@Kasaidon You make a good point, if he was folding his hakama on his own. However, he was simply trying to make room for the camera to get all the angles and not be obstructed by his body.
Then it would be the angle problem, if he could shift the angle a bit, there would not be a problem catching every bit and still mantain a proper sitting posture :x

If the folds are sewed (you can sew the folds yourself) it saves a lot of folding troubles. Mind you, even though if the folds are sewed, you have to fold the hakama correctly or else you get folds where you don't want them to be.
It's so the pleats don't lose their nice, crisp appearance. If you fold it sloppily, then the hakama look like crap, which is significant. How quality in which one takes care of his equipment reflects heavily on the kendoka.
This was extremely helpful and instructive. I am not sure I got all of the folds correct, but it is the first time I have ever folded a hakama. So I am sure that I will improve as time goes on. Thank you so much for this informative video.

I wish traditional Japanese clothing wasn't so uncommon, it's so cool, and looks comfortable, it would be cool to go for a walk in geta and hakama, and etc..
I was recently in Kyoto on vacation and there were people in kimono's all over the place. mostly women and children tho. very few men in their Haori/ Hakama.

Greetings Chaney Sensei! Your instruction is very practical especially when you pointed out the natural fold of the each hakama. After several tries I've realized the pleats are there as guide. True enough, the fold depends on the one wearing it. I've taught this to my fellow kendoka who are beginners(barely a year)themselves. I never leave the dojo without folding my uniform properly. OMG! that's a very sloppy way to fold your hakama, you need to pay more attention to the front folds, when you roll it, it shouldn't be taken over that hard trapezium in the back. Another mistake (huge one)is that he "tied the laces" exactly opposite, you start with the inner ones and you tie the knot using the outer ones.The good thing was arrangeing the margins before you flip the hakama front side up.The key word is symmetry... when you fold your hakama it should look as it did new.

My Aikido Instructor folds his hakama in a Iaido-style because he also practises Iaido, and the styles of Iaido and Kendo are very similar, so I can watch this video many times to memorize it - in Aikido, there's a tradition in which a student offers to fold his/her Instructor/Sensei Hakama as a way of showing respect and gratitude.

The method is taught nicely, but your dojo manners are not very good. don't sit with your knees up, or with your legs stretched out.

Folding my gi and hakama after the trainig is like having a small mokuso. Relaxing, and u cher up after u see that u did a good job on folding :)
Now I go and do some origami ;)

Watch the video again. You'll see he did indeed fold the longer himo (the "inner" ones) and tied them off using the shorter himo (the "outer" ones).
