest other people look at them also.

My opinion is that it is probably a very clever fraud but I leave the possibility that it may be true.
