Ciarán (Bourke), Barney (McKenna), Ronnie (Drew); John (Sheahan) and the picture of Diedre and Luke Kelly (early in their marriage) (in the foreground)
Thank you so much for sharing the song and the picture with us on YT :))
I can remember singing this along with 88 ratings and 12 Officers,30 seconds after releasing cruise missiles from HMS challenger in 1991 to twat the living fuck out of Iraq.
@BostonFenian actually, alot has changed. apples to oranges mate, no situation with so many differing factors can ever be the same. Obama and Nixon are completely diff people for example, nixon was a craxy fuck who would nuke anyone, obama is a pacifict (well, as much of one as a president can be)
@BostonFenian No disrespect for Castro although he failed he tried to withstand the evil capitalist powers. Don't forget the Irish fought a fight somehow equal and there where irish in the (failed) liberation of Kongo under command of Castro and Che.
Are they wearing cowboy hats? - does that help to date it.
Written by Enoch Kent originally from Scotland, but longtime resident of Canada. Appears on a Dubliners' album "Revolution" from 1970 (Blame wiki if I've made any mistakes!!)
Have looked at Google (images) for Dierdre (O,Connell) Luke's Wife and it looks like it's her. - (I'm not an LK expert but Kelly O'Neill would know for sure)
Are you sure? Because, there's another actress named Deirdre O'Connell, who also appears in movies, and who is still alive (Luke's one-timewife died of cancer in 2001, and was strictly a stage actress as far as I know).
At Google Images, I find mostly pictures of the other Deirdre (several from a play in which she appeared in 2007). Adding "focus theatre" does nothing either. I've only ever seen 2 b&w pics of Deirdre; apparently she was a redhead tho.
I've seen it recently in "print form" (News or magazine articles scanned and put on web) - The accompanying text explains that it is on the set of "Richard's Cork Leg" at the Abbey Theatre - First show March 1972, hope this helps
Surprisingly since this is one of the more popular Luke Kelly songs, I actually didn't listen to it until recently. Now I can't stop listening to it, It's fantastic!
Fuck nukes.

Replace "Brezhnev" with "Khamene'i", "Nixon" with "Obama", and "Castro" with "Kim Jong-il", and not much has changed has it?

No offense to Simon and Garfunkel, but this song is WAY better than The Sun is Burning.
Makes me wish that Luke could've been nicknamed Luke "The Button Pusher" Kelly instead.
Great, as per usual.

It's on the 1970 album revolutions, no clue who wrote it

It was written by Enoch Kent. I assume it was written in the late 1960s because it mentions Nixon and Brezhnev.
