Respect is universal. You dont have to like someone to respect them.
So there were signs of change in metal scene and I think there really are no other musical genres that is as international as metal is. "Global Metal" is awesome video. It's not simply informative about metal music in other countries but it have anthropological depth to it too. Sam Dunn is an anthropologist so he have implied his profession on music he love. More power to him and it was very inspiring.
I am an Asian American who grew up in U.S. and always have been a huge metal fan. And "Global Metal" is basically testimony of my victory after all these years, living in the States as a royal Asian metal fan. But I remember even about ten years ago, when ever I read metal magazines, I noticed lots of mails were coming from countries in Middle East and Far East as well as South East Asia. And I even read one mail who said he is more interested about metal bands from non-Western. countries.
@neuroelite In 1994 Ulver were already doing a form of folk influenced black metal. That was at the same time as Opeth were recording Orchid....(their first album).
I think Steven Wilson`s work on BWP and Deliverance and Damnation was important for helping certain forms of metal break more, but they existed prior to Steven Wilson`s effect on Opeth, and PT`s venture into more metal territory.
man geez what's with classifying everything like that or saying this is metal this is not bla bla bla, metal ain't about that type of shit, I agree it's heavy so it's metal.
I love all those bands and im not racists redneck lmao or do I know any that like that either, maybe some places but I seriously doubt all their fans r like that
in my opinion the truest metal is folk metal. because you must take the folk traditional style of music from your ancestors and then envision this clad in a modern metal casing. like viking metal to the scands, sepultera to brazil, korpiklaani to the sumi, ritual day to the chinese, mael mordha to the gaelic scots, fuck... the list goes on just give me a country and ill name a folk metal act or atleast one thats influenced by the local traditional music. any country
Who cares if it's metal enough or not. If you like it, you listen to it. Always the same quarrels on YouTube: Who's more metal, who's the best drummer, who's the best guitarist. Who cares..
the only real difference is the true metal and the corrupted hollow cultureless counterpart being acts like slipknot, dragon force, lamb of god, just the layman's metal you know. its souless, doesnt mean the musicians suck or arnt trying but they just dont have the soul...like korpiklaani or slayer or tyr, or darkthrone. that stuff just has the magic you know. make's you go wow...this song sounds different and no angsty lyics
Slipknot sucks ass and is not metal, lamb of god is dangerously close to nu metal sounding and pantera IS metal defintley. I can see why Sam isn't a fan tho. Pantera isn't really an exstension of traditional metal the way bands like metallica and slayer are. Plus they have an extremeley racist redneck following
I dont see what everyone is arguing about. Slipknot, LOG, Pantera, they're ALL metal. Doesnt matter about how good they are. If the music is heavy enough, its metal.
I thought the movie was awesome to help unite us as a "global tribe" but I'm just reading a bunch of pussies bitch about who like the cooler metal bands.
no worries. that american-based faggotry (blabbermouth started it, imo) has never been an actual part of anything, these dolts are only a fraction of us. they're loud yes but do not mean a thing.
look he can still like Pantera, but you don't have to be a fanboy to like a band. I mean he can respect Pantera, but maybe hasn't listen to it so much. Stop complaining
well put. Pantera still reigns in their own department, but they couldnt write a good deathmetal track worth anything. Then again, no deathmetal band could write a good pantera track no matter how hard they try. point? theres no masters of everything, only kings of their own field. and before fanbois start to moan, im a panterafan aswell - proud owner of their whole back-catalogue on cd's and videos up from VHS era.
i can relate to that. like my religion is christianity and i love heavy metal, and when i face metal that has involve violence, sex, war, blood,anti-christ... you know that stuff doesnt really effect me, like i wear a metallica or a megadeth t-shirt and all it has is megadeths first album cover, its just a skull and my mom freaks out, or a ride the lightning t-shirt or master of puppet, my mom freak out.
Pantera and the metal genre they represent (groove) are not popular with most metalheads. Most metalheads would lump Pantera in with Korn and Slipknot as poser bands. I dont, but I dont like Pantera that much either.
You're shitting me,right?Jonathan Davis from korn said himself, after he watched the video for "Mouth For War",he decided then what kind of music he was going to play.I'm sure glad I'm not most metalheads, then.
have you ever tried listening to pantera? There one of the most popular metal bands ever and pretty much saved metal in the 90s when everybody else soldout or went shithouse. Listen to A new level, Mouth for war, Slaughter, Rise or Im broken all sick songs!
@zepvhrule Hmm not dissing Pantera but you have to consider the the 90's Florida, Swedish Death Metal and Melodic Death Metal scene as well as the 90's Norwegian Black Metal scene all helped shape modern Metal.
@zepvhrule I wouldn't say that Pantera saved metal. Metal in the 90's transformed somewhat and became varied. Personally, I think Pantera is overrated honestly and to think Pantera saved metal sounds awfully fanboyish.
@Totemhorn Being a pretty diehard Pantera fan, I kinda agree with this. What did Pantera save metal from? Grunge? Grunge killed itself (NO PUN INTENDED), and it will always be the die hard metal fans that save metal.
people dont like lamb of god for a few reasons. one, the vocals. most people think the vocals dont sound cool. second, they have a metalcore feel to them that not many traditional fans can find interesting. and third, i have heard a lot of people say that they hate the fact that l.o.g. think they are pantera. just a few reasons why. i have nothing against them, but thats just what i've heard. hope this helps. =)
As much as I liked Global Metal, I gotta point out that Sam Dunn made a major mistake: Iron Maiden was not the first major metal band to play in India. Sepultura had done a 3-city tour in October of 2007 (which makes them the first major band to ever play in that country), four months before Iron Maiden played in India for the first time. Yeah, I couldn't be less interested in Lamb of God. It's a dumb thing to say for a metal fan that one band is the best. If anything, metalheads should know to respect that people have differing musical tastes. For my money I like the more melodic side of metal, like power and progressive, classic metal and some of the more melodic death metal.
Awesome interview though, and an awesome documentary.
With any luck we can hope George was paid to say that, hell before this show he was on Much Music witch for the more over is a pop/rap music video station here in Canada.
I know, as well as Much More Music. With VJ's though there paid to say stuff, so who knows if or what there true opinions are. Although George does tend to like a variaty of music.
George Stroumboulopoulos clearly has cruddy taste in Metal. Lamb of God is not the best metal band in the world today. Man... even if you like that lame nu metal band do you seriously think they're THE best? Wow...
maybe they meant the best metal band that regular people actually know about, the REAL best bands right now are Opeth, Dream Theater, Dark Tranquility, dimmu borgir, and Nevermore.
ummbtw just pointing out LAMB OF GOD isnt nu-metal:S try thrash and metalcore/death
and LAMB OF GOD i think hes saying is the frontrunner, people who arent fans of lamb of god have heard lamb of god,but fans of lamb of god dont even noe other great bands so its kinda like lamb of god is THE band of the 3rd metal generation
i love how george said that the most metal u'll ever hear and they put on more then words, i just shit my pants laughing, cant wait to see this movie, and i love how they showed the similarities with brazilian metal and indonesian metal, \m/
When George said "Maybe the best metal band in the world today" and they started playing "Laid to Rest" the only two words going through my mind were "F*CK YEAH!!!!!!"
id have to say, the main bands that started metal would be.
Iron Maiden
Ozzy Osbourne(black sabath)
And Judas Priest.
as for slayer, the reason slayer is also really awsome, is because they were one of the 1st Thrash metal bands, and were greatyl heavy in the 80s, and are still heavy to this day. slayer is teh bomb!
I love what he said about Iron Maiden in India, if he had just seen what went on here in COSTA RICA when maiden came! Biggest concert EVER in costa rica, people waiting outside the stadium 7 days before the concert. So awesome
indonesia :D

George Stroumboulopoulos clearly has cruddy taste in Metal. Lamb of God is not the best metal band in the world today. Man... even if you like that lame nu metal band do you seriously think they're THE best? Wow...
funkycougar 3 years ago
Also Pantera! Sheesh.
funkycougar 3 years ago
maybe they meant the best metal band that regular people actually know about, the REAL best bands right now are Opeth, Dream Theater, Dark Tranquility, dimmu borgir, and Nevermore.
luke666808g 3 years ago
Yes, I mostly agree. Which is as best as you really get amongst metal fans I'd say.
funkycougar 3 years ago
Add Decrepit Birth and Brain Drill to that list. Other than that... I'd pretty much agree with you.

ummbtw just pointing out LAMB OF GOD isnt nu-metal:S try thrash and metalcore/death
and LAMB OF GOD i think hes saying is the frontrunner, people who arent fans of lamb of god have heard lamb of god,but fans of lamb of god dont even noe other great bands so its kinda like lamb of god is THE band of the 3rd metal generation

When George said "Maybe the best metal band in the world today" and they started playing "Laid to Rest" the only two words going through my mind were "F*CK YEAH!!!!!!"
MrSpitz99 3 years ago
also, i have this dvd, and i was hoping they would go to finland. Cob, Inflames, Nightwish, are all from there, well to my knowledge they are. =P
Dillon0Moore 3 years ago
id have to say, the main bands that started metal would be.
Iron Maiden
Ozzy Osbourne(black sabath)
And Judas Priest.
as for slayer, the reason slayer is also really awsome, is because they were one of the 1st Thrash metal bands, and were greatyl heavy in the 80s, and are still heavy to this day. slayer is teh bomb!
Dillon0Moore 3 years ago
add metallica to that list. in fact no other band has influenced metal so greatly since metallica, commericial and underground wise.

I think it's awesome how he doesn't feel obligated to like Pantera. This coming from someone who does.
TimelyJew 3 years ago 2
went to see it at the Forum in Montreal yesterday, good movie even though I didn't really learn anything.
vene777 3 years ago

TwilightBinder 3 years ago
if that was possible i would probably do it. lmfao can u imagine?!
can't wait to see this movie. hope it's as good, if not better, than Metal: A Headbanger's Journey
(P.S. George should not attempt to sound like Phil Anselmo...no one can match that....)
guydudemanperson 3 years ago
he doesn't like pantera??? O.O
Strike666 3 years ago
George thinks Lamb of God is one of the best metal bands today? :/
Wow.
On the positive side though, Sam Dunn doesn't like Pantera :D, right on.

I love what he said about Iron Maiden in India, if he had just seen what went on here in COSTA RICA when maiden came! Biggest concert EVER in costa rica, people waiting outside the stadium 7 days before the concert. So awesome
fullmatiz 3 years ago
