I was 15 at the time, a die hard Irish fan living in South Carolina. Alabama was the pride of the South and never have I seen build up to a national championship game as this game.
I was 7, a Bama boy through and through. I loved my team dearly (as most bama boys do) and this game broke my heart. Even at 7. Every Bama fan, despite the bitterness of the loss, realized they saw something special that night. I went to the Bryant museum and visited their video archive. What did I choose to see? You got it...this terrible (yet beautiful in some weird way) loss. This game has tons of mystique and is so representative of collective EXCELLENCE!
I was eight when this game was played...it was so memorable for a young catholic kid like me. I would cry when ND lost and would be deliriously happy when they won...this victory carried me for weeks. I couldn't have been happier.
One of college football's all-time greats passed away May 24th, 2007. Pete Demmerle who played such a critical role in this game died of ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease). Pete Demmerle who is mentioned by Howard Cosell in this clip was everything you would want in a collegiate athlete. All American, Academic All American and a special human being. He had the best hands and ran the most precise routes of any ND football player I have seen. May God Bless Pete Demmerle and those he loved!
The entire game exists. I have just clipped out portions of the broadcast so people can see some it. I am not at liberty to sell or distribute the broadcast at this time.
I'm curious why the networks, ESPN Classics, who ever owns the rights to the film won't air it on TV or make DVD copies and sell it. They would make a fortune. I would love to see those great games of the 70's especially this one. Why keep it in the vault ?
because this game shows how college football is a joke because they dont have a playoff format notre dame beats alabama yet alabama is the 1973 national champion how do those idiots figure that out this game proves that retards are in control of the polls and college football.
In my lifetime this was the greatest college football game I had ever seen! It had everything you could want in a National Championship game. I have been a Notre Dame fan for 44 years and the 1973 season is still the most memorable season I can remember. I was 10 years old at the time and I literally lived and died with Notre Dame football. What a great year that was for Notre Dame Football! Ara vs Bear Bryant, what can you say.
I thought it was only me that thought that? I was 9 years old at the time and still remember the long 3rd down pass. What a game that was!!!!!! I always felt that when people compare the great college football games of the last 50 years this one always gets overlooked. But still these were by far the best teams of their day, and they lived up to that very much....
This game was the first time my parents let me stay up that late. The game was so exciting that when it ended I ran around the house screaming and jumping up and down. My parents had mercy on me and let me stay up another 30 minutes till New Years struck. It was the Best New Years celebration of my life!
Any time a college football video is posted, hatards are engaging in flame wars.

It's great you realize you saw a great game as a young kid!

@rhkinsaul. I think this game really built the legend of Bear Bryant and the Alabama football program. Likewise for the SEC, you look at teams today.
