This is easily one of my favorite Intellivision games. It can get very tense and suspenseful exploring the dungeons, especially when you're down to a few arrows and you hear a snake hissing or a dragon snoring somewhere in the dark. The control scheme is easy enough that you do not need to use an overlay. I never use one. Overall a very unique game and fun to play today. Novices will easily be flustered, but once you get the gameplay and arrow firing down it's great.
I agree Intellivision controllers dont last well after 30+ years...BUT, you have know idea how many 2600 joysticks I broke over a short period. Intellivision had the greatest controls of any game to date....a disc that you either loved or hated (I loved it), 9 keypad buttons and 4 side buttons. This controller made MLB one of the greatest baseball games of all time...well back in those days anyway. You obviously need the overlays but it's what made games like Sea Battle great! Gotta love Intv.
This was one the worst reviews for one of my favorite games of all time. The controls did not suck you just suck at the playing the game you may want to think about going int to the gray mountains first to get a bunch of arrows before tackling something like a blue mountain. Also research the game because you where all over the place in the review. You did not know one colors of the mountains and what the contained.Just felt like you did the whole thing on the fly. Which is why it sucked.
Thanks for posting this! My friends and I played this endlessly in the early 80s. As I grew up in a pretty rough neighborhood, none of these men lived past 40yrs old, as I have. So it is bittersweet but definitely great to see this game again. My favorite f-up was when you'd hear a dragon, shoot into the darkness and the arrow would rebound right back at you! Lots of laughs!! Thanks!! I'm headed to ebay!
@mrekbass The monster sounds from the offscreen creatures used to freak me out as a kid! Especially with the harder difficulty levels where they rush in and stomp all over you. We ended up giving our intelevision system along with 20 some games to our neighbors when we moved back in 1997 :(
You suck ass at this game. Red mountain=axe, white=arrows, purple=keys/crown, blue=boat. The mice can kill you. White=mice, red=snakes, blue=demons and dragons, purple=dragons and demons. The controls do not suck---you do. You can memorize the overlay and not have to use it, which hinders the sensitivity of the buttons. Again, you suck at the easiest level (white smoky ountain)...
glad you liked my gameplaying skillz. you can join my fanclub if you like. we get together every friday night and talk about how awesome i am and how much the intellivision controller sucks. you'd fit right in.
@JoeyTribiane white they are gray dumb ass and there not mice they are spiders and they do not kill you they eat your fucking arrows and the final level is cloudy mountain hence the name of the mother fucking game retards.
1. Try this...go to top left corner and then go up and to the left = you will come out on the bottom right of the screen near the castle. Used to do this all the time hehe
2. Do you know where I can see a video of Intellivision Sea Battle...I loved that one!
Im thinking of getting an intellivision just for this game. It looks like a great game and still looks fun even though it has very primitive graphics but good graphics dont make a good game
Yeah, this game is one of the better games for the Intellivision. Fun to play, even today. Keep in mind though that the RPG qualities are minimal compared to today. It plays more like a straight up action game.
Also, if you're thinking about getting an Intellivision make sure it comes with a power cord. Those things can be hard to get (they use something like 16v instead of the standard 9).
Did you have this system when you were a kid? Intellivision was my first Video game system. My first games were Burgertime, Demon Attack, Utopia, Advanced Dungeons & Dragons ,and Frog Bog.
Right on man! This is my favorite game on Intellivision as well. I have recorded my footage for my review. Just haven't got around to editing and stuff yet. I got the same RF shadows on my footage lol. I am also working on many Intellivision reviews. So keep an eye out for them. I really like this video here. Keep up the awesome videos.
Looks pretty cool. But Intellivision has just about the worst controller made. I'm not sure why Colecovision, Intellevision and even Atari had those keypads on the systems...

This is one of the best games for Intellivision, but still better is it's sequel: AD&D II: Treasure of Tarmin.

I love Intellivision!!
I wish I could find one.
The only reason I actually know about these old games and systems is that my aunt had/ has and intellivison II. xD
Such great games!
I find them better and more challenging than games these days.
I totally failed at this game though... she didn't have any of her guides left over Dx
So I had no clue what was going on.
Have you played pitfall, burger time, space armada, or frogger for intellivison?
Those are my favorites.

@lemonademegan Actually, you can find Intellivisions on eBay. That's where I found mine. :)

The controller still sucks with the overlay. Have you ever even played this game? -_-
xsdsdds1 2 years ago
Uh, yeah...I'm old...lol. Sorry if I offended you. Try it without the overlay---you'd do twice as good.
JoeyTribiane 2 years ago
Oh yeah---the spiders take your arrows, and the bats make it so that you do not hear the monsters. the blue demons make no sound.

Nice review. This really is a classic game that's kind of overlooked. Very innovative at the time.

Great review, i never had an intellivision, but when this game came out it must have been incredible, i am a huge rpg fan.

the controls were great, how else would you aim better then the key pad buttons?
Intellivision controllers did not suck, all you had to do was spend a little time getting used to them.
