I can not get my head around what there is to learn about riding a Motorcycle. Start with a Bicycle (With some effort one can reach speeds to experience counter steering on a bicycle and it wont kill you if you get it wrong) then graduate to a motorcycle.
I've been riding for 15 years now. I've travelled to the mountains ( 2500+ Kms everytime) travelled acros states touched 100 KmPH and more on highways.
It's pure instinct. I didn't know what it was called countersteering all this time
You guys are retard this guy knows what he's talking about you don't. Do you know anything about counter steering? Don't talk shit like you know when you don't. I'm 17 and just got my licence. I wanna get a motorcycle but i'm not sure if i should. My mom says i shouldn't. Well, actually she forbids that i do. But i love bikes so much. I'm also kind of scared because i have a friend in my church who was in an accident, and he will never walk again. He's in an electric wheelchair 24/7. I also know several other people who have died or have been hurt in accidents. Anyone have any advice for me?
i would recommend you buying aprilia rsv4 aprc because its very powerful but its got great electronics so it will keep you safe but at the same time very fast and take it easy in the beginning!!
@crazypersonlol34 first you have to ask yourself why do you want to ride , if your answer is to feel the wind , look cool ,freedom and love of motorcycles I say go ahead , if you say "ride fast ,. pop wheelies and humiliate all the kids off the light with their corvettes" then I saw wait , I am 32 and just now I got a bike , i started off with a 250r kawa and it is great , if I would had gothen a bike at your age I would had killed myself the way I used to drive .
@crazypersonlol34 200mph bikes dont have to do 200 mph they can do 30 and even 60. Dont take risks, dont put yourself in a position where a car driver who can only be arsed to move his eyes and not his head wont be able to see you and just pull out. No matter how hot wear the gear especially gloves. Beware the rainbow film of death (oil and diesel) and road paint in the wet. what a total prick turn your wheel to the right to go left whaat a dick just lean to the left with left knee beft out to the left a bit and just so ever turn your wheel to the left like in motorcycle racing what a total dick
@SuperChelseaFC1905 : actually you called him out on the main thing he was correct about. Simply leaning on the bike will not get you turned quickly. If you ride, sounds like you don't, then pay attention to what you do when you lean. You at one point or another push down on the inside bar turning the wheel opposite the corner. If you still don't get it, then go straight and push on either left or right to see what happens. You can do it on your bicycle too.
to be honest guys, it's very intuitive going into a turn... it's good to know the theoretical concept behind countersteering, but i feel like when put to practice, it kind of happens on its own... given that you're not a complete idiot
also, i didn't mean to hate so much on this guy... after all he was trying to help i suppose i just don't know how
Im not sure he realizes that you have to counter steer any 2 wheeled vehicle... I certainly do it on my bicycle... This guys bicycle must defy the laws of physics or something..
@togair9 I agree. I understand it is good to be safe but It's not always practical to wear full leathers. For example, I ride my kawasaki 3 miles to work every day and suiting up just isn't practical or necessary. I always wear a helmet and leather gloves though.
This is a video obviously for beginners, so why is he not wearing the proper safety gear. I hate people who think it is cool to wear only a t-shirt and jeans, but they will figure it isn't that cool when your skin scrapes off your body, you loose fingers, or worse get killed or become paralyzed.
@Steelyflint I'm braced for a hail of abuse here, but what the hell.... MOTORCYCLES AND BICYCLES CORNER IN THE SAME WAY. ALWAYS. There's no 'you can trun it like a bike at low speed' or 'you can't turn it like it;s a bike at high speed' they work in the same way. It's physics!

I ride a motorcycle and a bicycle and I steer the two differently. Ever tried peddling your bicycle while leaning off the side for a corner? Doing stuff like that can get you beaten up for being a moron...
Cut the guy some slack, he is doing beginners a favour posting the basics.
@theashdude he said were not going to lean the motorcycle like a bicycle where going to lean the motorcycle like a motorcycle....stop trolling and get back on your bicycle
@theashdude Well, he said we turn out motorcycle like a motorcycle, as opposed to a bicycle.... I believe he meant this in the sense that you have to counter steer on a motorcycle, and you do NOT have to on a bicycle.
Counter steering is actually counter-intuitive. So him saying that was not stupid, though maybe he could of presented in a more clear manner.
@theashdude Good point. Too bad you're saying that to a brazilian who speaks portuguese, spanish, english, french and deutsch (german for you), and commited a typing error. And while I know how to use proper punctuation in all five languages, you can't do it in your main language. Interpret that, motherfucker.
@starcar66 "We want to lean our motorcycle not like a bicycle, but like an actual motorcycle." Thanks for pointing out what I already pointed out a year ago, Ace.
You don't need to ride upward of 40mph to countersteer on a bicycle or on a motorcycle. I countersteer all the time going around corners well less than 20mph on a bicycle. My Ninja probably weighs in at 430-440 and I still don't have to go 40 mph to countersteer. Countersteering applies to ALL two wheeled single track modes of transportation. Check out "Countersteering 101" or " Counter Steering" by Mordeth13. Better explanations of steering than this crappy ass vid.
A few years sounds nice, but I'm 30 and have been an avid roadie since I was 10 doing rides at SF, Mt. Tam, Mt. D and the Silverado area. It's true that countersteering is more noticeable during mountain drops at 30+mph and leaning the frame gives results but you can countersteer easily at 10-15mph through any intersection. The last guy I saw trying to turn hard into a turn by steering toward the inside while going greater than 10mph got flung off to the outside and had gravel for breakfast.
Better... However I heard nothing mentioned about acceleration, throttle control and braking. Which are just as important as counter steering. Example, when NOT to. Shoulders as well as elbows need to be used. More description into the obvious is needed.
accelerate after the apex of the corner as you straighten up, do it gradually because you dont want to lowslide, try and keep the throttle even through the corner until you accelerate and dont brake in the corner unless you know what you're doing, slow to your entry speed before you enter the corner however in an emergency you should either brake very gently (or you may lock the wheels or straighten the bike up) or lean further into the corner and counter steer more
Actually most of your comments are correct except one. You should roll on the throttle all the way through the turn. This action stabilizes the suspension of the motorcycle. Although steady throttle is good, slight roll on is better if the bike is leaned over further. The more you lean, the need for rolling on the throttle is increased due to the reduced tire circumference, which actually slows the bike down if you do not accelerate slightly. Not hating, just informing.
i'm implementing this technique now, the snow has actually helped me learn alot about stability during cornering because anything out of order and something slides. fast way to learn. thanks.
Good luck with your test. I ride a 06 CBR1000RR, a 02 Ducati 748 and a 07 Aprilia RSVR1000. I started on a Honda CB360T and rode that for 8 years until I felt comfortable moving up to the sport bikes.
Any bike can survive outside. There are many options for outside storage. There are portable garages, covers and storage systems for every need. You will find them on the internet if you do a search. Never store a motorcycle under a plastic tarp. It traps moisture under it, a bike's worst enemy. Good luck!!!
All was well until the demonstration which just looked totally bizarre considering the title of the video. Perhaps it should be renamed: "Some good basics explained about fast cornering, then some very clumsy low speed car park turns which damage my credibility".
Actually you are incorrect. This is a bad example of what not to wear while riding a motorcycle. This is not a video on how to roast potatoes, but a video on riding motorcycles, a potentially dangerous activity if you don't know what the hell you are doing. These people are not experts by any stretch of the imagination. Please don't assume. I am not a boring kid. I know what I am talking about concerning motorcycle riding. This person is a bad teacher. Go to school and learn the right way .
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
starting with your "chromo" windshield you are wrong Expertvillage... but is a good intention trying to help,. but we have to do it the right way, i mean, know prety well the topic. chiao
Some of the information is incorrect. He rides without protective gear. How informed is that? You summed it up well. He THINKS what he is sharing is positive when in reality he has no clue. That is why there are negative comments because some people on this thread know more than he does.
Yeah, these people have no clue. I love the demonstration of the fast cornering. lmao. My wife can corner faster than this and she just learned to ride. Shit, my 14 year old step son was mastering the MSF evaluation exercises at 10 years old. This guy has no idea what fast cornering is. What concerns me is that some people take this information as the gospel truth and could hurt themselves using this bogus information. I search these video to make people aware that some of these tips are bad.
I've seen your videos, they're full of mostly rubbish and I think you should either show us you actually have more skill than somebody who passed their test last week or remove them.
I am a learner, just gone from a scooter to a motorcycle and can countersteer on my scooter, no problem, but am having trouble on my bike, is it the same? Does it have anything to do with the thickness of the tyres? My bike tyres are thinner than the scooter. Appreciate a comment.
It'll likely be more to do with the higher weight of the bike compared with the scooter. You may have to push the handlebars a little harder than you're used to. Just don't go overboard, or you'll, you know, go overboard. ;-)
ok so if you wanna turn left, you push on the left so the bike leans left, do you maintain that throughout the whole turn or do you steer into the turn once the bike has leaned enough? or do you steer into the turn to bring the bike back up again once on a straight? am new to this as you can see :-)
3.that person will ask u out or say they love u tomarrow.

Maybe he should be demonstrating in a place that allows high speeds..... like a race track. Call me silly.....but I think that would suffice........don't you?
definately if he was going to do an actual video of fast cornering he should really be somewhere that there are corners meant to be gone around at a high speed....
there is one thing wrong with the description in the video. you DO turn a motorcycle like a bicycle. theyre both 2 wheeled vehicles and work the same. bicycles countersteer just as motorcycles do.
altho i would say you turn them slightly different he is 100 percent correct in stating bicycles countersteer.... sure you dont lean off the bike on a bicylce in the same way you do a motorbike..
but bicycles do countersteer... try rolling on a pushie and turning the handle bars to the left without shifting your bodyweight lol... you will go to the right...
most people dont realise why to counter steer.... i dont know exactly how it works, i just now the gyroscopic effect "pushes" the bike in the opposite direction that you are turning,,,, i have been riding since i was 8(dirtbikes, and i know they are a different animal) and i have always counter steered, and never knew i did it.... lol
Actually gyroscopic effect makes it HARD TO TURN any at all...its called 'rigidity in space' and is the same effect that keeps a spinning top upright. In a bicycle the wheel is so light that you get away with thinking your weight shifting does all the turning. At high speeds the bicycle wheel has more momentum and it feels stiffer. Deliberate Countersteering is need in a motorcycle because the heavier, faster wheel doesnt want to be disturbed.
The technique is used to lean the bike in preparation for a turn (or to tighten a turn). Countersteering works because when the wheel is moved to the left or right, you and the rest of your machine (everything above the wheel patch touching the road) keeps trying to go straight due to MOMENTUM. Countersteer too suddenly and the whole bike will end up on its side, leaned too much to be of use.
100% true, but the laws of inertia ( an object will continue in its current direction unless a force is acted upon it, something like that) are not the only thing that play into counter steering.... like before, the gyroscopic effect plays a huge role. if you take a reciprocating mass and turn it to the left, not only does it twist to the right, it also "pushes" to the right. try this with a bicycle wheel.
dude, you just reiterated exactly what i just said, i quote myself "the gyroscopic effect "pushes" the bike in the opposite direction that you are turning" ok you see what i mean, of course it makes it hard to turn. like i said, it pushes you the wrong way, wouldnt you say that it is hard to corner if a force is pushing you the wrong way????? btw opposite direction means wrong way.
Wow! If you want to learn fast cornering-take a track day with instructors who will teach you one on one! There is alot more to shifting your bodyweight and how it affects the combined center of gravity of you and the bike. Also different reasons for why hanging off the inside of the bike is good both on street and track.
Going into corner, you have to balance between the centrifugal forces which want to sling-shot you out of the curvature and the weight off the bike leaning in the opposite direction.
Practice to balancing those two, and you'll have no problem in fast cornering.
Guys dont you think he taking those corners too slow. OK i agree that i am a learner and only able to take corners at around 80 km/h now but still that too slow i think. Experts can i think take corners at 170 km/h.
I can not get my head around what there is to learn about riding a Motorcycle. Start with a Bicycle (With some effort one can reach speeds to experience counter steering on a bicycle and it wont kill you if you get it wrong) then graduate to a motorcycle.

Guess he doesn't realize countersteering applies to bicycles too.
hairyroadrash 2 years ago 2
I don't know about you, but I don't ride by bicycle upward of 40mph.
Atlantisfan119 2 years ago 2
You don't need to ride upward of 40mph to countersteer on a bicycle or on a motorcycle. I countersteer all the time going around corners well less than 20mph on a bicycle. My Ninja probably weighs in at 430-440 and I still don't have to go 40 mph to countersteer. Countersteering applies to ALL two wheeled single track modes of transportation. Check out "Countersteering 101" or " Counter Steering" by Mordeth13. Better explanations of steering than this crappy ass vid.
hairyroadrash 2 years ago
Hmmm, well I've been cycling for a few years now and don't really need to countersteer unless I'm zipping down a mountain road.
Atlantisfan119 2 years ago
A few years sounds nice, but I'm 30 and have been an avid roadie since I was 10 doing rides at SF, Mt. Tam, Mt. D and the Silverado area. It's true that countersteering is more noticeable during mountain drops at 30+mph and leaning the frame gives results but you can countersteer easily at 10-15mph through any intersection. The last guy I saw trying to turn hard into a turn by steering toward the inside while going greater than 10mph got flung off to the outside and had gravel for breakfast.

The countersteering effect works at speeds from approx. 10mph.
Try pushing the handle bar with one hand and see what happends, push left, go left; push right go right.

SoCalMCRider 2 years ago
Better... However I heard nothing mentioned about acceleration, throttle control and braking. Which are just as important as counter steering. Example, when NOT to. Shoulders as well as elbows need to be used. More description into the obvious is needed.
Trekondus 2 years ago
accelerate after the apex of the corner as you straighten up, do it gradually because you dont want to lowslide, try and keep the throttle even through the corner until you accelerate and dont brake in the corner unless you know what you're doing, slow to your entry speed before you enter the corner however in an emergency you should either brake very gently (or you may lock the wheels or straighten the bike up) or lean further into the corner and counter steer more
LocustsAreSwarming 2 years ago
Actually most of your comments are correct except one. You should roll on the throttle all the way through the turn. This action stabilizes the suspension of the motorcycle. Although steady throttle is good, slight roll on is better if the bike is leaned over further. The more you lean, the need for rolling on the throttle is increased due to the reduced tire circumference, which actually slows the bike down if you do not accelerate slightly. Not hating, just informing.
geritolwhamfan 2 years ago
i'm implementing this technique now, the snow has actually helped me learn alot about stability during cornering because anything out of order and something slides. fast way to learn. thanks.

geritolwhamfan 2 years ago
not sure about the intruder now, not sure i'll have a garage when i move out....know of any bikes that will survive outside?
LocustsAreSwarming 2 years ago
Any bike can survive outside. There are many options for outside storage. There are portable garages, covers and storage systems for every need. You will find them on the internet if you do a search. Never store a motorcycle under a plastic tarp. It traps moisture under it, a bike's worst enemy. Good luck!!!

I am a learner, just gone from a scooter to a motorcycle and can countersteer on my scooter, no problem, but am having trouble on my bike, is it the same? Does it have anything to do with the thickness of the tyres? My bike tyres are thinner than the scooter. Appreciate a comment.
hrsldy62 2 years ago
It'll likely be more to do with the higher weight of the bike compared with the scooter. You may have to push the handlebars a little harder than you're used to. Just don't go overboard, or you'll, you know, go overboard. ;-)
Stay safe.
grayadamson 2 years ago 2
Scooters have smaller wheels, less giro effect that keep the bike straight... so its easier to lean/turn.
dsw163 2 years ago
you counter steer on bicycles too.
Blenkey117 2 years ago 7
adding on sorry i forgot...
if you just push in the direction you want to go ... you will automatically lean that way
neo93536 2 years ago
you dont really need to lean..... on purpose cause that can cause too much lean and if you are a beginner you may not know how to handle it.
but later on to take faster corners you will lean farther and put your knee down. but otherwise great vid.
neo93536 2 years ago
ok so if you wanna turn left, you push on the left so the bike leans left, do you maintain that throughout the whole turn or do you steer into the turn once the bike has leaned enough? or do you steer into the turn to bring the bike back up again once on a straight? am new to this as you can see :-)
plasticsman10 2 years ago
would have been amazing if when he leaned to his right just then, he fell off cause theres no kickstand on that side :P

geritolwhamfan 2 years ago 2
definately if he was going to do an actual video of fast cornering he should really be somewhere that there are corners meant to be gone around at a high speed....
PaRtAyTiMe10 2 years ago
there is one thing wrong with the description in the video. you DO turn a motorcycle like a bicycle. theyre both 2 wheeled vehicles and work the same. bicycles countersteer just as motorcycles do.
socmonki 2 years ago 6
don't talk unless you know what you're talking about.
i bet you don't even ride a motorcycle, idiot.
scr1be 2 years ago
altho i would say you turn them slightly different he is 100 percent correct in stating bicycles countersteer.... sure you dont lean off the bike on a bicylce in the same way you do a motorbike..
but bicycles do countersteer... try rolling on a pushie and turning the handle bars to the left without shifting your bodyweight lol... you will go to the right...
machonacho22 2 years ago 2
You need a full suit with armor for this, not jeans, you will destroy your knees!!
buckwheat40 2 years ago 3
most people dont realise why to counter steer.... i dont know exactly how it works, i just now the gyroscopic effect "pushes" the bike in the opposite direction that you are turning,,,, i have been riding since i was 8(dirtbikes, and i know they are a different animal) and i have always counter steered, and never knew i did it.... lol
but counter steering on a dirtbike is defferent,
beenridinallmylife 2 years ago
Actually gyroscopic effect makes it HARD TO TURN any at all...its called 'rigidity in space' and is the same effect that keeps a spinning top upright. In a bicycle the wheel is so light that you get away with thinking your weight shifting does all the turning. At high speeds the bicycle wheel has more momentum and it feels stiffer. Deliberate Countersteering is need in a motorcycle because the heavier, faster wheel doesnt want to be disturbed.
reggaerocket 2 years ago
The technique is used to lean the bike in preparation for a turn (or to tighten a turn). Countersteering works because when the wheel is moved to the left or right, you and the rest of your machine (everything above the wheel patch touching the road) keeps trying to go straight due to MOMENTUM. Countersteer too suddenly and the whole bike will end up on its side, leaned too much to be of use.
reggaerocket 2 years ago
100% true, but the laws of inertia ( an object will continue in its current direction unless a force is acted upon it, something like that) are not the only thing that play into counter steering.... like before, the gyroscopic effect plays a huge role. if you take a reciprocating mass and turn it to the left, not only does it twist to the right, it also "pushes" to the right. try this with a bicycle wheel.
beenridinallmylife 2 years ago
dude, you just reiterated exactly what i just said, i quote myself "the gyroscopic effect "pushes" the bike in the opposite direction that you are turning" ok you see what i mean, of course it makes it hard to turn. like i said, it pushes you the wrong way, wouldnt you say that it is hard to corner if a force is pushing you the wrong way????? btw opposite direction means wrong way.
beenridinallmylife 2 years ago
Wow! If you want to learn fast cornering-take a track day with instructors who will teach you one on one! There is alot more to shifting your bodyweight and how it affects the combined center of gravity of you and the bike. Also different reasons for why hanging off the inside of the bike is good both on street and track.
1800rider69 2 years ago 3
Don't bother with gyroscophic forces.
Just remember:
Going into corner, you have to balance between the centrifugal forces which want to sling-shot you out of the curvature and the weight off the bike leaning in the opposite direction.
Practice to balancing those two, and you'll have no problem in fast cornering.
Except tire grip, of course.
Quentyn73 3 years ago 3
Guys dont you think he taking those corners too slow. OK i agree that i am a learner and only able to take corners at around 80 km/h now but still that too slow i think. Experts can i think take corners at 170 km/h.
