Correct, she's not singing tabla "bols," she is using Konnakol. What she is singing does not at all indicate finger placement or usage. It is only for communicating rhythms.
It's not tabla bols. These bols are actually used in South Indian percussion, with percussion instruments like the mridangam, ghatam, kanjira, etc. Actually the introduction does mention that it is from South India.
Not tabla bols, but bols used in South Indian percussion, with instruments like the mridangam, ghatam and kanjira. The tabla is mainly used in North Indian music.
I thought konnokol was just a rhythmic stuff, not the tabla strokes. From wikipedia : "Konnakol should not be confused with the practice in Hindustani music (the classical music of northern India) of speaking tabla "bols", which indicate the finger placement to be used by a percussionist."
yeah few people know about this form of percussion, easily one of the most complex in the world.
Each of those enunciations you hear actually corresponds to different types of sounds one can get by beating either of two drums in the tabla, depending on which drum, finger, angle, placement on head, etc...you get the point.
and the vocalizations are actually used to teach and annotate, and even showcase at concerts. Just cool to see other people of the world catch on.
representing south india!! yeah few people know of indian percussion besides the overused tabla backbeat you'd hear on some underground techno mix (e.g. thievery corporation)
easily the most complex form of percussion. all the different enunciations from her mouth symbolize different strokes one can use in hitting a tabla, depending on the drum (of which there are two),finger, angle, placement on the head, etc...
there is a dvd available , google it .... otherwise south india is a good bet or look if there are any south indian percussionists or vocalists in your area
There is going to be a live performance of Guru Karaikkudi Mani, a mridangam maestro equally at ease in phonetic percussion (konnakkol) in NewJersy on Sep 2nd. visit layamani dot com for details. I am attending. If possible make a video and upload it.
wow. i absolutely love this singing ability. i put it next to throat singing and the tri chord of buddhist monks. thank you very very much for that piece. hard to find the right word to express my blown away feeling.
Very cool, reminds me of when I was a little kid making up my own language with my brother. The lady is very pretty too. Is this the same or related to "Skat"?
I've been to a workshop with Lori and Glen - she's also a good teacher, and it IS possible to learn this stuff! not at this speed though ;-) but it's soooo fun to do!
Is there a CD I can purchase of this incredible music?
