  • @icecreamforcrowhurst

Ernie Isley (of the Isley Brothers who Jimi once played for) comes closer to Jimi Hendrix than anyone. Brutally underrated guitarist who keeps the Hendrix legacy alive.

  • jthegiutarplayer

  • when hendrix arrived in england his name was spelled jimmy

  • @tomthefunky I wouldn't say Cropper was on Hendrix's level as an improviser and soloist, but IMO he was a more mature musician, and a better ensemble player. That being said, I think since Hendrix had to do so much backup work before going solo, when he did get his own band it was like a dam bursting and he could do all the things he hadn't been able to as a sideman. I do agree that Cropper is one of the guys every guitarist should study though. The man is the definition of economy and groove.

  • "some girlfriend."

  • NIGEL!!!

  • And God was in the flesh... Then he was gone

  • Haha its Nigel tufnel right there!

  • The lick Jimi "swiped" was from Jeff Beck's "Rice Pudding'. Jimi used it to end "In From The Storm".

  • Jeff's amp goes to 11.

  • wonderful to hear beck talk about jimi, doctor darren 'ray' redden and i would talk about jimi a lot, jimi was a great inspiration to us both. i think a lot of rays playing style can be attributed too jimi, that loose surreal command over the instrument, jimi played with his teeth where as ray having sensitive teeth[years of ibogaine abuse] learnt to play most of jimi's stuff with his feet, amazing too watch and it left hands free too fondle women. SELF RAISING FLOWERS

  • Hendrix always spoke highly and graciously about other guitarists. On the other hand Beck, Clapton, Page (the plagiarist) and Townsend had a latent repressed resentment of Jimi that they could not always conceal. When Hendrix became THE guitarist and THE act in London in 1966, these British musicians resented it and still do to this day.

When Jimi cut Clapton's head at the London Polytechnic it scarred Eric for life.

  • @DONDIVA1969 go read the tabloids.

  • NIGEL

  • @amin1950 what?

  • He plays with his mouth way better than i play with my hands.

  • @amin1950 wish there were more old dudes like you. I wouldn't fear age as much.

  • IMHO it looks as though Nigel Tufnel & Jeff Beck were separated at birth!

  • @ElixirPolyweb : Wireless - Exactly!

  • Jimi re-defined the way an electric guitar both sonically and technically.

  • @amin1950 killuminati.isgreat.org - find freedom in truth

  • ,, Beck is great,,,, but I wonder where Nigel Tufnell got his 'inspiration' from?

  • @steve1969pierce kept expected him to say,,,,, yeah but 11,, is like 1 louder!

  • @steve1969pierce haha, my thoughts exactly!

  • Before I even clicked this video, I knew people would be arguing over these two. The internet would be a great place if everyone wasn't so predictable.

  • hendrix and beck are two of the best ever! BUT! shawn lane could play circles around both!

  • Comment removed

  • really it is apples and oranges, who cares ~ Jeff has the riffs and knowledge while Jimi just pulled all the stops and had his own style. Both are great , and I would like to hear what Jimi would be playing if he were still here ~

  • And to whom did Jimi look up? Terry Kath.

  • amazing to hear and consider how greats like Beck, Clapton, and Page viewed the infathomable wonder of Hendrix

  • ok the man was just playing with his teeth ...nuff said shut the hell up already..simply the greatest. btw way if you ever want your kid to be the greatest of all time at somthing ..simply name him James(jim) 1) jimi hendrix 2) james brown 3) jim Brown.....

  • @mirzmarco it was on the 7 part documentary- 7 ages of Rock

  • @amin1950

Lol I have no idea why I said that anyway..

  • @amin1950

    Your mums dead. Go cry.

  • Amazing how much Jeff Beck and Nigel Tufnel seem to have been separated at birth.

  • i seen jeff beck twice in the last two years and he is an immense guitarist, one of my fav's! technicaly superb. age or fuck all dont matter when it comes to music. if you enjoy then its all good. people should stop comparing. you dont hear beck or clapton or page comparing themselves to jimi so no one else should be. just enjoy the mastery.....

  • Comparing Hendrix to BEck is stupid. Both are superb, with different styles and approach. It's like saying Monet is better than Van Gogh...an exercise in futility.

  • @xpat73 your wasting your breathe, people are stupid!

  • @amin1950 Props man, keep putting little wimps in their place! As far as i'm concerned i'm going to live forever, just try to prove me wrong!

  • yeah yeah yadda yadda chirp chirp tweet tweet you all sound like a bunch of ignorant crack heads so full of yourselves thinking that your all that and a box of tricks

I swear I think the majority of the human race has gone completely mad

  • yeah,i know you got that from the movie crossroads MrFrontallobotomy.

that is true, however, hendrix changed the way you approach the electric.

of course we a love the bluesman from yesteryears.like muddy and willie

and wolf.hendrix wanted to jam with cream, but clapton got scared when they jammed on killing floor.hendrix destroyed them on guitar.

  • jimi changed the way EVERYBODY plays guitar.

he really taught clapton, beck, page, iommi, may, and the whole world of guitar players.

if it weren't for hendrix, then we would have NEVER heard "HEAVY METAL".

  • @gibsongold1970 heavy metal isn't that great anyways... especially compared the these cats like beck and hendrix.

  • @gibsongold1970 Actually Clapton inspired Hendrix a lot.

  • @gibsongold1970 Yeah, Yeah what ever. MUDDY WATERS INVENTED ELECTRICITY!

  • @MrFrontallobotomy That's right..... Those old blues guys inspired all of these guys. Thank you!

  • @gibsongold1970

Yes, jimi changed the way everybody played, but he was taught and inspired by those cats you mentioned too, especially Beck and Clapton.

  • Jeff beck is so bad ass! So fucking humble and soft spoken!..From some of his newer albums that one with the mechanic hand with grease on front cover? What i see him do with ty from 2007 blues fest trips me out, he has a fucked up cotten mouth dry tone and sounds like the mid range is cranked all the way or something? But he works the fuck out of it..He seem to be the only guitarist from60s that plays up to date,''in his own way! I love buckethead but ever since i saw 07 hes second to buck

  • Jeff is right.

  • I have been looking this bit of interview for years now, saw it on TV a looong time ago. Thanks 4 posting! It was part of a program about Rock History in about 10 episodes, I wish I could find the whole of it.

    Anybody?

  • Hendrix = God

  • @RastafariPoet ... actually God = Hendrix

  • What a legend! We were supposed to see him live a couple months ago but the tickets were sold out! D:

  • comparing favorite guitar players is kin to comparing favorite rocks

or classic cars or megabytes of ram. each speaks to me differently

and still in the same way. there is no comparison to be found. only joy.

so enjoy and shut the fret up with yer who is better than who.

you are, ain't that yer point ?

  • I love hearing great guitar players talking about other great guitar players. It's all about respect. Awesome.

  • @amin1950 you're allowed to say fucking on the internet

  • @amin1950 a senior-citizen INTANET THUGSTA? wow, that might be the lamest thing I've ever come across in my lifetime.

...who the fuck *wants* to be 65? Beck is still rockin HARD at his age, for SURE, but I'm sure even he pines for just a little taste of that youthful exuberance (and teenage sex...can't forget the teenage sex!) that inevitably fades right back into diapers and baby food...getting old may beat the alternative, but it sucks, and anyone who doesn't agree is totally delusional.

  • @ctaboada2 the short bus loads on the left.

  • My god Jeff looks like Nigel Tufnel from Spinal Tap! :DDD

  • @amin1950 3 times??? You know how lucky you are???

  • @amin1950 What are you talking about???

  • @amin1950 Mashed potatoes are Stellar man. Respect!

  • Jeff is so cool man that he admits Jimmy was better than him, look at Ingvee..what a dooche he says Hendrix is noise. I love Jeff

  • Better watch out when you're over 30...too many mashed taters and you'll be consigned for the rest of your surfing career, to a longboard (is there a worse conclusion?). But, hey...us surfin' musos oughtta stick together...ain't too many of us in the water.

  • I saw Beck PLAY with mashed potatoes in 1999 , brilliant !

  • wtf is the obsession with mashed potatoes lol.

    but i do like them.

pp.s try the transcribe audio thing lol its pretty stupid.

  • Right on, amin1950!

I'm only 25 right now myself, but plan to be 65 some day. Beats the alternative! And you're right, mashed potatoes are awesome! lol

  • YEAHHHH (of course i'm only 13. hehe) but seriously, when i'm 65 i still hope to be out there and active and not let my age ruin ANYTHING i wanna do.

ps- mashed potatoes are COOL :D

  • @amin1950: You tell 'em, man! Mashed potatoes are fuckin' great!!!

Also, Jeff Beck is a god-damn legend.

  • @musiccalgary lol.

  • Yeah fuck you mashed potatoes are awesome!

  • I love how he is leaning on that rod 's headlight that he probably built...

  • I just realized when Beck mentioned Jimi saying he stole Beck's riff from "Happenings Ten Years Time Ago", that he's referring to the 2 note intro of "Purple Haze".

  • is he playing with his teeth??

  • HAHAHaa......Saw her on Monday Twas MY lucky Bun Day....you know what I mean ! hah

  • I'm sure Jeff Beck was an inspiration, at least in part, for one of the characters.

  • Machune Gun-the Greatest guitar solo ever!!!

  • So true. Nothing comes close.

  • In a interview in Guitar magazine with Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page, Beck said "He nicked my fuzz box",,haha.

  • gotta love beck&hendrix.2 humble guys who praised each other while each excelled at doing things on guitar others could only dream of.

  • Is this Nigel Tufnel or Jeff Beck ???

  • I was thinking the same thing.

  • And to the poster who said Jimi was always fried. His management and everyone who sucked him dry and pulled him in every direction 360 degrees...well I'll stop there. Jimi was not allowed to be Jimi after he made it BIG.

That'll ruin any great artist. Fortunately Beck paced himself throughout the years, which is why he's still kick ass.

    (read 3rd post first)

  • With Jimi gone Jeff is the best rock guitarist alive today. Just watch his Live at Ronnie Scott's performance. It's all on YouTube. I was fortunate enough to see the same band perform this past summer. For a 65-year old, man, he's better now than 20 years ago. But Jimi is still my all time favorite.

  • Hendrix said in an interview there were 2 people he wanted to jam with in England. Clapton & Jeff Beck. He got to jam with Clapton when he walked on staged during a Cream concert. Eric walked off the stage after his hands shaking. But I wish he had jammed with Beck. As far as I know, he never did. That would be some precious video.

  • I don't have a source, but I've head from a number of people online that Jimi jammed with Beck on a few occasions, at least once with the Jeff Beck Group. According to the posters Beck didn't suffer by comparison.

  • The best thing about a video like this, one great talking about another great, are the comments. Some of us are players, some not. Some of us have somewhat informed opinions, some are idiots. (And no, I don't automatically put myself in the former class) But I'm fairly certain that none of us could begin to touch one of the hairs on either Jeff Beck's or Jimi Hendrix's ass when it comes to what they accomplished as guitarists.

  • Why compare the two?!? Just because they play the same instrument? They're both frigging amazing at the way THEY want(ed) play the guitar. Why not go after all the wanna-bes? I can't tell any of them apart cause they're so plastic.

  • Right on. Its bullshit. Jimi was the best at being Jimi and Jeff is the best at being Jeff. But people ALWAYS have to compare EVERYTHING to show how smart they think they are ;-)

  • @DavePlaysTrombone I hate when people get mad that their favorite is not the best, they always want to say well they are both good! LOL

  • "you tube geekamatic."

    That's hilarious.

  • yeah--well I saw Hendrix when he wasn't bombed. . . and when you do that, then you become the bomb. He was Hiroshima on a guitar. . . and I think Jeff Beck is better equipped to judge that than some you tube geekamatic.

Great is Great. . .Hendrix was great.

Beck was great too--I saw him when Rod Stewart was in his band and they were awesome too.

They're all fucking great. Burn your yardstick.

  • @seanblackpistolero re: Beck was great ... ha! He's still alive and he smokes!

  • If you never saw Hendrix, it's hard to be critical of his "sloppiness", he was fried everytime I saw him. So with that being said, I think he did very well under the circumstances. His recording's vs his live performances, night -n- day. Love and miss him......The only time I saw Beck was with the Yardbirds and was carried off stage, too messed up to play. I don't hold that against him, I got to see Page play Zep stuff, pre-Zep....(I was just a lil' boy) Back in the day...

  • @2hellwitit Jimi was 97% of the time NOT sloppy @ his live performances.. Lets be clear. He did play alot of syncopation and if he did mess up he would catch it w/o you noticing most of the time. Hendrix was the best when it came to playin from the soul and mind. Thats not even a argument..

  • jeff sitting in front of his second passion, classic cars.

  • i love jeff beck, what a cool guy!

  • He made the electric guitar what it is. Not merly an electrified version of a acoustic. He took the time to turn all those colorful boxes on the floor that most people thought of as toys and gadgets and he taught the boxes to sing. Nobody before him had done that as focused as Hendrix. His music on paper might not look like much but the passion he breathed into it and the touch he had made all the magic.

  • that's true but you can't say no one else made them sing, i think beck really made the guitar sing, but i don't want to say one is better than the other they're both great

  • oh, I should have added "no one was doing ALL those things BEFORE him"

And Jeff Beck is a master too ... he sounds better than ever at 65

    The goose bump generator himself

I'm also sure Hendrix would do some totally out there stuff if he would still be alive.

Nothing like the sixties stuff the the copycats play ... still today

  • why can't people on here be more reasonable like you? yea beck doesn't get worse lol he gets better unlike most people

  • whats the colorful boxes on the floor ? you mean effects pedals??

  • And isn't it funny how Hendrix himself thought that Chicago's Terry Kath was a far better guitarist and innovater?

Hendrix was right, by the way. Jimi was amazing, but none of his experimentation ever reached the level of "Free Form Guitar".

  • Jeff Beck kinda looks like Nigel Tufnel from Spinal Tap here.

  • I was thinking the same thing, but isn't it more that NIgel was kinda looking like Jeff Beck...I think when they made spinal tap that's prob what they were going for..

  • Thats because Nigel Tufnel's character was based upon Jeff Beck.

  • I like the part in the movie where Nigel T doesn't even want the interviewer to LOOK at his guitar.

    Too funny.

  • but it was all about the music which seeped into evoryone who saw him, and left an impresson in their brain like some sort of crazy drug, it was then people realized just how huge the boundries for music are, and the one to show them was non other than jimi hendrix

  • the reason why jimi is so highly rated as he is, is because he took what was going on in the music scene and completely shot it into space... people were blown away with him, not just his awsome talent, but his stage presence and the intense engergy that flowed out of his music... he was one with the guitar and it speaked to him, it was soley about the music- sure every once in a while he would roll around on the stage, play with his teath or behind his head, or burn his guitar all togeather-

  • I met Jimi in 1917 in the remote Himilayan village of Shakta-Vit .We enjoyed a friendly smoke, and commented on a passing yak herd.Good times.

  • Ha! I'm still laughing at these people saying Hendrix was overrated...I can't even get mad; it's just hysterical how absurd of a view that is.

  • Simply the biggest explosion in Pop ever.

White-boy blues begun to look a little silly when stood against this man.

SRV comes into this category by default.

Jimi Page was a beautiful player.

Jeff is a cool cat and Hendrix would have warmed to him for sure. Great player too.

Jimi gave every guitarist the idea that they could be unique in their own way, and that was one of his great gifts to music.

Jimi revived the Stratocaster dont forget. Sadly every other Strat player is thenew jimi.

  • I'm sorry, but I can't take seriously ANY serious music fan who calls Jimi Hendrix "overrated".

  • Perhaps you don't even know why everybody refers him as the best guitar player ever. Perhaps you call him n1 because of the others.

  • Is there anything more amazing (and utterly ridiculous and completely unnecessary) than playing the guitar with your teeth?

  • Yes, but guitarists were doing that since the 20s.

  • its entertainment

  • lets play a game;

1.pick the 10 greatest guitar players ever in your opinion

    2. ask all of them if hendrix was "overrated in terms of his playing ability"

    3. NONE OF THEM will agree with you. GUARANTEED

  • well, overrated is not the word. Overrated are, IMHO, those hairband guitarrists shredding all the way like they are doing aerobics without any musical sense.

Jimi, doesn't matter who likes his music or not, has influenced almost every corner of modern guitar music, that means, any guitar hero you can choose now-a-days, has 'something' from Jimi.

If he gets overrated through the media that way (money rulez!), well... his music and guitar playing has nothing to do with it.

  • Gee whiz the flack I'm taking for making a comment that Jimi is over rated and tiring to the ear, so what?

The ones who love Jimi will continue to do so, have at it. I still feel Jimi is OVER RATED! and over time, gets tiring to listen to. So if you get angry because people don't say what you want to hear? Big Babies. Remember, people dislike Jesus too. You're going to kill them over it?

Miles wrote a song called, "So What", that's my answer.

  • bender.

  • yeah, that's a healthy mentality.....

seriously. Too many people like you try to go against the grain and say "you know what, because all of you like X, I actively choose to dislike X!" It's almost like you're an adolescent...

seriously, overrated in what respect? You don't think he's influenced most of the famous guitarists today directly or more likely indirectly? Jimi Hendrix is one of the most influential guitarists of all time, and therefore I say he is NOT overrated.

  • Say what you want, but only Hendrix was able to play clean with incredible tone, and heavy with crazy feedback and distortion. As for sharp glass in the ear tone, how about Little Wing? You think that it was sloppy? Jeff Beck and everybody form London copied the blues and soul from the US. Hendrix played with, and for, the people who often where imitated by folks like Jeff Beck.

  • jjaaccoo, if you don't like his music, that's fine. There are guitar greats who aren't my cup of tea either. BUT, you can't deny the talent. Jeff Beck didn't, Eric Clapton didn't the Beatles didn't Santana didn't, the Who didn't, and on and on...

  • jjaaccoo, you are truly the world's biggest idiot! to make such a moronic statement about Jimi Hendrix!! May you get bloody diarrhea for the next 60 years or so!!!

  • jjaaccoo-wow what a ridiculous statement.

  • you are over rated also, tiring to the brain

  • your life is overrated.

  • yeh im glad he is overrated because else i never would hear his music

  • NIGEL TUFNEL

  • Good call, hahaa. I've got a friend who I swear looks exactly like Nigel, speaks the same as him as well.. just like Jeff here.

  • Did Hendrix played with Beck together? 'cause Hendrix played with Clapton and smoked him but, you can't say he smoked Beck, if they didn't played together at all LOL.

  • Hendrix & Clapton were big fans of eachother, but when Clapton saw Hendrix play one of his little acid trip influences, he said he needed to learn how to play again cos Hendrix was the master. So yeah,I guess u could say that. Hendrix will always be number 1 however fast these neo-classical wannabe douches can play, they will never achieve what Hendrix had. He was inimitable.

  • jimi has so much soul!!! : )

  • hendrix plays better with his teeth than i do when i play guitar normally :P

  • have you heard him play with his teeth its very good.

  • hahahahahahah...;-)

  • I think he bought that car in Half Moon Bay

  • Hendrix SMOKED Jeff Beck too, There is nobody out there that played guitar like Hendrix He was the best PERIOD.

  • Comment removed

  • Its very hard for young guitarists today to truly grasp the impact Hendrix had back then.Beck isn't kidding.I was around 12 years old when "Are you Experienced" hit "like a bomb".I honsestly believe that Jimi propelled Beck into an area of rare invention he may not have otherwise realized.Beck (to me)carries the mantle of the greatest rock guitarist ever(Hendrix)and has piloted Jimi's spaceship where he himself may have eventually taken it.

  • I honestly don't think Jimmy Hendrix had much to do with Jeff Beck's domination of being the most inovative guitarist ever.Beck was a monster before Hendricks ever showed up.The "bomb" to me is that Hendicks was like a side show freak.Jeff Beck is and always was on his own path.

  • Hendricks?

  • Hey nuendo2496 you are way out of order calling Jimi a side show freak...........Jeff is a great player but Jimi (and it is Hendrix not Hendicks or Hendricks) was a creative genius. Admittedly early on Jimi did turn on the theatrics, but he soon outgrew that phase. Just listen to Machine Gun from the Fillmore and you will soon realise what greatness, virtuosit and true genius is all about. Jimi was more than just an amazing guitar player-he was a messenger- RIP Jimi, rock on Jeff..

  • nuendo2496 - I laughed at your side show freak comment thinking you were another Jonas Brothers fanatic. Then I saw how old are. After that I just felt sorry for you.

  • Have Jonas Brothers covered Hendrix

  • Do you feel sorry for Jeff Beck because he is 65 years old?......Didn't think so.

  • DEFINITELY! 65 sucks...

  • @nuendo2496 Did you even listen to the interview?

  • Yes, All the greats praise one another. Jeff is the all time greatest.

  • @nuendo2496 Then you know that with their similar genres, time period and jamming together, were therefore influenced and inspired by one another?

As for being the greatest, I doubt that's what Jeff or Jimi were trying to accomplish. They just wanted to play amazing music.

  • I actually like Jimi. Just love Jeff. Yes it's not a compitition.Peace.

  • @nuendo2496 Agreed.

    Peace.

  • Jimi is the greatest, not Jeff.

  • Jeff is awesome.
