  • 60 typical dumbed-down Americans think this video SUCKS. Americans are so dumb, they don't even know how to think for themselves anymore.

  • @xlr8up did you watch this it did suck the facts were great but even for a children's show the acting was horrible . i say if you are going to waist money on something like this why not get someone that isn't moving there hands like a total retard or that could put some sort of believability into there roll. also whats with the spitzer spaceship its a telescope not an intergalactic spaceship terrible . i miss Carl Sagan.

  • @sadistic143 Please learn to use proper punctuation, capitalization, grammar, and spelling. Also, you might want to both familiarize yourself with the concept of "frame dragging", predicted by General Relativity... and investigate the value of infrared astronomy. While you were childishly critiquing the acting, the significant points of the film went right over your head. Sagan would certainly be disappointed by your post. And would likely have been delighted by this video.

  • @sbergman27 ha ha ha ha really man i know it gives you a hard on to be a nerd on comments by insulting people .do you think it is shows like this that get people interested in space if you do you are wrong . it's shows like star trek and other great sifi shows and there are many . this it self is a science fiction show and for a sifi show it is bland horribly acted and looks like a joke but there's no joke.

  • @sadistic143 I can understand why you would feel that I'm only out to insult you. I could certainly have been more diplomatic. But working on grammar and spelling, and taking the time to employ proper punctuation and capitalization *would* enhance your credibility. You don't need to prove anything to me. Just think about it.

There is good science presented here, in an entertaining way. This is probably the clearest presentation of the concept of "frame dragging" that I have ever seen.

  • the robot would do her you know..

  • IS there a series, cause I would love to get it for my kids to grow up on!!!

  • "My God, it's full of stars!" Lovely quote. :)

  • "We can't take anotha Hit!" 420

  • Hahaha. Cheesy as hell robot was funny.. not bad

    "Permission to cry?"

  • i learned a few things but it was so gay lol

  • Oh wow, so terrible. Of course, I would have loved the hell outta this as a kid, which makes it brilliant in my book.

  • So bad and cheesy that it was worth watching for 6 and a half minutes. The pizza bit towards the end was funny.

  • well... i only died a little bit inside i aprove

  • My God... It's full of stars!

    I love Arthur C. Clarke!

  • My god, Jim!

  • "There's a reason they're called the 'Evil Zirconians"

They're assholes and they're made of glass??

  • haha! i like the way they escaped from the mine :)

its like when you're in a train and you're walking in the same direction as the train, you're actually moving faster than the train. i realized that when i was like 10 .. but nobody believed me =[

  • wut

  • My 14 year old grandson thought this was so cheesy, but useful, good job folks

  • aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaw that was so adorable... I like that toaster's sense of humor... :)

    Good Video, Sir...

  • Why would a robot want to stop for ice cream? Could it even eat that kind of food?

This was pretty cool! Reminds me a bit of Hitchhikers's Guide to the Galaxy, but better. :)

  • The Bad Acting is Epic

  • How could a robot be THAT STUPID? useless tin-can!!

  • This is so nerdy that it might work as a show.

  • Hehe, that robot is dumb.

  • equal parts awesome and facepalm.

  • :D haha.. nerdy but great! i liked this a lot! =)

  • i liked it. i learned from the theoretical physics part the most.

  • 3:22 should i get out the good plates?

    lol

  • The sequel had better cover the effects of all the time dilation they would experience from hanging out so close to the event horizon!

  • Dammit robot

  • Is this like, one of those new ways to attempt making science more appealing to the general public?

  • I do think she was having all together too much fun there. :)

It is good to see scientists take the time out to do a fun vid and one that also teaches a bit of science.

  • Damn was i glad i was stoned watching this.

I might still have learned something from it.

  • Stay stoned and stupid...dippy!

  • NASA ships suck, no weapons!

  • this is retarded

  • Read the credits dummies. The "girl" was played by Dr. Michelle Thaller, Assistant Director for Science Communication at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center.

When you can earn a Ph.D. in astrophysics, act like Meryl Streep AND look great in an orange jump suit then maybe you can offer your critique on her abilities as a thespian.

In the meantime we should all be grateful that there are billiant people like Michelle out there trying to make science interesting to the general public.

  • @mafarmerga

you made a typo... people are gonna be dicks about that

  • That was fun

  • i wish to be thrown in a black hole... for science!

  • Isn't everything in the galaxy in a closed orbit around the center and ultimately the super massive black hole?

    Anyways: "permission to cry?" lol

  • @omegavalerius That's something I noticed too, but we can't really say without measuring our distance from the center now and again in a 20,000 years. If there was a measurable distance travelled away or towards, then we could say, maybe we were in an growing or decaying orbit /shrug.

  • cool video

  • This was better than half the shows on the SciFi channel.

  • lol, cheese.

  • My own little criticism: Just thought I'd point out that once the "evil whatevers" space ship went past the event horizon and was trapped, you'd no longer be able to see it. The light bouncing off it would be trapped as well, thus rendering it invisible.

Plus the acting, and what everyone else is saying.

Seriously, just stick to interesting and educational commentaries (though I LOVED the black hole animation).

  • Is the black hole a physical thing or is it a "hole"

  • its a physical thing, i guess.

think of it as a mass to dense that even the light coming by cant escape, thus creating a "light hole".

If you look at a black hole all the light from behind and near the black hole get pulled to the black hole.

  • A black hole is basically a super mass. It's mass so dense that everything folds into and around it, even time, light and space. So no, it's not strictly speaking a literal hole... it is the remainder of a dead star. Some theories do speculate that the mass is so dense that it tears a hole in space time, but near as far as I know... that's just speculation.

  • @RomeoCo And even if it does 'tear' a hole in space/time, would it matter? People like to fantasize that we could somehow travel through that hole, but I'm pretty sure we would just be pulled into the mass through gravitational pull and crushed to nothing.

  • @ghostynoises Well given the relationship between gravity and time, the going theory is more along the lines of, time simply stops at the epicenter of a black hole. Though I would argue that it does matter. The idea of traveling through a black hole in our physical forms is so absurd it borderlines on the fantastic. But it still matters, it matters because it's right true and accurate, and by knowing it. we further our understanding of the universe.

  • @RomeoCo Well, in fact, I didn't meant to marginalize the actual phenomenon. Just marginalize people's thoughts that it might be possible to travel 'through' a black hole. I would love to live long enough for humanity to discover a way to observe the phenomenon up close and personal, whether in the flesh, or through a remote device. Either way, the technology that would allow us to ignore the effects of a black hole would probably turn me on lol.

  • @ghostynoises Well it's a paradox, and unless in the future we drastically redefine what is technology I dont think we'll ever travel through a black hole. Simply because all technology is inevitably made of mater, which is still bound by the laws of physics and time.

  • "Should I get out the good plates?" - lol

  • Why the f&@k did they put that robot on the ship!!!

I mean it doesnt know it cant eat pizza, well it doesnt know errr anything LOL

Girl: "Computer, divert power to life support"

    Robot "Why"

Girl: "Because I'll die idiot, manual computer override, eject this fucking retarded trash can"

  • There is no way they could have escaped the black hole at that proximity.

  • i think this would actually be pretty good if it wasn't so horrifically acted. she needs to be like, 50x more exciting

  • Lmao "My gawd, it's full of stars."

  • the bad acting is compensated by the knowledge

  • Animation was good, but the script and acting... come on. There's a reason most scientists should stay in R&D.

  • This is not about some acting. This is for real... ;-)

  • good animation.

  • I hope you got that out of your system.

Super hot pics of the universe are already entertaining enough. We don't need pizza eating robots or space zombies.

  • @claudiaquat Hey there... lets not get too carried away and put a nix on the space zombies, i mean really. :P

  • @adsensus What?? There are friendly space zombies? OK, the friendly space zombies can stay. But the space zombies that suck out your brains or the diodes from your robot --- those gotta go.

  • But... but brains, are so... good. Besides, most people aren't using theirs anyways. No harm, no foul. :)

  • Who are you really? William Zombie Graig the famous space zombie apologist??? [** finding more value in black hole maneuver then previously realized.**] }-: >

  • Cheesy but fun, that escape tactic at the end was the payoff. Bravo!

  • This is the gayest thing since gay came to gay town!

  • "...We can't take another hit!"

Pass that bong this way bitch!

  • They should stick to what they do best and continue to send shit into space. Almost an epic facepalm, it could have been worse.

  • sigh...

Well, the only good thing about it was the robot. Could use with a better development team, and maybe a larger budget though. I can imagine all the work that went into it. But they need to rewrite the script... watch some Battlestar Galactica or something. And then apply scientific knowledge in a clear easy to understand, believable, way.

  • W. T. F.???

  • Lets compare this to Michio Kaku, Universe on History channel, Horizon on BBC, Carl Sagan, Richard Dawkins, Stephen Hawkings ect.

    this shit sucks!

i would rather watch a video related to the people i stated above any day over this

    this is just plain stupid

  • Comment removed

  • What the heck?? Haha!

  • Even Science has its ::facepalms::

    Disasterous.

  • lol " permission to cry"

the stupid robot was pretty entertaining at least.

  • Awesome show.

Why the negative comments? This may be just what is needed to be attractive to young minds. I think it's great.

  • Cute. It could be worse.

  • dumbing down science is not the way to go...

not even "nice try" on this one.

  • hey this makes science and learning fun because er, umm zzzzzzzzz

  • My God... Its full of stars - Said the robot.

  • That was fun.

  • A little nerdy...but very well done nonetheless. :)

  • yes americans are the best arnt they? pffft what a joke of a show

  • as for me 5* fav and share

  • for all of you who are too educated for this, why dont you go back and watch "Cosmos". this vid may seem a little corny but it will draw some subs and more people will learn some science because of it.

  • Where is the starship Enterprise when you need her?

  • Change the robot

Robots with big TV heads that only show a voice bar are a waste of space and ugly

Change the voice from stereo type annoying to something tolerable

    Robots that disobey are dangerous

Who would build a robot with a fetish for pizza and ice cream

This is made by amateurs for 8 year olds

The facts bounce off the kids they just remember the stupidities and learn nothing

PS the US flag will not be the same in the future

I have lived through two changes

    use some flair

  • Kinda silly for a 22 year old like me, but would be good for early grade-schoolers, perhaps. This wasn't bad.. as long as the target audience wasn't adults.

  • Sadly it's too advanced for most adult Americans.

  • 2.18 - 2.21 yey! :D

  • No more vids like this one please...

    Just like farquezy wrote:

"i subscribed for the best of science. not this crap"

  • Sorry but.. this is just embarressing for a science fan like me. Science is cool, this is *dreadful*.

  • great stuff!

  • The Science I like, the knowledge is great, but the scifi.... no. I'd watch syfy or google videos (yep their there) for those shows.

  • this is retarded, please dont post more of this

i subscribed for the best of science. not this crap lol

  • exactly what about this is crap you motherfucker, jesus fucking christ, id like to see you make a super cool and educational cgi video like that, instead of bitching about it , you faget aids redneck fucktard

  • "Should I get out the good plates?" Priceless.

  • hey i had fun

  • weird...

  • "Pretty good use of applied theoretical physics...", yeah next time I'm being chased in space near the center of the galaxy, I'll keep that in mind...

    How about anti-gravity for ATP?

  • i think these kind of shows should be the only thing broadcasting in kids channels.Prepare the kids of today like that, the kids of tomorrow will know more than you do..like...wayy more.

  • Wow, this is....lame..

Lots of facts, but presented in such a corny way. =P

  • Permission to cry.

    Permission denied!

    I couldn't stop laughing X)

  • A couple of things:

    1) Most people think blackholes are like vacuum cleaners, they are not. You can orbit one safely just like you can orbit our sun safely

    2) You would be dead long before you reached the event horizon from tidal forces alone

  • So, so chessy

  • lol

  • when the mine was sucked into the black hole it should have been stretched, viewed from outside.

  • Don't worry people we won't ever see a black hole in our life time we won't even get to the closest star. The chance humanity will ever leave this solar system is slim to none. Even the chance we will ever go to another planet is just as likely, nil.

  • Not with current technology, correct. But who knows what the next 1000 years will bring? Do you think humans 1000 years ago ever imagined us being on the moon?

  • I seriously doubt we have 1000 years. at the rate people are destroying this planet for the greed of a single good life, people are destroying the future for everyone else. Hopefully technology can help us escape before we reach a point of no return.

  • The direction we are taking could potentially be good for space travel if you ask me. Yes, corporate greed is screwing things up for the "little guy" but that doesn't mean that we will stop advancing as a species... only that the control over such projects are going to be in the hands of corporations. If and when they decide that there is profit to be had with something out there... you can bet the farm that we will be out there with renewed vigor.

  • Interestingly, the name of the doctor in this video is an early form of the word "dollar"

  • Robots don't eat icecream or cry, this is scientifically inaccurate.

  • Some interesting facts here. But I'd have preferred it without the frills.

  • What the flying fuck was this? Wow... XD Not bad lol

  • lulz, extremely bad acting, but cool physics

  • you figure that we, if we were to travel all through space, would send out hot women in case they meet other life forms...other life forms would flee from this horse/man crossbreed.

  • Do you get turned on by E.T.? 'Cause, you know, it was a hot chick from its planet.

  • oh yeah....i rubbed many a few out to ET in my younger days....

  • hey enemy mine is a great old sci fi movie with dennis quaid and lou gossett jr. highly recommend it

  • yea i remember that :) nice

  • epic hahe :D

  • Epic???

    That chicks eyebrows are epic....

  • women shouldn't be in space. they should be at home, making dinner.

  • but what if home were in space?

  • then she'd be making pulverized lasagna.

  • @sum1unxpected shouldn't be on the internet, he should be at home, scraping two rocks together.

  • epic

  • Terrible acting! But this was funny anyways :D

  • Well, all the comments on Dr J's ESA videos were wishing that NASA could meet the challenge.

  • An Oscar and a Nobel? Do they allow that?

    :)

  • Better than I expected at the beginning :)

  • A "space odyssey" quote. I like it!

  • Acting is pretty hilarious but she's hot.

  • It was pretty good actually.

  • "my god, it's full of stars" win lol

  • One error in this video:

Though the stars are relatively "dense" you're still unlikely to actually hit one due to the still huge distances between them. This is why galaxies can "collide" with no two stars actually hitting one another. Almost all lines drawn through a galaxy don't intersect with a star.

  • i love the cheese :D

  • Permission to cry? ;_;

  • permission denied!

  • Who makes this ****!, its wonderfull, so bad its almost like real life! .... one word comes to mind, ... more!!!

  • *face palm*... Though it is actually based on science, so thats worth something, right?

  • Wee! Now this is sci-fi edutainment.

  • WTF is this shit -_-

    Well...at least science!

  • that was soooo lame that it was actually hilarious ..

  • This works really well, if you're going to do pop astrology then do it 100%

Although you wouldn't see the black hole unless you passed through the event horizon otherwise all you'd see is a concentration of shimmering light.

    Encore!

  • @narcoleptus

    astronomy :)

  • very cool!

  • Great trivia about black holes in this episode but damn, that NASA Astronaut was PMS-ing all over that poor robot.

  • lol I think this is a show for theoretical physicists during break, not children.

  • Does anyone remember scifi movie "Enemy mine", directed by Wolfgang Petersen?

  • Anyway, it is always good to see scifi based on real science.

  • Lou Gossett Jr. and Dennis Quaid had a baby!!!

  • best movie ever

  • "Don't you know anything you stupid robot? What the hell were you programmed for!?"

    Awesome stuff. Actually learned stuff.

  • you should make this into a series, the acting is so cheesy that it's allot like Dr.Who.... I would watch this.

  • fun yet informative.

  • This was hilarious! Man, I wish to see more of this. Very entertaining. :)

  • She needs cat-ears :3

  • moar ... MOAR !!!

  • i think that was cool :)

  • LOL So strange! XD

  • Somebody give her an oscar!

  • OMG, it's full of stars!....

    Cool...

  • hahahahaha hilarious ^_^

  • More of that please!

  • this is so bad....why did they make this

  • @Xeonophon It's so bad it makes me laugh
