@oggelbe2007 Where are you getting those numbers? Neither of the data plans cost that much. Furthermore, anyone with a jailbroken iPhone can just tether to there iPad. Even if you don't want that, it's not even required to use 3G. There are iPad models that don't even /have/ mobile broadband.
It destroys the Kindle for everything apart from reading books.
If you want to know if you can tolerate reading books on an iPad longterm, then read an entire book on your computer.
Unpleasant? Yes.
Don't you think there might be a reason why very, very, very few people read books on LCD screens, and ebook readers didn't take off until electronic ink? The reason is electronic ink. The iPad doesn't have electronic ink.
Kindle is already dead. If I was Amazon, I'd cut my losses and slash the price in half to make it a cheap alternative to the iPad and market it based on value, especially considering the ipad's price right now.
You don't have 150,000 apps on the Kindle. You can't read mail on the Kindle. You can watch movies & YouTube on the Kindle. You can't listen to music on the Kindle. You can't browse the Internet on the Kindle. You can't search maps or look at your photos on the Kindle. You can't check the calendar or write notes or check the weather or say a voice memo or use a calculator or check the stocks on the Kindle. Yeah, the Kindle really shines compared to the iPad. -.-
@nimblewolf7 Only the 3g model has a subscription and it is 29.99 only if you want unlimited 3g data. Also the iPad isn't 899 it's 629-829 depending on how many gb you want it to have. If you get the wifi model it is only 499-699.
It's a cool feature, but will not destroy the kindle. The kindle has a specially designed screen that has the appearance of paper, and is a lot less harsh on the eyes than a bright-lit screen. Would you want to read an entire book on a bright computer screen? I wouldn't.
The ipad has a feature while reading the book that allows you to lower the brightness so your wrong about being harsh on the eyes you can calibrate it to whatever fits you best. and sure the kindle looks like paper but does it matter?
If you want to do other things in addition to reading books then either purchase the iPad or a computer. If you want a device that provides an optimal experience for reading electronic books, then the Kindle will not disappoint you. The Kindle does not have a color screen yet but it will if it incorporates color e-ink technology. Fujitsu has already designed an electronic reader with it so the technology is already here. It just needs to be incorporated into the Kindle.
Bottom line is that the Kindle is a better device for reading electronic books whereas the iPad is a better device for multiple functions. The iPad's LED screen limits its ability to provide an optimal and energy efficient reading experience at the same time allowing it to do more things. The Kindle's e-ink screen limits its ability to provide users with the ability to watch videos or play video games at the same time allowing it to provide an optimal and energy efficient reading experience.
The Kindle is specifically designed for reading electronic books with e-ink technology whereas the iPad is designed for multiple activities that requires an LED screen. The iPad could not do these things with an e-ink screen.
If Amazon wanted to make a device like the iPad, then they would not have used e-ink technology. Instead, they made a device that was designed for long hours of reading. I don't understand why people are comparing the Apple iPad to the Amazon Kindle. These are two different types of devices.

For reading books it does, the kindle isn't 899 dollars, and doesn't require a 30 dollar a month subscription.
