yes actually...nasa saw on the video play backs of the take offs while the shuttle was still in space tht somethings came off the external tank and plunged a small whole the size of a bowling ball on the bottom of the shuttle which is y now the shuttle must spin 180 degrees for the space station to observe the enitre shuttle for any damage on lift off

They know the risks. That's why they're retiring the shuttle fleet in a few years. It was ahead of it's time in someways yet it's a flawed design ultimately. God rest their souls and Godspeed.
