  • so far uefi is a joke... it offers no functionality that wasn't available with the old BIOS.. and it tends to have problems recognizing keyboard/mouse... mine thinks i actually have 2 mice and one keyboard installed which makes navigating the menus close to impossible....

  • @USOGPcom Not really, all text is boring. Besides, what games can you possibly play on text alone? Were there even 3D hardware acceleration at all?

  • EFI lets u install an OS on a primary hard drive of over 2TB an be recognized. BIOS limits u to 2.1 TB on primary boot HDD.

  • What the fuck happened to Windows XP...

  • @USOGPcom They forgot Windows 98 too.

  • yeh yeh.. intel intel

  • @21boxhead And yet, that doesn't invalidate my comment.

  • yup saw this on their site..

  • Jag vill ha ett firmware (BIOS eller EFI) som är open source.

  • But.. what does EFI means? Or.. what is it used for?

    Thank you.

  • @terae77 EFI står för Extensible Firmware Interface och är ett firmware utvecklat av Intel som en ersättarer för BIOS som utvecklades av IBM.

  • @sojameh Thanks, but I'm afraid I gotta admit I don't know even a word in that language...

  • @sojameh Thank you, but I don't understand really well your language :S Could you rewrite it in English or Spanish, please??

  • Seems risky... The point of the BIOS is for hardware ID and basic loading information.

Beyond that, a boot loader takes over and your all good.

Making it "easier" with a more full GUI type interface can cause more issues then it's worth. Some people will go in and change things because it looks like an OS. Plus, there is more for it to load for configuration.

It's a real nice appearance and concept, just to risky IMO.

  • @deadonewalking i dont think a computer idiot wouldn't even know how to get in bios to begin with and even if get that far they won't know what to do they simply press the reset button.

  • This is not needed for P5Q boards because it's just cosmetics.

  • Seeing some of the older PC users go "back in my day we only used a keyboard, and we liked it that way! It built character" is kind of sad. Having a major upgrade to the whole BIOS is a very welcome change in my book.

  • i cant even get the update tools cause of asus they dont host it on their own site how stupid is that

  • So is it a BIOS or is it EFI?

EFI is a replacement to the BIOS. And if it is EFI does it include support for EBC to allow for working hardware prior to installing OS specific drivers?

  • Nice. EFI supports boot from GPT

  • there is nothing new really. ami made gui bios with mouse support 15 years ago.

  • @elksalmon84 We used to have an old 486 with a win 3.x inspired user interface & it even had mouse support.

  • @richkawaiipikachu

Ja, AMI hade BIOS för 15 år sedan med GUI och mus stöd.

BIOS behöver inte begränsas till text, kan vara GUI också. BIOS är ett firmware som implementerar BIOS API calls.

  • @elksalmon84 exactly. i remember a 486 board with gui bios by ami. it looked like win3.11 but that was the thing back then.

  • i smell vista on that bios....

seriously traditional interface is way enough for general use...( i meant the old ami bios) i don't know what's point for a bios to have aero effect?

  • Is it me or does this (especially in this video) make BIOS operations look like a LOT more work?

  • Great BIOS, I love it.

  • (U)EFI is more than a new User Interface -_-

  • Wait.... if Macs use EFI in place of BIOS to load the kernel, will having this allow me to install OSX natively on a system /without/ using an EFI bootloader card?

  • @HHBones

No. You'd have to create a custom EFI for your computer to be compatible with OS X.

  • Apparently the 1155 Gigabyte P67's are getting a bios flash to UEFI sooner or later, they are using the regular old bios (Which I'm not complaining about)

Just if I OC now I'll lose that OC later on, ASUS are already showing problems with their 1155 UEFI boards; mostly to do with overclocking.

  • It will make my overclocking look nicer but it will also give the impression to idiots that is just like another menu which will mean more idiots messing up their PC's

  • I don't support this.

I like the feeling of the old keyboard controled things.

  • I'd rather see a migration fof the firmware based startup procedure inside of BIOS. I agree with kelainefes that this new appealing interface will probably lure people into doing "hardcore configurations" by themselves when they in reality have no idea what all these things are. Thus opening a new slots for incrementing failures during POST for techies.

@jwong14, GRUB isn't BIOS nor is it EFI, it's the bootloader which is the stage that BIOS leaves over to after the POST process is complete.

  • Is it possible to program it with apple or hackintosh EFI?

  • Comment removed

  • working with the mouse seems kinde slower, but I do like where this is going too. So it's a nice start, curious where this will be going too. Though I'm noot that excited as to the point where I say 'I cant wait to have this'

  • Looks quite pretty! BIOS has always seemed quite boring and dull. And apparently there is/will be a internet browser too! As long as the main functionality is still there, NICE!

  • this is Y i love ASUS their innovators

  • @jakestweeker Apple was the first large company to embrace "EFI", please look at the "Open Firmware" article on Wikipedia.

  • So one needs a keyboard AND a mouse to configure a computer now? I preferred the serial-port terminal version :)

  • looks nice, When will we see this stuff on AMD boards.

  • It's the same damn thing, but with a mouse. I'll stick with my less-flash bios.

  • Is this a replacement for BIOS? Does this spell the end for BIOS?

  • @mustrapefoley no dum ass it a (GUI) graphical user interface

  • @mustrapefoley I hope so, but I hope Microsoft doesn't get their way with TPM on computers making them, in essence, very powerful dummy terminals.

Please read the article "Next-Generation_Secure_Computing_Base" on Wikipedia. TPM = SCARY!!!!

  • As long as the EFI interface can be used with just a keyboard. If they force you to use a mouse then beware.

  • Firstly, ASUS is pronounced as "A-seuss"? I always called is "A-sus)

  • @8jwong14 Different strokes for different folks...;-)

  • @8jwong14 Yeah, dumb isn't it. I always called it 'Asses' :) Like in pegassus

  • @ditsie Haha. "asses" I really don't need a mouse to use Bios. I'm running Ubuntu so I installed something called BURG. It beautifies my boot. bit ly/bn4NhV

I'm using another theme than the ones shown.

  • @ditsie @ditsie Haha. "asses" I really don't need a mouse to use Bios. I'm running Ubuntu so I installed something called BURG. It beautifies my boot. bit ly/bn4NhV

(Remove the space in the bitly link to get to the site with the screenshots.)

I'm using another theme than the ones shown.

  • Only for P5Q Deluxe -.-. I have a P5Q-E and i don't have the chance to try this EFI Bios... :(

  • I've always said A-SUS, not 'A-SOOS'

    Screw your ASOOS

  • If my memory serves me correctly American Megatrends released a Windows like GUI for their BIOS sometime around 1994 to 1998 I think. It turned out to be a big disaster for them and in the next version they went back to a text based GUI and no one was game to do it again. I hope this is not history repeating itself.

  • HAHA! "ASOOS" lol

  • There was a time when Asus had quality Motherboards.

  • @XGViper2gamer Yep. Now

  • Hm. It's not like your average user would go into the BIOS anyway.

old BIOS is the way to go. It's simple, that's why.

  • @XrisWolf BIOS is going away, that is okay, but BE VERY CAUTIOUS of motherboard makers who put a TPM (

Trusted Platform Module) on their motherboard. It, combined with the BIOS, and Microsoft's greed, have the potential to severely limit your freedom as a consumer of computer products.

  • Now we need a BIOS to load the BIOS

  • @juanete838 lol

  • Note how they "passed by" Windows 2000 and XP, completely more relevant than vista or 7

  • i hope you can disable the GUI D:

  • WINWINWIN...

its not only a better interface.. it has a shell indeed and it handles the firmware drivers, so that the OS only needs the EFI driver to control the pc.

About time for some improvement on firmware!

  • I wish you could flash the Mac EFI.

A custom built Mac would be epic.

  • Is there EFI Shell on this?

  • "But what happened to BIOS?"

nothing tragical and that's really great

  • About fucking time. :I

  • WIN FAG

  • Erhm, Firstzoom..maybe you are the one who can help me out.I have a P5Q - Deluxe board with the Efi bios on it, since it sucks i want to get back my old bios, but how? it wont let me flash it trough ezflash, and creating a bootable Dos sector with Efudos and the biosfile didnt work either...

    Any suggestions?

    Thnx!

  • who needs those nice graphics when only experienced users touch the BIOS to make adjustments? i do those stuff faster with my keyboard anyway.

  • @johnykgr At least capitalise the beginning of your sentences.

Let's say you don't have access to IT and your computer breaks. I do things faster with both a mouse and keyboard.

And this is old, too - A BIOS with a mouse has existed in the 90s.

  • @TwiIightSparkle If your computer breaks how would you even be able to access the BIOS?

  • @TwiIightSparkle well if you dont know about bios you shouldnt mess with it.

  • @johnykgr then I suppose experience users don't need a GUI in Windows OS either....

  • @GOOB3000 im talking about bios which is used by less people, not windows which is used by everyone

  • @johnykgr That's what people who used typewriters said when the first computers came out. Don't discount invention just because you're good at doing it the old fashioned way.

  • That CPU is gonna melt.

  • It is real EFI first you needed SATA DVD drive to boot IN UEFI:DVD option then delete all hdd partions it create 3 boot parts to hdd and after install you see in administrative tools in diskmanagmet EFI boot partition second part is hidden and your pc boot in UEFI

  • Прикольный Биос молодцы!!!!

  • What a HUGE CONFUSION! BIOS .. EFI are not the same.... I really dont understand this video maded by ASUS... BIOS and EFI are two different technologies

  • work with my Asus P5Q Turbo?!

  • Is it a GUI BIOS, or is it EFI?

  • The BIOS is kept on a separate chip on your motherboard. It controls the hardware configuration and settings needed for the operating system to run. Adjusting these basic level settings can either enhance or in some cases hinder your PC performance. Knowing how to do it usually takes years of tinkering with many different PC's. This new system, will make the environment to adjust those settings more familiar to people who know little about it.

  • yes bios is in separate chip.. what is the bios rom size? P5Q series -is this mobile /server/ desktop board? usually we wont go inside the BIOS setup every time.. we may not go even once in yearly..it depends.. but majority of the people dont know even about the bios.. i think this bios should be costlier than ordinary bios... for a very few time setup check in a year this much costl is not needed...

  • @FirstZoom

Those who "know little about it" should not be changing BIOS/EFI settings in the first place. They may very well end up with a burned CPU or other damages to their hardware. Having a GUI interface does not necessarily make changing settings easier and faster. What you failed to mention about the benefits of UEFI instead of the dated BIOS is the support for functions that BIOS is incapable of, such as internet access, decreased boot times, built-in bootloader, etc.

  • Comment removed

  • @MrHari1973 It's NOT needed to rework the basic system thats been in use for TWENTY years??? Are you kidding? Who would want to wait an extra 15 seconds at boot time rather than 1-2 secods for UEFI?

  • @304Stephen Agreed. It's about god damn time. I've been asking for this for years, I even suggested putting Windows Mobile on motherboards.

  • @NeoTechni no Windows on the motherboards would be HELLISH

You would damn us all! (Kidding, but still a *very* bad idea.)

  • @MrHari1973 who cares how much memory it needs? every pc out there comes with a couple gigs as it is.

    This is completely necessary

  • I am all for updating old ideas but that looks terrible.

Oh and by the way, this idea has been tried before just google "winbios"

  • emand lust mir mir zu labern am tele oder auch per cam zu chaten

  • Useless bling-bling is useless. Greets, Captain Obvious.

  • A want the GU like this below :) with windows and icons :) but in win95 ot XP style not 3.1 :P :D

  • I like tis one more :)

    /watch?v=e6qntzmHHHk&feature=player_embedded

  • I should also add, how much time does the average user spend in BIOS? How much time should they spend? Frankly I'm hoping that BIOS gets kicked aside for EFI.

  • I wouldn't say this is new or breaking the mold. I had an old MoBo (possibly Asus) from the late 90s that had a GUI interface to BIOS. This simply adds polish. Any mouse worked (PS2, Serial and USB).

  • I love Asus. but GUI BIOS is unnecessary

  • crap....

  • wonderful, a user friendly BIOS means more work for me as a techie as more people will think they know what they are doing. :D

  • @kelainefes haha seriously, I'm all for this.

  • @kelainefes also means more money, plus working with computers is fun.

  • @Galient5 GUI bios is standard issue for 1155 socket mobo i believe and the new Z68 chipset will allow overclocking for built-in GPU and CPU thus making H61/H67 chipset obsolete, so having a GUI bios would be easier for overclockers.

  • @21boxhead ummm... ok, not sure where that came from, since I just said that he would get more money if people who thought they knew what they were doing broke their bios config and brought it in. Context is king.

  • Useless.

  • I'm glad i chose a P5Q Deluxe 1 year ago.

    I <3 ASUS

  • Am I the only one who always pronounced 'Asus' like 'chases'?

  • I always pronounce it like 'anus'.

  • I wish Gigabyte had this for my mobo...

  • what advantage does this have over a text based bios? It looks as if it's organized the in teh same manner. the only difference is that you can click with a mouse.

  • It's prettier..

  • wish my p6t deluxe v2 had this

    way 2 go asus

  • I've always been a customer of ASUS motherboards so I'm glad ASUS has developed this GUI.

  • Big whoop, a bios for the retards

  • Yeah..... BOI!!!!

  • Fuck google chrome bar on the bottom of the post comments. FUCK U GOOGLE for putting it so close that it is possible to misclick it when posting comments.

And do no EVIL means DO NO EVIL SNEAKY SHIT EITHER MOTHERFUCKERS.

  • I myself can understand the things shown in the GUI but I think it should be in terms that an ordinary PC user could grasp.

  • Waste of time and resources. Overclockers, enthusiats, and some DIYs are comfortable with the old interface. Joe Six Pack from the middle of Kansas is going to buy a HP or Dell anyway. Who is this going to help?

  • oh boy this looks... just stupid so many things could go wrong and for what for a mouse fuck it

  • OMG i dont know what i just looked but i have no idea what this shit is but it looks cool

  • GREAT but how much? asus isn't cheap

and from the looks of it this wont be either

  • OS X has been rocking an EFI for years. Congratulations on kind of catching up.

  • Yes, didn't Intel do a good job creating it back in 1998.

Funny how HP used it back then and now Apple fanboys think Steve came down from on high and splooged it onto their macs personally.

  • This one from Asus looks better I have seen GUI drive bios in the past but it doesn't comes close to this.

  • omg awesome.

  • What a great step in the right direction. I hope that in the continued spirit of increasing usability, there will be more in-depth documentation for each setting available from within the BIOS. Hopefully in a form that a normal person could understand.

  • Another step in PC evolution! Thank you ASUS!!

  • nmsdyui

  • After my P3 breaks, I'm going to buy a desktop unit with Asus bios and motherboard and win 7 with touch screen.

    And good sound system.

Maybe I can find one at a pawn shop?

  • About time this stuff gets promoted. I'm tired of Award BIOS looking the same for the last 20 years.

  • Yes make one of the very few things that you can use to really mess up your computer if you don't know what you are doing even more accessible, brilliant.

  • You should have the system try to write out a default bios config file to an attached FAT16 usb stick whenever the motherboard has detected a "clear cmos" event. Then the user could use that file on another computer as a template and make changes, and rename it as a new file the bios can yank back in. No video board would be needed because often the system ends up being a GNU/Linux network server or dedicated appliance anyway.

  • You know what'd be REALLY cool? If you guys could include a way to show a nice, high-resolution picture of the computer case that could be used for a network icon. That'd help people understand networking more.

  • AKA WinBios v2. Graphical bios with mouse support is nothing new, and the last time it was used... it was glitz and awkwardness over what worked fine before. You can pretty something up and in most cases, it ended up reducing the functionality. I'd settle for a BIOS that did a better job with feature and settings explanations and fixing the Engrish over having something that is effectively plastic surgery.

  • This is a new interface called EFI. Not really a GUI as seen in an OS. The mouse support is not the point. The main point is the idea that they want to improve the usability of the BIOS. If you have suggestions on how to improve on this framework, please add comments which we can relay. If you all say this is not new, this is awkward, its not exactly inspiring for the team who are trying to improve it. Perhaps if its not right, please suggest ways to make it right.

  • @FirstZoom Actually, no. EFI has nothing to do with the interface, unless you mean the hardware interface. Many EFI systems still use the same type of user interface that's been in use for 30 years.

  • @freeeekyyy: We didn't mean that EFI is the reason for the GUI, rather that Asus is working on a new EFI based bios with graphical interface...

  • @inkrat773 I'm pretty sure this stuff is supposed to be built from the ground up, and is a lot faster at posting.

  • I had a motherboard back in the mid '90s with a graphical BIOS with mouse support. This isn't really 'new', it's just 'returning'.

I'm torn on it. It's nice for the BIOS screen (or, more properly, 'firmware configuration utility',) to finally seem up-to-date with modern OSes again; but at the same time, I see how having it 'difficult' can be a good thing.

Make it too easy, and people who SHOULDN'T be mucking around here will start doing things they shouldn't. The text screens keep them out.

  • Would very much like to see a web browser in the bios or even a "stub" OS similar to the kind available on EEE-PC.

  • @redleg70 Yeah, they already do that with a small Linux OS you can boot right from the BIOS chip.

  • hmmm so every little n00b can play around with the bios ... i don't mousesupport and shit like that

  • Protip: if you say 'n00b', you're still immature and new to computing seriously. Who 'plays around' with the BIOS? Let me guess, you're in middle school or high school.

  • Guess what ... you are right. But, I am not new to computing and I didn't want to start a flamewar ;) so I'm sorry if you considered this as an affront.

I don't know .. maybe you didn't get what I meant. I mean ok if we are honest there are a lot of ppl messing around with the Basic Input Ouput System (BIOS) most of them use it to overclock their rig. But the normal people don't play around with it .. you're right there.

  • BUT for me ... it doesn't make things different nor faster. The tasks would be as "slow" or as fast as they were before so it's really just to see if that works

  • And your average computer user will probably screw it up so that it doesn't boot. A gui is not necessary for bios and may do more harm than good.

  • Why would you try and clarify what the BIOS is for me? I clearly know what is means - you're just trying to sound less retarded. Again I was attacking your choice of phrase in "playing around" with the BIOS. People use it. One doesn't "play with it" unless you think that Windows command prompt is a fun toy as well.

  • ;) It's ok help's coming :P... DUDE!!! Don't you understand irony?? HAHA "retarded" :P ok calm down pls ;) I don't give a shit whether you think I'm new to computing or not ... Are YOU new to it? Why do you want to play officer on u2ube... ^^ May the force be with you my friend ;) lmfao

@Nth3nSum that's it! It is just not necessary. Noone needs it except the ones that screw it up^^ hf&gl

  • 1080p? w00t!

  • sounds like a nice gimmick but I never had the demand to use my mouse in the bios or have colored bars...

It makes the bios a bit more simple for people who are new to computers but its no use for others.

  • I agree, but ASUS is developing it to make it useful, hopefully with your help. The video shows the framework only. Any new ideas and needs you can think of for the EFI software to include in future releases, then please add them here.

  • Because ASUS definitely wants to have to go to youtube to read comments and suggestions regarding their products.

  • Weird that my old 486 DX had an American Megatrends BIOS with a graphical interface which resembled Windows 3.11, with the possibility to navigate through the windows and options using the mouse :)

    This happened 15 years ago.

  • you mean this :D

    watch?v=e6qntzmHHHk&feature=player_embedded

  • to be honest, if its to difficult for you to use your keybord in the BOIS you really really shouldn't enter it!

  • word!

  • Using the keyboard in bios is so FREAKING simple. I have no idea why people are SO AFRAID of entering bios O.o It´s actually the simplest thing to do on a comp ^^.

  • To download the ASUS EFI Beta BIOS, please check under "more info". We have included a link. As it is beta, there are no guarantees that it will work on your system.

  • Long overdue but very much appreciated :)

  • Easy would be no BIOS interface at all. Modern operating systems could provide the same interfaces in more modern and easier to use applications.

  • fail...

  • awesome! i hope this comes to the p6t deluxe! ASUS FTW!

  • AWESOME!!!

    Cheers!

    Michael

  • nett

  • why would you do this?

Is there any advantage to having to use the mouse while in BIOS?

this just looked extremely clunky, having to move the mouse up and down.

you can not improve on perfection, and that is what the current BIOS is.

  • i hope this will come out in 1 month but an update for all asus mainboards

  • mac mobos already have it (the EFI instead of BIOS i mean) since 2006, before that they used the "open firmware" which was also miles ahead of the BIOS.

  • they still have a BIOS? it's only a different interface to the BIOS? xD xD

  • EFI is not here to replace the bios entirely as you will still need it in order for the board to function.

    Read the white paper.

  • it has DRm !?!

I will nothing have a PC that functionalitiy with a XBOX 360 ;)

Oh jear the old times...that was a good time

  • finally
