Weird, the Nordiques moved to Colorado and became the Avalanche in 1995...So why are they still the Nordiques in the 1996 game?

Because the games come out the year beofre they are advertized for (For example, Madden 08 came out in 2007)

I'm aware of that, but the Avalanche started play in the 1995/1996 season, which is the update that's used for this game. The game came out at the same time that the 95/96 season began, so obviously they had to be aware of the Avalanche if they wanted an accurate and up to date game.

It would be the same if, say, an NFL team relocated to another city this year and started play in the new city this upcoming season, but "Madden 09" still has them playing in the previous city.

This was one of the latest move announcements ever. As of the NHL draft the unnamed 'Colorado franchise' did not have a nickname or logo yet.

Another reason that NHL '96 is a collectors item though...last video game year of the Quebec Nordiques and Winnipeg Jets.

because for all games they have the rosters set up for the previous year. So NHL 09 has the rosters from the 08 season originally. By the time this game was in post production im sure it wasnt even announced they were moving yet

@NostalgiaMF Back then most of the video games released were released the year before their actual number. Even today they still are. NHL 11 came out in 2010, Madden 2012 will come out in 2011. It's got alot to do with the fact that the season may start in say 1995, but will end in 1996.

@NostalgiaMF games like this, have a date for example NHL 96, but the game is actually based of the 1994-1995 season. So NHL 12 is based of the 2010-2011 season.
