Lovely, sadly missed Sandy. This is a brilliant song, for some weird reason I would love to hear (completely different) Willie Nelson doing it....maybe I dreamt it..
Ok, strange question. I found a copy of the last Alan Freeman rock show from 78, on that, this song is played, but it's just her and the piano, and nothing else! Does anyone know where that version can be found?
Hi. I think this comes from a BBC recording she made, if I remember correctly. I think its' available from stores and Amazon etc. Glad you like the song.
This is not the album version which like the rest of that album is way over produced. i like this version better. sounds like it was done live in the studio without overdubs
Can't name them all on this one but for sure I can tell you it's Richard Thompson on lead guitar and Her husband and producer Trevor Lucas on the acoustic guitar
@westpalmscott Sounds more like Donahue to me...sorry to split hairs. From what I gather Sandy Denny (not unsurprisingly) held Thompson in high esteem.
@mapior Sorry to contradict other people, but it's NOT Richard Thompson on this version, recorded by the BBC in 1973. It's Hughie Burns guitar, Pat Donaldson bass, William A (Willie) Murray drums, and of course Sandy on vocals and piano. Richard Thompson does play on the version on the "Like an Old Fashioned Waltz" album.
This is a wonderful song: also Fish's great "progressive rock ballad" version, which I (as the Fish fan that I am) even prefer. Thanks for posting: one should not forget this forgotten masterpiece.
Sad really "theporrohman" that she was dead long before you had heard of her.
Couldn't tell how often I have had a tear my eye whenever I hear her but songs like Thompsons Farewell Farewell or Banks of the Nile just destroy me thanks for the memory
I discoverd this one recently, it is just an astounding song, the lyrics the verse chorus hook, and of course lovely Sandys' voice, which has to be one of THE
search nicolas and the iceni summer's end. they write beautiful english folk music which has echoes of denny and drake.

No. That's not Richard Thompson on lead guitar. It's Jerry Donahue. Jerry played with her on the Fotheringay album too.

Unspoilt beauty, Sandy will live on in many hearts for years to come, she was one of the greats that had to die before her potential was realised.
God Bless You Sandy xx

It's not 'forgotten' at all, just because you have large gaps in you musical knowledge don't assume others are so ignorant.
Sandy is a legend and will be loved for years and decades to come.
FWIW I think the Fish version is pretty awful but it woke you up to Sandy then it served some purpose
