@JerryOfPerth Hey there, well... it all depends on what sound *I* need and what I hear on the record. In this case it's the typical Jazz sound so. But I do love to play the Jazz, no doubt about that but it's not the most comfy though.
GREAT RIFFS! plus a GREAT ALBUM TOO! Tom Browne was also a great horn player. ;)
I was thinkin' ...would you, "Da Funk Star" like to be a feature on my album "The Funk Livez On"
What do you say I make a nice beat and send you the track on MP3 and you can lay down the BASSLINE (Thump style) for me? I see you're into studio sessions (must have been a honor to meet the great LOUIS JOHNSON!)
I would be honored to feature you on my album...if you wanna help me with bassline production, let me know
Hey my man, YES it would be an honor to colaborate and play some on your upcoming album as long as you send me a copy :-). I will write you personally to give you my email address so you can send the MP3's OK?
Funkstar650, question for ya, I've heard so many (bass) versions of Cosmic Slop by Funkadelic (Bootsy Collins) including my own. Like you, I love to play the bass part of a song just like the album. Can you post a video of your version of the it.......thanks! G-MAG P. S. Boosty keeps hidding his finger work in all the videos I've seen of Cosmic Slop!!! He's a slick one LOL!!!
Man you hit the nail right on the head... that would be somethin' wouldn't it? World peace wouldn't just be a couple of words coming from a Miss Universe contestant, it would be REAL. All due to the Funk! :-)
Yes!Yes!Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeees! Sir ...Love the way you hold down that groove ....All of that music from that era is completely in a class of it's own .....Killah tune
Man, you've got a great ear and smooth chops with the ol'skool stuff especially with one of my favorites tunes with Tom Browne's 'Thigh's High'. I have a question for you, what artists have you been working with lately or have you been doing ant recording or touring? Peace & Soul Grease!
Hey my man, thanx for commenting! I watched your vid as well and you got some cool classics passing through! Well done! Wow, sounds as if you're BUSY! Good to hear you're going back to New Orleans for the holidays! Hope you'll have a great time there! Hey, I have the same problems as you. 5 Of my vids have been blocked in 4 weeks or so due to copyright claims. I will only do bass lines with a drumcomputer instead of playing along the original song. I will try to post some soon!
It would be an honor to play with you! I will give you a hollar as soon as I get in the hood OK? It will take a while since I am in Europe :-). Nevertheless looking forward to play wid ya!
Peace and thanx for commenting. Appreciate it and thanx for the invititation.

Thanx so much for the moral support! I dunno why I am being attacked while I just try to honor all the great music and the artists. sure I use the original tracks to play along with but hey, noone can use it for copying or broadcasting anwyays since my bass is overruling the song! Anyways, I will keep on spreading the funk in another way :-)
I will check out Gigolette! Thanx for bringing it to my attention.
my bad....funkstar that wasn't you....I'm gonna check out improv with Xavier (a group that used to be called Wood Brass & Steel(look em up here on the tube) I was about 12 or 13 when they started we used to watch them jam in a church in Hartford CT I like the xtra licks in grips your hips and move on the vamp Good Job.....Keep Funkin' dat ol school

Yo Bro, I can play the Smurf or Fresh but I stopped doing bass play alongs due to legal issues. A few of my vids got blocked in a matter of 2 weeks so... I will only do instructional vids from now on without the original music playing in the background.
Hey funkstar, I totally love your playing, you have so much soul! I hope you can help me out, I left a video reply of this song I need help identifying, I'm pretty sure you would be able to recognize the song...thanks again!
Just commented on your Confunkshun "Touch" play along. Even though I like that song more than this one (which is great too) this one gave you "more funky thangs to play wit"(I know you get the reference, baby baba;)Anyway you tore this one up too!(peace)
Why learn to play percussion (samba), the slap for me is easy, but to pull the rope G this difficult, until I correct in time but pulled leaves a very strong or very weak, I have to train only to "pull", this hard to do with the sensitivity correct!
I know what you mean. Just take it easy at first. Slow it down to where you can play it tight and in the pocket. Later on you can speed things up.Thanx for asking!
Hi Cranberry333, thanx for the comment and I am sorry 'bout the weird faces :-). It's such a groovy tune to play it's hard to keep it that steady and funky! :-)
Hello, I look here again! I can not play the timbre (sound) of his bass, here in my bass (Cort Curbow Bass, capitation Bartolini), I love this music, but I am not able to play, you may be very fast, and I'm not able to see well .. . know the song "let's dance" of Tom Brown?
Hey there, I know what you mean with the sound. It's a distinctive sound. And remember to detune your E-string to D. I know 'Let's Dance'. That's a cool song as well!
... my English is very bad, I try to speak through a translator web ... Did you say, pass the note "E" for notes "D"? if this is an 8th above is this?

Hey there, these songs (the originals) are available on Amazon, iTunes or any other form of music related media that legally distributes music. Thanx for asking and if you need any help playin' please let me know.
Hello, I have the originals of these songs, which I had them in a score, to play and train in my Bass, unless you are okay, because I like your technique, and its videos are already a good source of study. You know "Keep It Hot" song of Banda Cameo?
Hey there, good to hear you got the original songs so you can play along. Hope my vids will help you to find out how things are played so sure you can use my vids to learn the songs. That's what I do it for. And yes I do know Keep it Hot and I have a clip of that song on YouTube. Check out my Cameo songs (mix). There's a part of Keep it Hot in there.
Hey Funkstar650, I need your help finding a song from back in the day. Marcus miller was playing this song at one of the namm shows. You can find it just type this (NAMM 2008 Sadowsky basses - Marcus Miller)He starts playing the song at 1:30. If anyone know this song you do! Thanks
wow, this song brings back good memories. I never knew it was Marcus on Tom Brown and Bernard Wright I was a Stanley Clarke and Louis Johnson nut at 14.But I remember most of the bass lines. I went back and listen to old Luther Vandross songs also. The night I fell in love and bad boy has some nice Marcus Miller bass.
Hey ascott4003, thanx for commenting and the info. Yes Luther's songs are well arranged and composed. Marcus plays a huge role as a functional bass player in there... I love it when it also sticks to that kinda bass playing. He also masters that!
Is that true? Thanx for correcting me!!! Could have sworn it was Marcus but hey, Sekou Bunch is also one HELL of a playa. All credits go to him then. Again, thanx for the info!
no prob...im a big fan of both... marcus is a beast and guess what sekou married my aunt in 81 and even tho they divorced some years later i still consider my uncle he used to play for us in the family room of my grandmothers when he wasnt on tour. what other bassists do you like?
Hey there, thanx again for writing me! Sekou Bunch your uncle? That is so kewl! Give him my regards OK? Tell him a huge fan is trying to copy his lines :-)
Look at my homepage, it tells you what other players I always listen to.
Thanx again for writing me and let's keep in touch OK?
Hey there julito7850, thank you so much for the enthousiastic reply. If you check out my homepage and my other vids you WILL find my cover of 'Work That Sucker to Death' :-)
LOL it's OK. I understand you are at work (so am I :-)). I did some other Con Funk Shun and 'Nard stuff... go check out my page. I think you will recognize most of the songs I cover since you know so much about Funk!
Yo bro, you got that right, this is a tough one to play... the groove is phat, the timing is sharp and the power is needed to play it right. Didn't do a perfect job though but I tried my best to make it as perfect as possible. My face shows it LOL :-)
You feel every single note man.. Can tell from your expression.. Love your playing as usual. Song's too funky u can't resist.. u just gotta play it.. hehe..
Great!! Would be an honor to jam someday. BUT you gotta be patient here. Either I have to save up some money for a ticket or it takes a few months to swim across the Atlantic Ocean. I come from the Netherlands, that's why! :-) Nevertheless I would love to get together and jam some one day!
hey i was in the netherlands a few years back I was playing with this High school choir " Crenshaw High Elite Choir". I'll try to see if i have any old programs of where we played.
dude first off ..awesome I'm a big funk fan, nathaniel phillips, louis johnson, marcus miller etc. FYI the bass player on this tune is a guy named Sekou Bunch. I'm 47 you inspired me to do the same on guitar. Keep Groovin !!!
hey honeybear716, thanx for correcting me! I could have sworn this was Marcus playing this particular tune. I knew Sekou Bunch plays on this album as well but I thought that Marcus played this one. Thanx for commenting and let's jam together someday OK?
No need to apologize for makin' the "FUNKY FACE." Hey, if a bass player ain't makin' heads nod, asses wiggle, or makin' people get the FUNKY FACE, then he AIN'T NO BASS PLAYER! Hell, when I watch and listen to you, I GET THE FUNKY FACE...and there's not many people that I can say that about these days!!! Keep 'em comin!
Thanx Odawg96, glad I met YOU get the funky face :-). Means I do at least somethin' right! And I totally agree with you when it comes to puttin' soul and heart into the playing instead of being all technical etc. It's ot the technique that counts, it's the feel that more than half of the playing!!
Hey Funkstar how can I learn to play like you? I am currently a trumpet player but I'm trying to pick up bass. Any tips you can give me would be great! Thanks, you are an awesome bass player!
Hey Powercard, learn to play like me? It's better to learn how to play like the great players I am honoring with my vids but I know what you mean :-).On my homepage there are a few tips on how to learn to play these lines. If you need any more help please let me know!
Hey frfremont, another one from the same group of musician friends with Marcus, Lenny White, Tom Browne, Bernard Wright etc. etc. (don't know IF these guys are on this tune but it's from the same gang). Like I said earlier, these guys now how to get that Funk going.
how long have you been playing bass? and is it bad NOT to use your "bird finger" on the frets. i just dont use them lol. very nice youre a relly good bass player.
Hey Korzahn, I've been playing off and on for about 20 somewhat years now. What do you mean with 'bird finger'? Is that the index finger? Anyways, nomatter how you play things, nothing is 'bad' in my opionion as long as you keep the groove going. Even if you play with your feet! :-)
Great, lately I've been playing along a lot with Tom Browne, Don Blackman and Cameo so I love your selection of covers ;) . I don't know if you take requests but here's mine: Don Blackman - Heart's Desire.
Hey spaceonthebass, thanx for the comment. Yes I do take requests. Only requests that do fit my style though which is Funk of course. Heart's Desire is on that fits that list perfectly! Will get to that one as soon as I got more time. Pretty busy at the moment...
LOL, well 41 clips sofar with a variety of funk(y) classics. Hope you seen at least some of them? From Funkadelic to Marcus Miller. Party on Plastic isn't the only P-funk tune I did. Did you see Slapbak's version of 'Thank You'?
Hope you will get yourself a bass soon and start playing. That's exactly what my intension is: to inspire people to play bass. It's fun (although my face says something else LOL)
Oh yeah, I've been browsing them yesterday and today. Subscribed 'cause I want to see more. Not only have you inspired me, but I've been passing along videos to a friend of mine and she's motivated enough to pick her bass up and start playing again.
Kudos, man. Keep it up.
Also, how 'bout some Kool & The Gang? I've heard plenty of Brothers Johnson (rightfully so, damn good bass lines) but I can't recall two Kool play alongs.
Aww dude, awesome. I think the best part of your videos apart from your perfect playing is your facial expression. I can tell that you're really into the music, keep groovin' :)
Hi Cranberry333, thanx for the comment and I am sorry 'bout the weird faces :-). It's such a groovy tune to play it's hard to keep it that steady and funky! :-)

Ooooh... sorry I didnt reach that part yet :-p
I'm at the office and, with many colleagues, we're watching all in random play...
I'll go and have a look... Did you also do "got to be enough" by con funk shun or 'Nard's "Haboglabotribbin" ?
(and thanks for the quick reply, btw)
julito7850 3 years ago

This is a tough one to play, but you HELD IT DOWN in typical Star Fashion! Loving it bro
FUNKY.
Hernsa 3 years ago
Yo bro, you got that right, this is a tough one to play... the groove is phat, the timing is sharp and the power is needed to play it right. Didn't do a perfect job though but I tried my best to make it as perfect as possible. My face shows it LOL :-)

honeybear716 3 years ago
Great!! Would be an honor to jam someday. BUT you gotta be patient here. Either I have to save up some money for a ticket or it takes a few months to swim across the Atlantic Ocean. I come from the Netherlands, that's why! :-) Nevertheless I would love to get together and jam some one day!
Bless you as well.
funkstar650 3 years ago
hey i was in the netherlands a few years back I was playing with this High school choir " Crenshaw High Elite Choir".

Keep Groovin !!!
honeybear716 3 years ago
hey honeybear716, thanx for correcting me!

Odawg96 3 years ago
Thanx Odawg96, glad I met YOU get the funky face :-). Means I do at least somethin' right! And I totally agree with you when it comes to puttin' soul and heart into the playing instead of being all technical etc. It's ot the technique that counts, it's the feel that more than half of the playing!!
Thanx for commenting!

Hey Funkstar how can I learn to play like you? I am currently a trumpet player but I'm trying to pick up bass. Any tips you can give me would be great! Thanks, you are an awesome bass player!
powercard3 3 years ago
Hey Powercard, learn to play like me? It's better to learn how to play like the great players I am honoring with my vids but I know what you mean :-).On my homepage there are a few tips on how to learn to play these lines. If you need any more help please let me know!
Peace and success playing that bass!!!
funkstar650 3 years ago
good job. you say drop tune the e string to the key of d?
PMann9321 3 years ago
Hey PMann9321, the E-string is detuned to a D. That gives you that fat low end. Thanx for commenting!

how long have you been playing bass? and is it bad NOT to use your "bird finger" on the frets. i just dont use them lol. very nice youre a relly good bass player.
Korzahn 3 years ago
Hey Korzahn, I've been playing off and on for about 20 somewhat years now. What do you mean with 'bird finger'? Is that the index finger? Anyways, nomatter how you play things, nothing is 'bad' in my opionion as long as you keep the groove going. Even if you play with your feet! :-)
Peace and thanx for the comment.
funkstar650 3 years ago

Great, lately I've been playing along a lot with Tom Browne, Don Blackman and Cameo so I love your selection of covers ;) . I don't know if you take requests but here's mine: Don Blackman - Heart's Desire.
spaceonthebass 3 years ago
Hey spaceonthebass, thanx for the comment. Yes I do take requests. Only requests that do fit my style though which is Funk of course. Heart's Desire is on that fits that list perfectly! Will get to that one as soon as I got more time. Pretty busy at the moment...

Another masterclass in expression, man i wish more bands today played this sort of stuff
Leetav 3 years ago
Not quite as amazed as I was with Party On Plastic, but it's still enough to inspire me to grab a bass and start playing myself.
tsanigoga 3 years ago
LOL, well 41 clips sofar with a variety of funk(y) classics. Hope you seen at least some of them? From Funkadelic to Marcus Miller. Party on Plastic isn't the only P-funk tune I did. Did you see Slapbak's version of 'Thank You'?
Hope you will get yourself a bass soon and start playing. That's exactly what my intension is: to inspire people to play bass. It's fun (although my face says something else LOL)
Thanx for the comment!

funkstar650 3 years ago
Oh yeah, I've been browsing them yesterday and today. Subscribed 'cause I want to see more. Not only have you inspired me, but I've been passing along videos to a friend of mine and she's motivated enough to pick her bass up and start playing again.
Kudos, man. Keep it up.
Also, how 'bout some Kool & The Gang? I've heard plenty of Brothers Johnson (rightfully so, damn good bass lines) but I can't recall two Kool play alongs.
tsanigoga 3 years ago
Aww dude, awesome. I think the best part of your videos apart from your perfect playing is your facial expression. I can tell that you're really into the music, keep groovin' :)
