  • Man Malcolm's family is going to be FURIOUS that they stole their van.

  • I think people need to realize, that the reason the kids are so annoying, is to make you feel as if your Tom Cruise in this situation, with kids all in panic mode and scared. It wouldn't be as scary if they were both sleeping, and they were driving silently.

  • the interesting thing about that scene is, that i didn't realise what the camera did at the first moment. but when the camera floats into the sky at the end of the scene, it was like: "WTF..? wait a second..! " and so i skiped back again and again and again - but still it is abolutely impossible to get it, how it was done. even with CGI and any technical tricks it is incredible. even a lot of money as explanation cannot disparage that Spielberg had very bright moment there.

  • lol in such a dramatic scene like this, humor doesnt spoil it!

"what do u mean, like europe?"

    "NO ROBBY, NO LIKE EUROPE!!!!"

  • haha "Yurop" ;)

  • I watched this movie more than 100 times ! This is not a joke really !

More than 100 times and I memorized all the cues and scenes !

    Believe me !

  • This movie is MASSIVELY let down by the kids. I wanted Dakota fanning to get fucking smushed in every scene, shes so irritating with her screaming and panic attacksl

  • @JeanLucPicardMan wha? Dakota??? The one that deserved a torturous and slow death was the stupid and annoying Robbie kid.

  • @JeanLucPicardMan LOL, that was delibrate, Dakota Fanning was suppose to be annoying in the movie, take this scene for example, if Robbie and Rachael were asleep, this scene would be very boring.

  • Children of men did it better.

  • See, this is the movie's main flaw. The stupidity of the kids.

Robbie: "What do you mean? Like Europe?"

    And Rachel with her screaming.

    Still a great movie though.

  • GOKU I CHOOSE YOU!!

  • For some reason, I'm reminded of "Temple of Doom".

  • fail at 1:10

  • @TheBanaphsh i dont see it, explain plz D:

  • @Hmraja focus at the driver sit.

  • Like Europe??? Yeah Americans,.. EU-PODZZ MUHAHAHA!! :D

  • This sequence is absolutely amazing!

  • Steven Spielberg shows in this shot that he is a MASTER director... AWESOME SHOT...

And all of the movie is full with delicious directing details. Like 154thmedia says: "nevermind the plot"

  • "rachel i'm not going to turn around, I KNOW!!"

  • Dakota Fanning script: over-act until you finish shooting

  • That girl is fuckin annoying. But good movie.

  • This shot continues to blow my mind. I will never understand why so many people hate this film. If it's because of Cruise, that's really unfair. If it's the ending, blame H.G. Wells. It is action filmmaking at its most spetacular and one of the best blockbusters of our generation. People need to give it another chance.

  • @Guigley no its because of that FUCKING annoying girl :/

  • Wow was there a making of featurette for this scene on the dvd or anything??

  • hey HD 5 XD SINGAPORE!!!

  • You americans filmakers really know how to make awesome special effects! GBA

  • It's amazing how many people are saying "Dakota needs to stop screaming and shut up!" like it's her fault, when the fact is her character is clearly neurotic. Yeah, it's annoying but that's the character, not the actress. That's what she was directed to do. To quote Chloe Moretz, "it's a movie, and it's called acting."

  • i stopped watching any movie with dakota fanning in it after this scene. my god. and if my son was such an idiot id clock him in the mouth. twice.

  • Anyone notice how when he turns the wheel, the car doesn't exactly go in the same direction?

  • @Momiru159260 OOPS! I guess they didn't quite coordinate the steering with the movement. They probably filmed it with green screen background, and the rotation around the vehicle made it difficult to coordinate the scene. Surely they knew that viewer could stop and slow down the scene for mistakes and inconsistencies.

  • "No Robby not like Europe!" lol

  • O_o "What do you mean? Like? Europe?"

    >:( "NO ROBBY! NOT LIKE EUROPE!"

  • the dad is stupid telling her daughter to shut up

  • @DSkehan2004 What would you do if a fucking alien war machine was chasing you?

  • @ridely700 I would try to stay calm and I wouldn't yell at my daughter to shut up.

  • The son is so retarded v_v

  • Favorite part of the movie, What do you guy's have against Dakota Fanning? yeah her screaming is a bit annoying in this movie and a bit over done but she's an awesome actress done more movies then you have so yeah lol

  • is it terrorists? LOL......

    like europe??? LOL

  • How in the hell they got these shots I'll never know.

  • amazing

  • Most underrated scene EVER! If someone could somehow edit out the girl then this would truly be epic.

  • There is no way the road would ever be that clear.

  • What was angle here? "Alien invasion through the eyes of a 8 year old hysterical kid"?

  • I was glad by the end of the movie Rachel was too traumatized to scream anymore.

    *sigh of relief*

  • thats why i dont like little kids or anything younger...they can never shut up and when they scream like that it drives me insane

  • Man i love this movie, but Dakota Fanning is sooo fucking annoying in it, stop the damn screaming

  • between 0:30" and 0:40", the camera goes in one side window of the car and comes out the other side!...before continuing to track them, go round the front, and finally launch into the air! how the hell did they do that???

  • @EASYTIGER10 they got a tripod to do it

  • Comment removed

  • Tom cruise = oddly enough the only sensible person in this movie.

  • Dakota Fanning... fucking cunt. ruins every movie!

  • Justin Chatwin(Robbie) . I think he was the only reason why I watched this.<3

  • awesome blue screen and computer graphics

on a side note, if by some chance I have a daughter who makes noises like that, I might just end up snapping and eating her alive

  • @manifestgtr blue screen that camera moves around?

  • no Robby, not like Europe!

  • lol you from singapore? because this hd5 is from a singapore channel...

  • i love that girl. DF rocks.

  • The first third of this movie is incredible.

  • "Hey, hey rach? How you doing there hon? How's she doing?"

    "How you doing?"

    "Good."

    "She's good."

    "Yeah? Good."

  • hi i "was" SZ5061 before i deleted that account....but correction to myself is that it wasnt the West Shore Expressway....it was the Korean War Veteran Parkway/Richmond Parkway which is also on Staten Island lol

  • Why would they pick the shitty 1990 Dodge Caravan.

Like.. for god sakes.. Why couldn't they have picked a 2005 Cadillac CTS that "just so happened to be at the repair shop" And they drove that.. LIKE?

  • @itisian LIKE because if you saw the movie you would have known that like the aliens disabled every electronic device in the planet and like by a miracle this shitty van was the only vehicle that worked.......shhh

  • @nukeusa911x2 I meant why didn't the producers/writers/directors pick A NICE CAR as the only working car. Not a shitty Dodge Caravan.

  • Wy do people hate Dakota Fanning in this one? She just dus her job

And she did it amazing. Just as Justin Chatwin

gooosh, people. this movie was amazing BEQUES of the actors in it.

  • @Lucyderidder well said. i mean, how do u expect kids to act under this situation? esp a little girl like her? seriously people.

  • @badcourtthingy exacly !!

  • Kind of hate both the kids in this movie

  • the camera guy probably felt like a badass shooting this

  • Comment removed

  • God I hated the little girl.

  • that girl disliked this

  • Spielberg Style!

  • Slap those whinning brats

  • I hate the fucking kids....

  • Speildberg did a great job with this movie! The story was okay, but they stayed in that dudes basement way too long! lol

  • OMG I would have thrown that screaming bitch out the window...

  • Tell him about the horn it made.

  • Really, i can't understand the process involved in making that scene. I see two sequences, one outside the vehicle on an actual road, and another around the car in a studio, and both mixed together with a shitload of editing. I can't think of anything else, still pretty intricate stuff.

  • Hahaha Terrorists from outaspace. That would of been funnier...

  • i like this scene, too bad the movie wasnt as good as this shot.

  • USE CONDOMS !!!!GGEZUS!!!

  • Is it terrorists?

No, this thing came from someplace else.

    What, you mean like Europe?

    No, Robbie! NOT LIKE EUROPE!!

  • Yea, Rachel sucks. She is the MOST ANNOYING creature ever to have graced the silver screen.

HOWEVER, this is an amazing scene. In fact, throughout this whole movie, Spielberg effortlessly makes us believe in his movie-making magic, his superb mastery of special effects seamlessly blended into the live action. FANTASTIC. Is it real? or is it a movie? You can't tell anymore. God DAMN this is some good movie making. However, Rachel and the Tim Robbins characters drive me nuts. I hate them!:-)LOL

  • The cinematography in this film is superb.

But I know most film students overlook this film, hipster mentality, I know this because I studied in a film school.

  • Would have been cool if the girl got zapped right when she said 'I want MOM'

  • This entire movie i wanted to throw rachel out of the car.

  • @MCDEVVOMAN: ships/ cars /train / airplanes; spielberg needed to mention all this means of conveyance, because that shows, that each transport loosed its function. in "indipendence day" the people were able to run by car, in "war of the world" its much more depressiv, and its a feelin like in a cage

@Odin310: you nerd, if your city/ town is gonna be attacked; would you believe there are fuckin big tripods from jupiter, man??

  • 'why isnt there any helicopters or airoplanes?' - that was bad because in a situation like that you wouldnt notice if there was any helicopters or aiproplanes and you sure as hell wouldnt care after finding out about the tripods!!

  • @MCDEVVOMAN

You have to remember, the boy hasn't seen anything yet...he's trying to make sense of things. It's the father thats had the traumatic experience!

  • is that girl screamin I WANT MOM, BLAAAAAAAAAAA.

  • How come his car works but no one elses? :/

  • @SpearMinti teh repare guy did it

  • @SpearMinti the reapir dude fixed it and did something to it.

  • Is there a making of? This scene is amazing!

  • i love how he says "your safe in space"and this movie is about an alien attack lol the irony

  • the avergae american girl. screams until she gets attention

  • Dakota Fanning is such an awesome actor.

  • its all animation

  • Under-appreciated movie, and a FANTASTIC piece of cinematography. Thanks for the post.

  • I'm glad that someone noticed the awesomeness of this scene.. the camera, the acting, everything. thanks man fot he post!

  • How the fuck did they shoot this scene??

  • @BoxxyFan id imagine it would have been on an ultimate arm (a hood mounted rig for a car to hold the camera that rotates).

  • @BoxxyFan As you can see in the beginning of the scene, the back two windows are opened, they used a crane mounted on a car (maybe from Pursuit systems I dunno) and they were ready to shoot. But what I wonder how they made, is the part where the camera actually flows THROUGH the car...maybe they had prepared another mounted car and cought the camera inside with another crane and continued shooting with that second car with crane... I'm sure these things were really complex to create x)

  • ...'what like europe?! '

  • The kids in this scene were uber annoying, but that really was an amazing extended shot.

  • Europeans! You bastards! HEY GUYS! ITS THE EUROPEANS THAT ATTACKED US!!!

  • Rachel is friggen annoying and Robbie is a pain in the ass. If it were me I'd leave them on the side of the road and tell them good luck.

  • The boy is an idiot and the girl needs to shut up! I hated those kids.

  • I hate that girl...

  • @ElectroBerryFinn I WOULD NOT CRY I WOULD LOLED SO HARD

  • @ElectroBerryFinn why she is scared

  • damn, the kid is really stupid, "like Europe" , "the terrorists"....is he dumb or what?

  • @Odin310

no no he made sence, im from europe and i usually come down at work in a lightningstorm

  • @Odin310

Yea, dumb kid. He should automatically have assumed that aliens from another planet had invaded and were attacking the city.

  • @Odin310 thats america ;P

  • @Odin310 Captain obvious is obvious.

  • @Odin310 It's use to show his lack of comprehension of the situation and that he had not still realized yet that the world had changed.

  • @Odin310 WTF hes not dumb

Would you believe it when your dad would tell you there are freaking alliens on the planete to kill everywonne

  • @Odin310

    @ElectroBerryFinn

He didn't see the attack or the machines. Would your first thought be, "Oh, it must be aliens attacking." Get real. The kid would certainly assume any "attack" mentioned by Cruise was by other humans.

  • @Odin310 no Robby not like Europe.......

  • @Odin310 Yeah, but at least he doesn't scream "I WANT MIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIM!"

  • @154thmedia lol it is a pretty impressive scene....i dont think alot of ppl notice that

  • They filmed this scene on the West Shore Expressway in Staten Island, NY

  • @SZ5061

i thought its was shot infront of the blue-screen~ lol~

  • @154thmedia - It's both. You can see the edits between what was shot practical and what was shot on the stage if you look closely. Spielberg will always try to use a passing wall, column or in this case, car, to hide his edits.

  • @154thmedia don't underestimate Spielberg..

  • @154thmedia ofcourse its shot infront of bluescreen in a studio.

  • @154thmedia not a green screen?

  • Comment removed

  • @jasenrooks2001 lol yeah

  • Comment removed

  • @jasenrooks2001 do u think its real?

  • @HUMONGASOUR 70# yes 30# no

  • @HUMONGASOUR just kidding

  • @154thmedia Parts of it were actually, using greenscreen.

  • @154thmedia Half of it was on the sound stage and half on the actual highway. It's quite remarkable really what they have achieved here. Some very, VERY skilled people worked on this. BIG risk but BIG results! Amazing what they can do.

  • @SZ5061 I can't remember exactly, but I did hear on the news when they were filming it on the Expressway.

  • @SZ5061 Parts of it yes, but look at 0:06 - one example of where they cut to parts filmed on greenscreen. Not even using the ultimate arm would they be able to coordinate such a sequence. It looks seamless, but it was not filmed in one take; dialogue parts had to be shot separately.
