@Entropy56 That's generally how most evolution occurs. You're making it as though Diatom is the species. A diatom evolving in to another diatom is akin to a bird evolving in to another bird. A second and separate science, molecular biology, confirmed the ancestral tree drawn by the fossil record. Then Anatomical Similarity, Vestigial Organs and Continental Drift again confirms the findings of evolution. That's five separate fields of science each substantiating with peer reviewed papers the fact that evolution happens. To say the science supporting evolution is in doubt is wrong.

Since we have seen one species descend from another many times in the lab and the field since 1859 we know that there is no barrier at the species level, and species is now the only real accepted category, all the others are considered artificial.
@kandtell Ring species are an example of what you are asking for. A creature arrives at a point at the side of a mountain range and migrate in both directions. Neighbors can interbreed but where they meet at the opposite side of the mountain range the genetic differences are too great to allow interbreeding. The Ensatina Salamanders of the Central Valley in California, the Greenish Warbler of the Himalayas and the Larus Gull as it circles the North Pole are examples of ring species.

@talons2112 The particular fossils the video is about are in the museum. Lots of them and they show the slow change from one species to another. The drawings are for explanation purposes because the creatures are very small. If you go to the University of Nebraska Museum you can view the actual transitional fossils. That’s evidence and available to the public.

algae =/= plants. Dawkins, should know that. One of the reasons I love Dawkins is that he doesn't oversimplify and isn't afraid to discuss subtleties, but he failed on this one.
@stramster1 Cladistics. Diatoms are on a completely separate branch of the tree of life than plants.
Having said that, there are quite a number of differencs. One is that their cell walls are not made out of cellulose like in plants, they are made out of silica. Another is that their chloroplasts are surrounded by four membranes, not just two (indicating multiple endosymbiosis events). They also use chlorophyll a and c, instead of chlorophyll a and b like plants do. Etc.

As I am unable to find any classification corrections that have determined the removal of Fungi and Algae I am led the the presumption that genetic mapping is the is the culprit.

Fungi are certainly not plants because they are heterotrophs (get food from their surroundings) instead of autotrophs (make their own). They also lack cellulose cell walls and instead have cell walls made out of chitin. If you want more info, I recommend wikipedia. The major facts are very well cited, so you can find the original papers that way.

I am 100% serious when I say that it is more accurate than many of my professors. My university professors are good and all, but they make a lot of mistakes, often gloss over details, or say things which can easily be misunderstood. Wikipedia does an excellent job addressing these issues. Not as good as peer-reviewed publications, but damn good indeed
@stramster1 Ok, last little rant. I find that a lot of the time, people who have an issue with wikipedia do so out of philosophical or abstract reasons. The fact is though, regardless of how easy it is to vandalize a page and how ignorant many of the editors are, the articles are very accurate. Google "Wikipedia as accurate as Britannica" for a study involving scientists comparing the two encyclopedias. That study was performed years ago. Wikipedia has greatly improved since then.

@gmcjetpilot I would like to know what evidence, if it were found, would convince you of evolution. If nothing could ever convince you, then there's nothing I can say. You continue to say that we have never seen one species turn into another. I will say for a final time, this is not what evolution means. Genetic changes accumulate to a point where two members of a previously established species can no longer interbreed to produce fertile offspring, at which point they are considered two separate species.
@gmcjetpilot This is not mere guesswork, it is a reasonable inference based on verifiable facts (I'm sorry I don't have any citations, but you can find many papers on a database such as ISI). Even if you do choose to reject such inferences (which would be reasonable, it is technically speculation after all) it doesn't mean that evolution itself is false. You seem intent on seeing experimental evidence which is admirable, but this is obviously impossible.
@gmcjetpilot However, we do have fossils and DNA. We did not evolve from chimpanzees. We share a common ancestor with chimps. The fossils of many ancient hominid species such as Homo erectus have been found and compared to one another as well as to humans and he morphological change over time can be easily seen. Forensic examination even shows how other early hominid species may have died out. It is likely based on fossil evidence that Homo sapiens killed them off.
@gmcjetpilot There offspring then also have the trait because they received that "mutated" gene from its parent. This happens without question. It can be seen all the time in bacteria. Drug resistance can be seen within a matter of days. You seem to accept this bit. Now it is only a small step to understanding the greater implication of this molecular genetic factual mechanism-evolution. Obviously we cannot watch evolution with our own eyes because it takes millions of years.
@gmcjetpilot Where you need to start is to study the central dogma of biology (DNA is transcribed to RNA is translated to proteins). Mutations (an "incorrect" base substitution) happen all the time and are generally not seen because of degeneracy in the genetic code. However, on occasion, they do produce a changed phenotype. Fewer times still, these phenotypes confer an advantage to the organism which increase the organisms fitness so they are more likely to survive and reproduce.

I on the other hand have taken a decade studying microbiology and molecular genetics. I DO understand how evolution works on a molecular level. A second and separate science, molecular biology, confirmed the ancestral tree drawn by the fossil record. Then Anatomical Similarity, Vestigial Organs and Continental Drift again confirms the findings of evolution. That's five separate fields of science each substantiating with peer reviewed papers the fact that evolution happens. To say the science supporting evolution is in doubt is wrong.

Check the results with a microscope. If the results are different you should be able to get it published in Nature or Science.

But my main questions for you are "can you give me a scientific definition of a kind?" and "what proof do you have that there exist insuperable barriers to Natural Selection preventing one kind being ultimately descended from another?".
Since we have seen one species descend from another many times in the lab and the field since 1859 we know that there is no barrier at the species level, and species is now the only real accepted category, all the others are considered artificial.

@kandtell Ring species are an example of what you are asking for. A creature arrives at a point at the side of a mountain range and migrate in both directions. Neighbors can interbreed but where they meet at the opposite side of the mountain range the genetic differences are too great to allow interbreeding. The Ensatina Salamanders of the Central Valley in California, the Greenish Warbler of the Himalayas and the Larus Gull as it circles the North Pole are examples of ring species.

The drawings are for explanation purposes because the creatures are very small. If you go to the University of Nebraska Museum you can view the actual transitional fossils. algae =/= plants. Dawkins, should know that. One of the reasons I love Dawkins is that he doesn't oversimplify and isn't afraid to discuss subtleties, but he failed on this one.

@stramster1 Cladistics. Diatoms are on a completely separate branch of the tree of life than plants.
Having said that, there are quite a number of differencs. One is that their cell walls are not made out of cellulose like in plants, they are made out of silica. Another is that their chloroplasts are surrounded by four membranes, not just two (indicating multiple endosymbiosis events). They also use chlorophyll a and c, instead of chlorophyll a and b like plants do. Etc.

You are completely correct in that Algae along with Fungi are no longer classed as plants.
As I am unable to find any classification corrections that have determined the removal of Fungi and Algae I am led the the presumption that genetic mapping is the is the culprit.
Can you confirm this and or reference a paper supporting this reclassification?

So I really don't know the whole history, which for me is like ancient history. You are correct that molecular sequencing tools have revolutionized taxonomy (which, as you learned it, is actually becoming obsolete. Fungi are certainly not plants because they are heterotrophs (get food from their surroundings) instead of autotrophs (make their own). They also lack cellulose cell walls and instead have cell walls made out of chitin. If you want more info, I recommend wikipedia. The major facts are very well cited, so you can find the original papers that way.

I am 100% serious when I say that it is more accurate than many of my professors. My university professors are good and all, but they make a lot of mistakes, often gloss over details, or say things which can easily be misunderstood. Wikipedia does an excellent job addressing these issues. Not as good as peer-reviewed publications, but damn good indeed

The fact is though, regardless of how easy it is to vandalize a page and how ignorant many of the editors are, the articles are very accurate. Google "Wikipedia as accurate as Britannica" for a study involving scientists comparing the two encyclopedias. That study was performed years ago. Wikipedia has greatly improved since then.

You continue to say that we have never seen one species turn into another. I will say for a final time, this is not what evolution means. Genetic changes accumulate to a point where two members of a previously established species can no longer interbreed to produce fertile offspring, at which point they are considered two separate species.

Even if you do choose to reject such inferences (which would be reasonable, it is technically speculation after all) it doesn't mean that evolution itself is false. You seem intent on seeing experimental evidence which is admirable, but this is obviously impossible.

@gmcjetpilot However, we do have fossils and DNA. We did not evolve from chimpanzees. We share a common ancestor with chimps. The fossils of many ancient hominid species such as Homo erectus have been found and compared to one another as well as to humans and he morphological change over time can be easily seen. Forensic examination even shows how other early hominid species may have died out. It is likely based on fossil evidence that Homo sapiens killed them off.

Drug resistance can be seen within a matter of days. You seem to accept this bit. @gmcjetpilot Where you need to start is to study the central dogma of biology (DNA is transcribed to RNA is translated to proteins). Mutations (an "incorrect" base substitution) happen all the time and are generally not seen because of degeneracy in the genetic code. However, on occasion, they do produce a changed phenotype. Fewer times still, these phenotypes confer an advantage to the organism which increase the organisms fitness so they are more likely to survive and reproduce.

If you have ever read a true scientific paper you'd know that they are very detailed and specific to a quite small area of interest. There is no "overall paper". What they do is CHANGE the genetic info to cause a change in protein function which causes phenotypes which may increase the fitness of the organism. For example, less evolved primates show group cohesion and punishment of members who break social mores. Humans however evolved the neocortex which allows us to rationalize our innate behavioral drives into what we call morals. I horizontal cross section of the brain shows our "old brain" and "new brain" neocortex.

@gmcjetpilot The most compelling evidence for evolution is genetic. We know from gene sequencing that random genetic mutation happens all the time. Most of these mutations have no affect, however on occasion they produce phenotypes which are advantageous to the individual so they can more easily survive and pass on that trait. Eventually the deviation within a species becomes so great that the two groups can no longer interbreed (this video shows a nice example).

Because they accept facts, unlike you. Mutation can and DOES duplicate, increasing genetic information. Most mutations ARE harmless. Using math, mathematicians estimate that it only takes the eye to evolve in less than 1 million years and that's with WEAK natural selection pressure.

Darwin himself (and many of his contemporaries) classified themselves as agnostic. However it amounts to the same thing. Most atheists like myself simply think that it is irrational to believe in a god, and therefore irrational to make life decisions based on such a belief.

This is easily seen in bacteria (because the generation time is so short; E. coli doubling time is 30 min.). Such pressures lead to speciation. Phenotypic advantages continue building up in a population until it can no longer produce fertile offspring with what used to be members of its species. This is the definition of a new species.
