I think people need to realize, that the reason the kids are so annoying, is to make you feel as if your Tom Cruise in this situation, with kids all in panic mode and scared. It wouldn't be as scary if they were both sleeping, and they were driving silently.
the interesting thing about that scene is, that i didn't realise what the camera did at the first moment. but when the camera floats into the sky at the end of the scene, it was like: "WTF..? wait a second..! " and so i skiped back again and again and again - but still it is abolutely impossible to get it, how it was done. even with CGI and any technical tricks it is incredible. even a lot of money as explanation cannot disparage that Spielberg had very bright moment there.
This movie is MASSIVELY let down by the kids. I wanted Dakota fanning to get fucking smushed in every scene, shes so irritating with her screaming and panic attacksl
@JeanLucPicardMan LOL, that was delibrate, Dakota Fanning was suppose to be annoying in the movie, take this scene for example, if Robbie and Rachael were asleep, this scene would be very boring.
This shot continues to blow my mind. I will never understand why so many people hate this film. If it's because of Cruise, that's really unfair. If it's the ending, blame H.G. Wells. It is action filmmaking at its most spetacular and one of the best blockbusters of our generation. People need to give it another chance.
It's amazing how many people are saying "Dakota needs to stop screaming and shut up!" like it's her fault, when the fact is her character is clearly neurotic. Yeah, it's annoying but that's the character, not the actress. That's what she was directed to do. To quote Chloe Moretz, "it's a movie, and it's called acting."
@Momiru159260 OOPS! I guess they didn't quite coordinate the steering with the movement. They probably filmed it with green screen background, and the rotation around the vehicle made it difficult to coordinate the scene. Surely they knew that viewer could stop and slow down the scene for mistakes and inconsistencies.
Favorite part of the movie, What do you guy's have against Dakota Fanning? yeah her screaming is a bit annoying in this movie and a bit over done but she's an awesome actress done more movies then you have so yeah lol
between 0:30" and 0:40", the camera goes in one side window of the car and comes out the other side!...before continuing to track them, go round the front, and finally launch into the air! how the hell did they do that???
hi i "was" SZ5061 before i deleted that account....but correction to myself is that it wasnt the West Shore Expressway....it was the Korean War Veteran Parkway/Richmond Parkway which is also on Staten Island lol
@itisian LIKE because if you saw the movie you would have known that like the aliens disabled every electronic device in the planet and like by a miracle this shitty van was the only vehicle that worked.......shhh
Really, i can't understand the process involved in making that scene. I see two sequences, one outside the vehicle on an actual road, and another around the car in a studio, and both mixed together with a shitload of editing. I can't think of anything else, still pretty intricate stuff.
Yea, Rachel sucks. She is the MOST ANNOYING creature ever to have graced the silver screen.
HOWEVER, this is an amazing scene. In fact, throughout this whole movie, Spielberg effortlessly makes us believe in his movie-making magic, his superb mastery of special effects seamlessly blended into the live action. FANTASTIC. Is it real? or is it a movie? You can't tell anymore. God DAMN this is some good movie making. However, Rachel and the Tim Robbins characters drive me nuts. I hate them!:-)LOL
@MCDEVVOMAN: ships/ cars /train / airplanes; spielberg needed to mention all this means of conveyance, because that shows, that each transport loosed its function. in "indipendence day" the people were able to run by car, in "war of the world" its much more depressiv, and its a feelin like in a cage
@Odin310: you nerd, if your city/ town is gonna be attacked; would you believe there are fuckin big tripods from jupiter, man??
'why isnt there any helicopters or airoplanes?' - that was bad because in a situation like that you wouldnt notice if there was any helicopters or aiproplanes and you sure as hell wouldnt care after finding out about the tripods!!
@BoxxyFan As you can see in the beginning of the scene, the back two windows are opened, they used a crane mounted on a car (maybe from Pursuit systems I dunno) and they were ready to shoot. But what I wonder how they made, is the part where the camera actually flows THROUGH the car...maybe they had prepared another mounted car and cought the camera inside with another crane and continued shooting with that second car with crane... I'm sure these things were really complex to create x)
He didn't see the attack or the machines. Would your first thought be, "Oh, it must be aliens attacking." Get real. The kid would certainly assume any "attack" mentioned by Cruise was by other humans.
@154thmedia - It's both. You can see the edits between what was shot practical and what was shot on the stage if you look closely. Spielberg will always try to use a passing wall, column or in this case, car, to hide his edits.
@154thmedia Half of it was on the sound stage and half on the actual highway. It's quite remarkable really what they have achieved here. Some very, VERY skilled people worked on this. BIG risk but BIG results! Amazing what they can do.
