Peggy's gifts are subtle. She doesn't jump out at you. There's a wistfulness in her singing that no other seems to match. And she has an air of grace about her. I too am a 'solitude' type person. I heard "Is That All There Is" last night and it brought me to tears. I just read "Fever", her biography, so I'm still getting to know her. She had a style all her own.
@cdadave83814 Good to hear from you again Dave . It's good to have your comments , and I'm chuffed that you're still enjoying my uploads ! I'm always pleased to meet a fellow fan of Peggys' too . Best Wishes , Gareth.
Diversity of thought. How incredible we are as creatures. I think we all shape our musical tastes based on our experiences in life. I'm a very solitude person who likes his aloneness, I tend to be introspective and people like Olivor, and Piaf, Garland, and Snow with hand gestures, pain in their faces, emotion in their voices who feel what they are singing intrigue me. They force me to think about what they are saying. It's not just music to me, it's listening to a singers heart.
Ahhh ...I see where your taste lies ! Yes I understand . I seek the same as you , but I find the quiet , suggestive style hits me harder ( as it does in films and books , too) ....whereas I guess it can't work so well for you . It's good that we all have different tastes , eh? Thanks for your comments , Playio. It's good meeting you.
I think it's just wonderful when people can agree to dis-agree and remain respectful. some of the hostile comments I read on here from time to time disturb me. Thank you for being so gracious. By the way, if you get a chance to listen to Phobe Snow singing "Teach me tonight" please do so and let me know what you think.
LOL! I quite agree . It's just appalling reading some of the vile stuff thats written ...and I don't think its just kids that do it . Thanks for the tip about Phoebe Snow . I'll check her out .
hey puglet. I know you love music and I stumbled accross a band you might like. check out Pink Martini singing "Je NE Veux Pas Travaiille" It knocked me out. Your opinion, please.
So funny that you say that, because I went to listen to Jane Olivor's version and, to be maybe too honest, I thought that Jane sounded over-dramatic, pedestrian, and even a little whiny. Oh well. Different strokes, I guess!
As an afficianado of cabaret I love vocalists who display emotion when they sing. I want to feel the pain, or joy that they are trying to get accross. I look at all music as I do opera, a story. If someone is singing about a death then I want that pain to come through to me in thier singing. This song is about getting another chance and questioning how one has lived their life. It should not be, (in my opinion ofcourse) sung as a bouncy, bubbly, song. Interpretation is essential.
Perfectly fine as your opinion, ever if one man's "display of emotion" can be another's "emotional excess". Your last sentence: I don't hear bubbly in either of these 2 vocals, but if forced to call one that, it would have to be Olivor's (only because I associate bubbly with juvenile, which is the image her approach brings to my mind). To me, Lee's version suggests the paradox of a mature, jaded character who is ruminating ... yet might not truly truly want to leave her comfortable life.
I guess you maybe more used to Janes version . Listen to Peggys , though , and it's a wistful, subtle version ...especially towards the end . Janes version , to me , is a bit too colourful ....but I guess we all have different tastes!
Puglet 7, thank you SO MUCH for posting this. I heard the song 37 years ago and never knew its title. I never forgot it, either. Peggy Lee is one of the best. A thousand thanks!
That's a pleasure , ickiepoo ( Great name!!) . The songs available on CD currently , if you're interested . The Album's called " Make It With You." Best Wishes , Gareth.
Really pleased you've enjoyed this clip . I've got much more Peggy Lee to post ...and will do as soon as I replace my broken DVD/VIDEO machine! Gareth.
An artist for 59 years. Who can match her, really.
The new generation doesn't get the.....time.

You know how I can instantly tell if a tune's good or not? It makes me shiver. And Peggy does that here.

Peggy Lee was sensational in these bitter-sweet melodies, her presence is remembered long after the video has finished.
