(continued) Germany's major failing in World War Two was that they tried to fight it as a series of campaigns meant to knock out various opposing nations in relatively brief, violent campaigns. Beyond a vague idea of ruling Europe (and maybe the rest of the world), Germany never developed a grand strategy meant for prolonged, sustained warfare over many years with a concerted goal of bringing the war to an end by the complete annihilation of not only the enemy's ability, but also will, to fight.
Actually, the Dunkirk evacuation succeeded because Hitler let Goring have the honor of "destroying" the B.E.F. The Royal Navy, Royal Air Force, and the people of the United Kingdom came and pulled more than 385,000 (mostly) British, French, Canadian, Dutch, and Belgian troops out. Also, the Luftwaffe, as the cartoon says, was not built for sustained aerial warfare, but to support ground troops.
Germany's major failing in WWII was not on the tactical level. (more)
Germany lost because it mixed politics with military never a good plan. When political pressure is put on a general it causes bad things to happen for example when FDR forced Ike to give oil supplies to Monty instead of Patton for Market Garden. Horrible failure of course one of the many examples of Politics mixing with military.
Eh, no? The war began cause Hitler and his NSDAP had control over the army, they swore to follow him wherever he sends him. And Nazi Germany lost cause it had to many frontlines. Oil and war supplies became scarce and the Nazis lost the control over the sky. While cities were bombed in germany, the Allied invaded in the Normandy and the german main force frozen to death in the east.
@MeRedZack yeah you are right I was just trying to make a point about how politics and military are a bad mix but yes everything you said contributed to the Nazi defeat, or rather destruction.
This makes Dunkirk look better then it really was. Dunkirk was a crushing defeat for the British. The British who were retreating across the channel were bombed by the Luftwaffe
I am not sure this was meant to be history. It seems like its a news report. While its not complete, I would say it is a very quick and dirty 10min recap of events from 1940 to 1941.
This is wrong. The German Army did not pound through the Maginot Line, they went through Belgium (which had a fortress of it's own that was taken by German Commandos), and completely bypassed the Maginot Line all together. Actually German forces that were send against the line faced fierce resistance and a lightening strike against them would have been near impossible.
The Maginot line was simply gone around. It was't possible to extend it into other countries and extending all the way around France was simply not practical. The French General Staff forgot or refused to believe that air power was going to be the biggest factor in the coming war. Remember the Billy Mitchell court martial because he kept proving that aircraft could sink battleships and that no fixed fortification was impregnable.
The strongest part of the Maginot Line was never breached. If it had been full strength all the way to the Atlantic, it would have been quite effective.
Actually, the Mescherschmitz were superior to the Spitfires in most catagories. It is simply that Britain was on the outer fringe of the German planes range. If the Germans had inflight refueling, they'd have won.
The hand that press the swastika on Crete, I know were used in the film series "Why did we fight?", A documentary in seven parts of the Second World War.
Britain with its undisputed control of the seas was supposed to take care of sea power. Well it did... France, with its great army was supposed to take care of land warfare. Well, youve kinda got me there. And america was supposed to take care of.. oh yes! Air power! That appears to be missing...
@demerit56 No, in 1939 the US was "neutral", with a bias for Britain, but there was a brown shirt movement in MYC and any city w/ a German or Italian population, and high profile Fascist admirerslike Henry Ford and Charles Lindberg. America was happy to get back to work and sell stuff to the combatants.
In 1939 the American armed forces were a joke, a bad joke. No manpower, no training, and out of date equipment. The US became the arsenal of democracy, when it decided it had to take a role.
The only reason Britain was able to evacuate from Dunkirk was because Hitler was so overconfident he only sent his air to annihilate the British. If he sent his ground with his air he could have completely destroyed the British. The British still did lose a lot of ships though. The Nazis would have easily won WWII if Hitler wasn't in charge. He ordered his generals to make so many stupid moves.
@cheezycrackers221 They would gain control of Britain but they would have never have taken it, there would still be fighting now. The only way to beat the British and The Americans is to kill us all.
Also, the German air drop on Crete was spectacularly mismanaged. Despite having the element of surprise, the Fallschirmjager performed poorly and failed to achieve most of their goals. This is one of the reasons they were never air dropped in any significant numbers for the remainder of the war.
The Maginot Line actually could have been much more effective, had the Belgian government not been so completely irrational. Their threat to actively ally with Germany in the event of a French expansion of the line along their border would have allowed the French and British to redraw their defensive plans, perhaps slowing or even stopping the German invasion.
This film does contain inaccuracies. After the war, when the German archives were siezed and writers had leisure to do RESEARCH, the Fall of France became better understood.
Even so, the breathtaking rapidity of the breakthrough at Sedan was possible only because the French artillery positions above the Meuse were destroyed by Stukas on Monday, May 13 1940 (see Manchester, "The Last Lion") and because the Luftwaffe prevented the RAF and l'Armee de l'Air from destroying the crossings.
This is grossly inaccurate. The Maginot Line was totally by-passed by the Nazi forces, because it only extended as far as the Ardennes Forest, and that is where the main thrust of their offensive was against French and British expeditionary forces. The Maginot Line fell only after Paris was occupied and the French were all but defeated. The Maginot Line was a relic of outmoded military tactics before it was even built, and they were foolish to rely upon it.
@suspicious35 This wAS made during the war, I think they know whats accurate as they got the latest news. Information can come out wrong creating different information along the way.
@FatNature That's a pretty big thing get wrong. The whole dynamic of the French Campaign was centered around the German breakthrough at the Ardene and there charge though, (pardon my spelling) Sedan. it's like talking about the War between the States and not mentioning Antietam and crediting Union victory with widespread use of Gatling guns.

germany was successful mainly because it concentrated its forces, not because they had more
airpower is important, although its not so much about how many planes they had, its about how they used them

What history book is this from?! The RAF suffered their heaviest casualties ever over Dunkirk. Also the bit about Norway is rubbish - the Royal Navy succeeded in destroying the cream of the Kriegsmarine's surface units which would have far-reaching consequences.
Britian went to war to prevent Germany from exerting power over eastern europe. In the end we had a 50 year cold war with a worldwide communist threat, and The British Empire faded away. now England is a 3rd rate power and Germany is an economic powerhouse. Also, Social Liberalism is a giant failure..the west is done
@nick0051 This is from "Victory Through Air Power", a 1943 WWII propaganda film made by Walt Disney. I encourage you to read the background about this in Wikipedia. Fascinating!
It must be propaganda video because it does not mention that German Bf-109s did not have enough fuel to dogfight over Britain. To have fuel to go to Britain and go back to France, Bf-109s could fight over the Island for 30 minutes, and no more than 10 minutes over London.

"The great french are army", "The french won WWI in the trenches..."
This is truely propaganda. No one thinks, that the french army was good at this time, even the americans.
Hitler didn´t attack, cause he hoped for a peace treaty with England. No Brits would have seen there home again for a long time, if he didn´t make this military mistake.
@TXTwilight The French did have more tanks and better tanks. What they did not have was: Radio in their tanks---which is what helped the German's outmanuever them.
I was talking about WWI not II, but anyway, the communications give the whermacht a huge advantage about their enemys. The french also got more airplanes, but they were outdated.
Radio in Tanks is also a key disadvantage. It proves to be both a blessing and a curse, especially in Ambush campaigns. For instance, radio helps the tanks to successfully co-ordinate the ambush mission, which often takes place in the pitch darkness of the night; but can easily lead to detection by the enemy radio, since the detection of a radio frequency that is, say, in German or is not friendly is a good enough hunch that there are Nazis out there conducting a sneak-atttack.
Britain with it's undisputed control of the seas was supposed to take care of sea warfare. (well, it did...) and France with it's great army, of land warfare.(well, it did) oh yeah. One more thing America. Where the hell were you with your air power?
This is from Victory Through Air Power. It can be found on Youtube. Also, thank you for posting this, I saw it years ago, and it was amazing and still is when I first saw it. Thank you.
This is exactly the type of propaganda we need to cultivate more interest in history.
Beleive it or not, this one video of 8:03 minutes has, although not detailed, taught us what maybe 4 pages could cover. It comes to show that history is not a boring subject if you learn it via pictures and other learning aides. In this case, a propoganda video.
@CoolAdi619 yeah the problem with this video being used to learn history is that it`s that its propaganda. it isn`t intended to show the truth but to convince that the enemy of the united states( whoever it is) is evil. i'm not saying that hitler wasn't, but merely affirming that to get to the truth of the past one needs to be more objective and not trust blindly in the view of the goberment which clearly never is.
@juli12341234 I don't agree.....this video is really supporting Hitler's strategy of Blitkrieg.....y isn't it showing the victories of the allies.....but the airpower conquests of the allies by the Nazis.....
If by superior you mean having more airplanes and war machines, yes. However, their numerical superiority didn't help them even in the Battle of Britian. Hitler, because of an accidental bombing, switched from bombing air bases to cities. His hatred was so bad that he stopped trying to win (he almost had wiped out the RAF until the switch) to simply trying to punish the British. One more thing that proves he was not a genius.
The LAST thing Hitler could claim was genius. He refused to listen to his generals even tho THEY were the one responsible for his early victories. He also even in his early "accomplishments" used methods that would NOT be allowed in a free country. He was also virulently Anti-Semitic, which all by itself is nonsense, even recognizing that it was prevalent in that time period. He went way too far in his hatred. Anyone wih as much hatred as he had in him could NOT be considered a genius
@kropla56 you are the most fucking retarded piece of shit i have ever heard... wtf is wrong with you in the 1st place?? go revise your history before making retard comments!! u nazi shit
"Victory Through Air Power is a 1942 non-fiction book by Alexander P. de Seversky. It was made into a 1943 Walt Disney animated feature film of the same name."--Wikipepia This entire film is posted on YouTube, simply type in "Victory Through Air Power"
soooo not true. the luftwaffe was the strongest. go to google. type in : list of ww2 fighter aces wiki . then scroll up and down the list and see for yourself. truly a propaganda.
actually the people of crete fought the nazis with agricultural tools and suprasingly the greeks hold out the germans long enough so the communists and the allies could get their armies ready
@Vsmovies100 The German air force was mainly designed to attack ground troops and planes. The British planes had more guns on their planes and were designed only for war in the air.
Germany Start losing the War after Dunkirk. It was Then and their Germany should have Attack England. and Control her Trade line, and the War would have being Over before it even Warmed up. Canada would back off after the Fall of England & France. Germany would take Spain with out any trouble. and Portugal. should that would Leave Russia, Ireland, Sweden to fall next..
Ireland is what Hitler wanted to launch his V2 Rockets @ US, Japan would have Asia and share Russia with Germany.
LOL FRENCH FOOLS forgot to build the Wall around BELGIUM aswell SO Germany Knew that so they went into Belgium and Attack the French from Behind.. RIGHT up the Ass.. That what i call a Wall Fail.
This is a Disney film, Victory Through Air Power based on the book of the same name. The style of the animation was later copied for segments of the film "The Rocketeer.
@hawkcrie that everyone say even sweden how cool they are and never been fighting with Soviet union not mentioning this that sweden fuckin attacked poland and stole many wortheless things our national in XVII century together with fuckin germans soviets and czechs.
@kropla56 I thought you were just high the first time, but now that you've done it again... Go to rehab dude, no one needs crack addicts rambling in the comments. If you're going to ramble, at least ramble in a logical way so I can respond. Your comments makes no sense.
@kropla56 Soviet were not Communist either just said they were. Can't have a state and be Communist is a contradiction.
But if memory serves me right they were not allies, they signed a non-aggression pact. The German's broke that pact and what do the Soviets do? Send millions to battle. Have millions die to keep the Nazi's from taking over. The Soviet's invaded, yes. Did they help after? Yes.
They won't because the Soviet's were their allies. 23 million of us died, show some damn respect
@kropla56 Left Communist? Well yeah you have to be left to be a Communists its how things work.
Well actually Stalin was in power longer, and with a higher population. So people in the Gulag would have more deaths.
Kill nothing? We kill alot are you kidding? We had 65% of the German active military invade us. We had 23 million die cause of that. You complain of your 5 million dead, we had more civilian's die then you had in total die. Not to mention we actually fought the German's off.
During World War II, Frank Capra and Theodore "Dr. Seuss" Geisel made films like these, but I don't know if either man had anything to do with this one. It's possible, though.
impressive - very succinct description of Blitzkrieg - considering it was made 24 months after the invasion of France and in the middle of a war its surprisingly candid and accurate. Very high quality animation.
@gopconservative78 France fought hard before surrendering. They surrendered because they were in no condition to fight. Kinda like when the Americans surrendered the Philippines to the Japanese because they were also in no condition to fight. Don't tell me Americans are sissies too.
I think it was designed by British film makers to tell the Americans why they should join them in fighting the Nazis.
The Yanks were not sure about joining the Brits at he time a few months before Pearl Harbour. The US eventfully went to war against Nazi Germany 4 days after Pearl Harbour.
The film also been telling the US if Britain falls then the US would be next.
The animation is so well-drawn and eye-catching; it's a pity the information is flawed. I would appreciate unbiased documentaries on war history done in a cinematic animated style like this. It would be excellent for student history classes.
france with its ''great army '':)) bullshit capitalist propaganda so ass licking :-j in my opinion in a democratic state kids should be allowed to have their own Opinions about these historical matters ,even if there is a risk that they would sympathise with commies or facists ...
It is from a Disney animated feature produced during WW II called "Air Power" that justified bombing civilian targets to end the war....check wikipedia for details

@TXTwilight The French did have more tanks and better tanks. What they did not have was: Radio in their tanks---which is what helped the German's outmanuever them.
Hypatia1951 11 months ago
@Hypatia1951
I was talking about WWI not II, but anyway, the communications give the whermacht a huge advantage about their enemys. The french also got more airplanes, but they were outdated.
TXTwilight 11 months ago
@Hypatia1951
CoolAdi619 11 months ago
@TXTwilight
hitler did not attack because he knew america would enter the war just like in WWI.
in fact he knew that was inevitably going to happen which is why before the war he signed a pact with Japan which back then had a strong navy.
orangedac 11 months ago
Britain with it's undisputed control of the seas was supposed to take care of sea warfare. (well, it did...) and France with it's great army, of land warfare.(well, it did) oh yeah. One more thing America. Where the hell were you with your air power?

This is exactly the type of propaganda we need to cultivate more interest in history.
Beleive it or not, this one video of 8:03 minutes has, although not detailed, taught us what maybe 4 pages could cover. It comes to show that history is not a boring subject if you learn it via pictures and other learning aides. In this case, a propoganda video.

fullfist 5 months ago 22
@CoolAdi619 yeah the problem with this video being used to learn history is that it`s that its propaganda. it isn`t intended to show the truth but to convince that the enemy of the united states( whoever it is) is evil. i'm not saying that hitler wasn't, but merely affirming that to get to the truth of the past one needs to be more objective and not trust blindly in the view of the goberment which clearly never is.
juli12341234 5 months ago
@juli12341234 I don't agree.....this video is really supporting Hitler's strategy of Blitkrieg.....y isn't it showing the victories of the allies.....but the airpower conquests of the allies by the Nazis.....
CoolAdi619 4 months ago
@CoolAdi619 because you can't deny the Nazis were superior at that time
foxclown 3 months ago
If by superior you mean having more airplanes and war machines, yes. However, their numerical superiority didn't help them even in the Battle of Britian. Hitler, because of an accidental bombing, switched from bombing air bases to cities. His hatred was so bad that he stopped trying to win (he almost had wiped out the RAF until the switch) to simply trying to punish the British. One more thing that proves he was not a genius.
beet74 3 months ago
@CoolAdi619 hitler was a genius, as much as we want to deny it.
foxclown 3 months ago
The LAST thing Hitler could claim was genius. He refused to listen to his generals even tho THEY were the one responsible for his early victories. He also even in his early "accomplishments" used methods that would NOT be allowed in a free country. He was also virulently Anti-Semitic, which all by itself is nonsense, even recognizing that it was prevalent in that time period. He went way too far in his hatred. Anyone wih as much hatred as he had in him could NOT be considered a genius
beet74 3 months ago

It would be good if it wasn't completely bias, history is a joke; it's completely opinion.
