He's gonna kill you. We have a few of those that moved in just last year and stuck around. One landed on my my fence, I thought it was a cat. lol It let me walk right up to it and take its photo...though walking up to it wasn't planned, I couldn't see where it was at since I'm short. ^^; But he didn't mind, which was a good thing for my fingers. :3 They are so awesome. I call him Gary. ;D
I'm actually going to taking conservation and wildlife protection courses next semester I want to work to conserve our resources and protect endangered species I hope to work with owls someday..
Wow, you're really having a conversation with it. LOL. At first I thought this was a joke. I could tell it wasn't the owl vocalizing, then when it responded to you it was amazing to watch. cool. thanks for posting.
The way thw owl walks... wings (arms) behind its back, head down, looking at the ground, slowly pacing in one direction... looks like it's thinking about something.
so cool to SEE one hooting. I've only heard the hooting outside in total darkness (which is cool enough). When he inflates that beautiful white bib I can really see why they're called "cat owls", the white bib, the tabby stripes, the razor claws, the piercing eyes... Magnificent bird. BTW I love the snippet of your "owl talk" at the end ;-)
@QuinEXE sorry. Idiots with their PETA "all animals under human care are slaves" horseshit really get on my nerves. It shows a lack of common sense and a staggering inability to pay attention, thus exposing animals to a real risk of harm.
I have this terrible idea in my head of some stupid asshole in California in a ski-mask "freeing" dozens of "enslaved" raptors from their cages...where they promptly get eaten by the out-of-control feral dog and cat population, also a direct result of PETA.
i just went outside for a smoke and heard several of these owls really close. i followed the hoot of one and it lead me to the church just across the road from us and i saw one just sitting on the roof of the church. amazing birds.
@LaurenMinutes I think he would make a great Sherlock Holmes, with all that pondering and looking down (at clues, of course). Better than Robert Downey Jr.
he looked genuinely confused at first then he started having a conversation with her LOL.. then apparently she insulted him and he started flapping about
I've seen this type of owl in our area in Kansas, before. It wasn't this close. That's for sure. I had no idea that their legs are that thick. Wow. They look like cankles. Strong grip.
@Holister951 You're a jackass and an idiot. It's a rescue bird, not a captive. The only way you can legally keep an owl or any other bird of prey is if you're a licensed handler and the bird can never be released due to permanent injury. This owl is crippled and would die in the wild.
Your profile proves exactly what kind of a "nature fan" you are. Go watch more Disney movies and come back when you're ready to talk about real life animals and their real life needs in the REAL LIFE world.
The owl specimens in the Animal Science building at my college have been mounted incorrectly. They have all have three toes in front and one in back.
Can they not be released if imprinted on humans? I had a neighbor who raised an owl and it one day burrowed out and was never seen again. I hope the little guy survived.
Had a Great Horned Owl almost take me out, while I was jogging down the, South Seminole Trail beside Markham Woods Road in Lake Mary Fla. I saw a rat rippin into the brush on my left, then looked forward , and this Horned Owl, is like chest level straight at me. No joke haters, wingspan at least 5-6 ft. Im like WTF! Swear to god, its wing touched my shoulder or it was turbulance. Simply amazing. Missed the rat and sat in a tree staring at me. Started making insane sounds, guess it was pissed.
Something like that happenend to me once. I was riding my bike, just getting ready to turn into a corner and a big owl flew in front of me. I stopped and watched it disappear into the woods. The wing span was huge.
i did some volunteer work at Oak Mnt. State Park in Pelham, Alabama (just south of Birmingham since you've likely never heard of Pelham) We had a nice collection of "resident"owls includeing a male and female Great hornes. Anyways, don't really know why i'm telling you this but u should check out Oak Mnt. if you're ever in Alabama with some free time. It's actually a wild life rehabilitation center within the park.
i live on a farm once now and then i will get a great horned owl in my themonother gaege house . very pritty birds. he looks pissed off LOL . shold ask the owl how many licks do it take to get to the center of a lolly pop LOL now that wold be funny .
Nope. It's a surprise attack. What's an osprey to do? Like with a catch-pole for dogs, raptors keep the impaled victim an arm's length away. The owl need not lift the victim, only pull it over the side and ride it to the ground where it can be dispatched. To paraphrase the wizard Merlin when appraising the mad Cully, "You will never leave his grip alive."
I'm not 100% but, i think those are for when your holding the bird on your arm, with that big glove, you tie the bird to the glove so it can't fly away? But I could be totally wrong?
Hi, I have a question would it be possible for them to sort of fly right over u like about 6 inches close to u like try to scare u maybe cuz i was at the ranch once in mexico and i was walking to my grandmas house and i felt this big ol' gust of wind right over my head at night i looked up i could not see anything i got so scared we ran for it lol. They say its witches but i try not to belive in it.. could owl's possibly do that, I heard it happen to my sis once too. Please reply! Thanks
They're such amazing birds. They're huge. My freind almost go maimed by one! It was attacking his baby ducks so he attacked back with a flimzy piece of wooden siding; the only weapon on hand!
The owl won the fight. Their four inch talons are deadly weapons. Their feet are as big as your hands and are deadly wapons! They are amazing, powerfull, deadly predators!!!
