Thanks Monsoonami Your tutorials are great. Easy to hear and easy to understand.. I have watched them over a few times and have tried some of them out and hay wow have to say they have all worked out great. Maybe not quite as good as yours look but I'm happy with the results. Keep up the wonderful work and hope to see more from you... Take Care...
Great video. I also want to make a note of a small touch you did with this and the other video regarding the script/plugin installation. I like how in that video, when you click the annotation to come back to this vid, it jumps to right where you mention having installed them. Nice.
I tried this and it came out really blurry. I used the anisotropic smoothing in G'MIC. Followed everything exactly Any ideas as to why my text is blurry?
Awesome - I'm the world's biggest NOOB at stuff like this, never used or even seen Photoshop or anything like this until a week ago. Following your tutorial got this straight away, turned my horrifically basc title for my website/forum into a chromed one - no one believed I did it myself - a week ago I couldn't even understand layers or resize an image!!!! THANK YOU x1000 :D
Is this for Windows only? Can it be done on Mac?? It appears that LayerFx is only available for Windows or Linux but I could be wrong. I simply couldn't figure out how to do it.
@gt8gtrman It should work on any computer capable of running gimp. You just need to download the layerfx.scm file and put it in your gimp scripts folder. The location of your gimp scripts folder will depend on what sort of computer you have though.
well, maybe not the entire tutorial, but just if you could just add what would have to be done differently for the gold effect in stead of silver.....thanks!
@holwerdainc Follow the tutorial up to 3:25, where I used the Curves tool. Instead of using the Curves tool, go to the Blend tool (Gradient tool), and set the Gradient to the one called "Golden."
Then go to Colors > Map > Gradient Map. That should make the text appear to be golden.
Then, after skipping the curves tool part, follow the rest of the tutorial pretty much unchanged, except in the "Stroke" dialog box, set the Opacity to 100 and the Blending Mode to "Soft Light."
@monsoonami Thank you very much for your reply. I will be finishing up the final touches today. I would like to share a screenshot of what I accomplished from your tutorial, where should I send it or post it?
Disregard the latest one also - I just needed to reconfigure my mouse... I didn't know the question was irrelevant to Gimp. BTW. I'm a very new Gimp user and have really no problem following this video at all. Just pausing a lot which is a very minor inconvenience. Thanks and I look forward to watching more!
@monsoonami Mac user here. I don't have a right clicker, but that's never been a problem as I can hold down Control when clicking. However, it doesn't work when I'm trying to "right click" my text layer in order to select "Merge Down" as mentioned right around 3:20. This might be a user error, but I thought I would check to see if you maybe anyone else can enlighten me.
@monsoonami I have a Scrip-Fu drop down, but I can't select Bevel and Emboss or any of the Layer Effects because they are grayed out. What am I doing wrong?
Would love to see a couple of tutorials about making your own background papers for use with scrapbooking. Something with small flowers on it etc. Have not found many on this one yet. But if you know of any please let me know. Ones with talking in them...TA HEEPS !!!
Last time I worked in a serious graphics program was over 10 years ago. You've just become my hero. So much has changed in the graphics industry the damn thing had me in tears and ready to reprogram with an ax. You have just made my day......maybe my entire month.
@toromusic Inside gimp, look in Edit > Preferences > Folders > Scripts to see the file locations where gimp will automatically look for your scripts. Also, the G'MIC plugin must go in the plugins folder, not the scripts folder.
Mr Monsoonami: I dont know if you are considered really good at GIMP or if you have the skills of an average user. What I do know is that you know a freaking boatload of stuff that would take me decades to learn. Which leads to my question: how did you learn these little "tricks" such as choosing "anisotropic smoothing" instead of "total variation flow" or "hot pixels filtering?" It is amazing how many hundreds of variables are on these programs & how you learned them! Im amazed at this ability
@brikster00 I originally used a different plugin called GREYCstoration, which did not have so many settings, but the people who created that plugin replaced it with a new one called G'MIC, which has many many more features. But they posted that the "anisotropic smoothing" feature inside of G'MIC was basically the same as the original GREYCstoration plugin, so that's how I knew which option to choose. I chose the settings inside of anisotropic smoothing based on my own experimentation.
@psycopenguin99 Not sure. I've never tried gimp portable. Did you check your preferences inside gimp to see where it is looking for your scripts and plugins?
@psycopenguin99 Yeah, I think you can make your own folders wherever you want, but you'll need to add the location of those folders to your preferences so gimp knows where to look for your plugins and scripts.
@monsoonami Great Vid! The opacity doesn't bring the beveled edges back for me. At 2:55 of the video: I duplicated text layer and ticked Lock. I set the colors to black and white, made sure gradient was still checked, clicked the bottom of the text and dragged straight up. Everything was fine up till that point. When I lowered the opacity down to 20, (around 3:10 mark of video), the beveled edges don't come back. Any ideas? Thanks - FYI: I didn't get the zlib1.dll in G'MIC download.
@MNOptions So, what does happen when you lower the opacity? Does it just let the background show through? Also, make sure you had the topmost layer selected before lowering the opacity.
@MNOptions If you are changing the opacity of the "GIMP copy" layer, and the appearance of the image remains the same, then your "GIMP" layer must look the same as your "GIMP copy" layer. Did you somehow apply the gradient to both of those text layers?
@monsoonami Duh me. I was lowering the opacity in the toolbox, not the layers. Helps when you pay total attention to a video and the explanation. I had both tool box and layers window the same size. I went back to the toolbox instead of the layers window to change opacity. I'm so sorry for wasting your time. When I resized my toolbox to a size like you have, it helped me figure out what I did wrong. Thank you for your help. In the end, helped me figure out what I was doing wrong.
I have GIMP 2.6 and I've installed the files and stuff on there. Yet, the Script-Fu still doesn't show up. I've put the .SCM file into the "scripts" folder. Refreshed and nothing changed. Any help here?
@0k0t0 Which OS are you using? Which scripts folder did you put it in? If you're using Windows, make sure you didn't accidentally save the .scm file as a .txt file instead.
@0k0t0 If you put the "layerfx.scm" file in your "...\username\.gimp-2.6\scripts\" folder and restarted gimp, then it should show up. So you don't get the "Script-Fu" menu next to "Filters" at all? Please go to Edit>Preferences in gimp. Then, in the list on the left, choose "Scripts," which is listed under "Folders." Make sure the file location where you saved the script shows up in that list on the right.
@2000Benjim If you want to work on the image more later, save it in GIMP's native format XCF, which preserves layers and such. Once you're done and want to actually use the image, you'll need to save it as probably a JPG or PNG.
Hi, I followed your tut exactly but the only problem i'm having is when i get to the part where you use the eclipse tool to draw the shadow under the letters, I click on the bucket fill but when i put the bucket fill icon on the section where it needs to fill, nothing happens and theres a (/) symbol next to the bucketfill icon. Can you please help me? thanks

If so cud u do a tutorial on hw to download n instal 4 windows pls.? As im reali stuck on wot to do. Wud be reali pleased if u cud
@LoveAnythingPink The "Video" menu appears when you install GAP, which is the GIMP Animation Package. It's a plug-in for working with animations, extracting frames from videos, etc. I haven't tried Resynthesizer yet, but I might get around to it some day.
Great Video! I'm new at Gimp and would like to know how to do a ribbon effect. Maybe a better way to describe it would be like a bolt of fabric. Some fabric is pulled off the bolt. More is pulled off but doesn't go out as far so it loops. Each successive loop is shorter so from the side it has a back and forth wave-like effect. I want this to flow horizontally, left to right, and cover the entire page. Thanks for any help you can give me.
@anxietyrelieftoday I'm not really sure I understand exactly what you're looking for. Is there any way you can demonstrate what you need with a picture? You might also have better luck finding help by posting your question on a GIMP forum like gimper.net, gimptalk.com, etc.

Make this tutorial for Photoshop.

@RetardedChibi Sorry, I don't use Photoshop and have no plans to start using it anytime soon. Besides, there are probably plenty of PS tutorials showing a similar effect.

@monsoonami Actually there aren't many and the few there are kind of suck.
