Being proportionate won't win a war. If you are subjected to terrorist attacks many times a day, every day, the millitary needs to destroy the terrorists. If they retaliate with the same force, then the rocket attacks will continue. What they need to do is bring them down once and for all. No modern, western democracy should be subjected to terrorism every single day. Israel left Gaza too soon, they should have brought down Hamas completetly and permanently stopped the rocket attacks.

I think that you need to research Israel's operations in Gaza. They drop flyers over the buildings indicating that people should get out. If the people can't get out, they didn't bomb the buildings. In operation Cast Lead, there were civilian casualties. These could be much more easily avoided if Hamas didn't hide in populated areas, and didn't use human shields. Should Israel have been more careful in certain situations? Sure. But I don't think that Israeli policy is disproportionate.

The key difference here is that Hamas targets civilians, at least Israel is trying to target Hamas specifically. So long as Palestinians choose to employee terrorism against a civilian population, Israel will be justified in retaliating. Being proportionate won't win a war. If you are subjected to terrorist attacks many times a day, every day, the millitary needs to destroy the terrorists. If they retaliate with the same force, then the rocket attacks will continue. What they need to do is bring them down once and for all. I think that you need to research Israel's operations in Gaza. They drop flyers over the buildings indicating that people should get out. If the people can't get out, they didn't bomb the buildings. In operation Cast Lead, there were civilian casualties. These could be much more easily avoided if Hamas didn't hide in populated areas, and didn't use human shields. Should Israel have been more careful in certain situations? Sure. But I don't think that Israeli policy is disproportionate.

Thanks for mentioning rubber bullets that Israel uses when they have stones thrown at them and thanks for mentioning the fact that Hamas fires rockets from schools and heavily populated areas. While the rockets fired number in the thousands, Palestinians hide their resistance fighters and shelter them, what do they expect? They are participating in the killing of innocent people. Does it make someone innocent to shelter someone who's just attempted murder? I feel for their children..

The idea of proportionate force is stupid. Would you like Israel to fire back one bullet for every one Hamas fires?
The only way to end a war is to CRUSH the enemy. If you just skirmish with them, things only escalate.
For example: In Somalia, 5000 rebels attempted to take over. Somalia responded by deploying 5000 government troops. Things escalated and thousands died.
Had they deployed 50 000 troops, the war would have ended in a day.

And don't even get me started on the well documented use of human shields by Hamas, and their storage of weapons in civillians areas like schools, hospitals, mosques...

The key difference here is that Hamas targets civilians, at least Israel is trying to target Hamas specifically. So long as Palestinians choose to employee terrorism against a civilian population, Israel will be justified in retaliating. Let's not pretend that Palestinian terror forces are just "throwing stones", while Israel is "burning buildings".

And Israel broke the cease fire by launching an attack in November, which pushed Hamas to recommence rocket operations. Not the first time on Israel's part, either.

Which UN are you referring to? I suggest you open Wikipedia and look up human shields, and see for yourself the cases in th Gaza Strip and West Bank, and in the 2008 Gaza War.
