To me it doesnt look like the ball "jumped" it looked to me like it slipped up. Gravity can be funny like that, how sometimes things which dont move and aren't disturbed just fall. When he pushed the number 2 ball down the 23 moved itself. It actually seemed to spin weirdly as if some kind of computer trick when it was just gravity and physics. @Zoom15000 I'm not sure the video maker understands the concept of "spherical objects not sitting flush in rectangular chambers". this dumbass is trying to be smart posting a video to try and work out how he did it. derren brown is an illusionist but he is also a psychologist and has a great understanding of how different words can influence people he cant read peoples minds but he can read their facial expressions and work out what they are thinking

Thanks for the vid. The think that really annoyed me with this was the simple split screen technique that's been around for decades. 2 Phoebes in Friends (1990s) - Split screen. 2 Michael Knights in Knight Rider (80s) - split screen. As soon as you saw a very clear and obvious distinction of screen zones, and no audience you KNEW it was poxy bloody split screen ! I never expected him to predict the numbers but I DID expect a new and innovative way of doing it !
If the camera goes back to live on 23 then he still would have had to have wrote on 3 more balls. There were 3 more balls being called out live as the camera swicthed back.
They weren't being called out live. They have already been drawn out of the machine, they were just listing them in ascending order. Whilst Derren was summing up the numbers and writing them down on his placard the assistant was switching in the balls in ascending order, no doubt working very quickly hence the mistake with the end and the last ball. He probably ran out of time to fix it and had to leg it off the camera area.
@SpongemonkeyUK The balls were being called out live. You could flip through both channels. Im just saying if the camera goes back to live when the ball rises then there were still 3 more balls being called out live.
The balls already had been called out live. Once the balls are drawn then they put them into ascending order. That's how the national lottery do it. That's what is happening in the clip. He is writing down the numbers in ascending order also. Thus giving his assistant time to switch the balls in.
The lottery episode was some of his worst stuff, despite being entertaining. The fact that he made a show out of a silly camera trick - one that I'm not complaining about - is just a waste of an hour. Unlike some of his stuff on Trick of the Mind for instance, or in stuff like the Heist, where he employs more interesting and actually genuine stuff such as subliminal suggestion/psychology etc, this was just underwhelming.
Who really cares how he did it? It obviously had to be some sort of camera trick as there is no possible way of predicting a random number. Why waste time trying to figure out the exact details of the camera trick?
oh yeah one last thing, you explain something in your video god knows what i got lost after the first minute but you kept going on and on and it sounded to me like you had discovered the cure for aids and then you said it points clearly to a split screen, it never to me, i think what your beef is, is your girlfriend likes what derren does with his balls and you get jealous and say his balls are magic
do you do sit in your room all day rewinding that video, clenching your fist because no one will hear you out, what does it matter to you seriously why have you spent so much of your life tryin to figure it out, let it go, in the words of robin williams in the film good will hunting " its not your fault its not your fault " do you really want to know how he did it, well hes that guy that announces the numbers as they come out and so he got the script of the numbers half an hour b4
@derrenexposed of cause it was a bullsh*t explanation he even said it was. he even felt bad about giving that awful explanation. all im saying is at least he barely uses camera tricks and doesn't use stooges unlike criss angel and david balne who use both as much as they can.
but over all i enjoyed your video on how it was done good work on figuring it out mate.
Apart from there being no NLP involved (it doesn't really work anyway), is it not patently obvious that if someone could actually predict the outcome of the National Lottery they would have done so anonimously rather than have wasted their entire life setting up a TV career to prove that they could have won it and then didn't, just for entertainment purposes? It's a trick, but done with with more benevolent spirit than you're showing. Get over it - expose some actual frauds.
derren brown always claims hes NOT a psychic. all his videos, books, etc says he uses tricks n misdirection so wat is this video trying to prove??? kinda pointless
only cretins thought it wasn't a trick and only half-wits assume people other then cretins thought it wasn't a trick. the real mystery is how you can be such a cretinous half-wit.
he is an illusionist. hence why he does things like this to fool people so why dedicate your time to make a video about it? in my opinion its just abit of fun? if for instance he was to geuinely accurately predict numbers, he wouldnt have a tv show and we'd know him as a man who wins millions every week............
"to try to convince us that he has extraordinary powers of influence, mind-reading abilities and the like."... He Never Claims To Have These 'Powers'. At The Begining Of Every Show Or Performance He Admits To Everyone That He Uses Only Psychology, Showmanship etc. Then While Performing He Explains What Aspect Of Physchology Mediums Use To Make People Think That They Are Contacting The Dead And What Not. Other Than This, That Is A Rather Good Explaination. And Proof That You Need To Get Out More.
people here are not understanding derrenexposed video! He's not taking of DB's credits or anything. He's showing that the guy used a camera trick on this show. That's it. He down the discription says that DB is a good... and stuff. So get a life, you guys!
This explanation is sound but you place too much emphasis on NLP. Actually ANY emphasis on NLP is too much. He’s not using NLP (since neither he nor anyone else has any need of such hokum), instead he employs the same distractions that magicians have used since
His "bullshit' explanations are all for our entertainment. Would you really watch a show that simply told you how he did it and took the mystery out of the whole idea. No. So you can make smug comments on how he's "bullshiting' to us but at the end of the day thats why we watch him, for mystery and too make us think. Besides I don't see you up there on live television.
Just for your information, NLP is complete batshit, and Derren knows this. He does not use it. The NLP people have a nasty habit of copying other peoples methods, and then referring to those same people as using NLP.
Well you obviously have a lot of time on your hands, Derren is still a complete legend however he did this, cant you just keep YOUR bullshit explainations to yourself?
jfyi, Derren Brown is a hardcore *skeptic* who staunchly denies the existence of psychic abilities. He readily admits that he is merely performing tricks. He's very good.
Either way dude, alot of people fell for it, hes doing his job and getting paid because hes good at it, why dont you do yours and get the fuck off the internet when your done slating people
for the rest of you who like derren brown like myself, who have seen him live
I watched his show "Svengali". No camera tricks, I was in the stalls near the front so I could see well. And like many people before me have said he doesn't use camera trickery! Oh, and cool! He can juggle with one hand!
Actually, explanation is a load of 'bullshit' as you like to call it. Derren always says that he doesn't use camera tricks and his LIVE STAGE SHOWS prove it. If your so convinced that derren uses camera tricks explain 'Enigma' when derren brought out a box chose someone at random and deep inside was a coin with a very personal message to that person. How is that a trick? Derren had said that he'd been studying he lottery for over a year so actually think about stuff before jumping to conclusions
I don't see the point in trying to prove him wrong -__- Maybe he did predict it maybe he didn't but just enjoy the show anyway. And being a cocky show off trying to prove him wrong and look like a genius, just makes you look like an asshole.
The best way to make a prediction is after the event, for sure. "I made a prediction, but lets just see the event it predicted BEFORE I tell you what I predicted actually..." The ancient Greeks perfected the technique. Charlatans and stage magicians learned the lesson well.
I would also like to note that the camera used for the main shot would have to be a "superHD" camera, bascially 4+ HD cameras spliced together so they could have extra room for the "software" camera shake.
It's not camera movement, it is digital. Basically a still camera and a "software camera" moving, notice how mechanical and non organic the pans are, also it does stay perfectly still for a few seconds, which is impossible to do by hand. Good catch on the misplaced ball too.
i think the point of this is the fact that beings who have actually taken the work out to master their mind, are being discredited by stuff like this. Thats what i get out of it.
the thing i dont understand is that Derren Brown NEVER claims to be psychic/mind reader/magician ect. he is infact a mentalist who uses misdirection and subliminal ques to trick his volunteers into thinking the same thing he is. so why all this hatred of him? we all know everything he does is clever tricks. he knows we know, and he makes a point of telling us constantly that its all about perception and misdirection, nothing to do with psychic ability. so why berate him. its great entertainment!
someone with common-sense i was thinking the same thing..the time you take to sit and hate on him put it in work . how can you blast a person that aint lieing :/ confusing stuff
the point here is that Derrenexposed is not saying anything against DB's skills and/or moral integrity. He is just pointing out with this vid that DB himself does use camera trick, beyond mind/NLP/misdirection tricks.
So, beyong sounding jealeous to others, you sound a bit dumb to me as well.
Mr plumblord, during this special there was no live audience as they might have been able to see his prediction then send this information onto a third party. Derren's explanation not mine.
And to the apparent exposer If you are correct then that leaves the stage hand 45 seconds (Ish) to collect and replace the blank balls with 6 completely random ones in a numerical order which is a feat of itself. Finally to my knowledge at no point did Derren or C4 say it was using hand held cameras.
I agree with Mr. Plumblord. Derren Brown has never claimed to have actual 'powers'. In fact, he is staunchly opposed to those who misuse their skills as an illusionist/magician to trick people into believing that they have some kind of 'God given' or 'psychic' power. He does what he does to entertain and also to educate (such as his 'Miracles for Sale' documentary which aired tonight which is a good example of his contempt for those who use the art of illusion to defraud others).
Okay hold on a second, can everyone just please thumb this up if I'm correct. So half the screen was live... Half wasn't. But there was an audience wasn't there? Are you saying you misdirected the whole audience to look at him whilst somebody swapped the balls?
Can somebody please explain when derren has ever said anything about him doing magic. He says its tricks and the power of suggestibility. Watch him live, what he does is so clever, it's funny, scary and amazing to watch.
If he could really predict the lottery He shud of bough a Ticket and then showed us The winning numbers that way!!! Then we wud never hear from him again CUZ HE'S RICH NOW
His last lines after the show were "It was all just a trick, good night"
Its a magic trick, entertainment.
Most logical people will know its a trick, and so what?
I agree with your effort to figure out how it was done, but your criticism of him claiming to actually "predict" in a bad light, in that it annoys you, is just pathetic.
You say that the left ball (#39) raises when he says 23 which would indicate the "stagehand" already but ball 39 in place before it was read out. Also if they were all aligned at the beginning don't you think they would use the exact same type of balls to replace, therefore they should be the same size and fit the same? Obviously Derren didn't really predict the lottery numbers or he would win every week but I don't think your explanation is right.
"you have to *prerecord* the same scene with EXACTLY the same camera movement" (* = my emphasis).
You don't. You can record each half with locked-still cameras and then add the 'movement' onto the composite 'live' picture afterwards with an extremely simple computer generated wobble effect.
STs and Amigas could perform realtime screen shake on a 420i picture back in the late 80s, so I'm sure that even cash-strapped Channel 4 could afford a PC capable of doing the same (or better) nowadays.
Wow you must have alot of spare time to work all that out! Very good though. By the way even if Derren used camera tricks in this one, he doesn't use it for everything, there is some predictions he actually does.
It makes me laugh when people like you think you understand the mind of Derren Brown. I personally doubt your theory on how he did it as many others have said. Here, try this for something DB has said. "I am not a psychic. I do not believe in anyway I can read your mind. I am going to trick you tonight" Which fits your argument but it proves that he doesn't lie. He has never lied so why lie about camera trickery? He even tells you to believe what you like, so why would he bother to disprove you?
Good vid dude but just 1 thing I noticed after my own investigation a while ago. You got the lottery advert explanation wrong, it's not CG ball, it's a CG split on his body. the right side (his left) and head is Derrens but the rest is someone else who I'm guessing is a hell of a juggler. Look carefully at the way his suit moves on both sides... you'll see once you realise it's quite obvious. The rest is spot on though dude :)
If he was not allowed to show numbers before BBC, the short clip he taped with bunch of guys trying to predict numbers could be shown it wasn't live he could tell it to them. But he just run away with "combination"
the thing is he dosent claim to be si-kick he says other and other on every episode what 5 things he is, and one is misdirection. I still think he is amazing at what he does, as he has tricked many people with the lottery prediction and made them think it was real.
seriously, if this what you do to pass time you must lead a sad life. To believe anything you have just posted on this video you must be stupid. As well as trying to disprove somebody as clever as derren must make you even stupider, if you actually spent time to do your research , no this wasn't fake, it is called mathematics, and was all figured using statistics. Stop wasting your life with your silly theorys and do something rather than trying to piss on other peoples bonfires.
let me poke a huge hole in your theory lol, you basically said it was all fake due to that ball jump... the ball is in mid air becuase one of them has to be he had a box to put them in just to keep them on the stand, in order etc but the box was slightly smaller than what all the balls needed so one generally was elevated slightly lol im not saying he did predict it but this is pretty weak evidence
If it was 'real' Derren Brown would never be able to show us the predicted numbers before the show, because of legal reasons, Also it's a trick, he has never said it's real. Also his said many times that his explanation of him guessing the lottery numbers was a lie and that he did it another way.
If any of you ever watch 'derren brown, behind the mischief' the man tell us that of all the tricks he has done, this was the one he was most unhappy with.
It seems like Derren really fucked you Brits up with this trick. A TRICK - get it? What's wrong with you people? The guy doesn't claim supernatural powers. That's the whole point of what he does. Why do you seem so pissed at him in these lottery video posts?
Mate, i wasnt born yeasterday. You are using NLP on us in your video. The capital letters, the definite commanding statements. I cant even see the ball moving, im just expecting it to move because you tell us to. You may be right about Derren's trick, but your not fooling me
a few things that are in our explanation that don't add up. The stuff you say is NLP isn't NLP. Also I can guarantee that a split camera trick wouldn't work live. I'm not saying he can predict the lottery but this isn't how he did it. Also the jumping ball. Put a ping pong ball and squeeze the bottom half of it. A minimal amount of pressure will force it to "jump."
Surely if there was a split screen then all of the stuff about the ball moving and camera stopping shaking etc are nothing to do with the trick - as the cut back to live footage would have had to be after the last number was read out, or they wouldn't have been able to switch all the numbers because they wouldn't actually know what they are all going to be?!
This guy is a hater, he can't stand that he was amazed and tried to say about that ball that won't go down, thats maybe because all you need to do is see the number not just look at the height between them all. These revealers are sad little haters who can't stand that Derren Brown is amazing at his job.
It's not NLP misdirection isn't an NLP technique and derren brown isn't a big believer when it comes to NLP either. He thinks and I agree with him that some of the NLP techniques and what NLP claims are a bit far fetched although some have an element of truth. Even one of the founders of NLP agreed some of it was exaggerated. Well there's no doubt that this trick is great it got you obsessing over it clearly :)
If it's split-screen trickery, they must have gotten some genius to do the trickery! The camera is unsteady while the ball rises. This unsteadiness also applies to the side of the screen where he is standing. In order to overlay half the picture when there is camera movement, you have to prerecord the same scene with EXACTLY the same camera movement and timing (impossible with the random, unsteadiness)! If it is not EXACT, you can see the differences in movement, which are not seen here.
@WeSoPringles Did i say you couldn't?? I said you would have to have the exact same camera movement/shake/timing to to a split screen without being able to notice the differences between one side and the other. Watch how they make movies with one actor playing multiple characters in the same shot...they use a computer controlled, motorized camera system that moves along a track. It's impossible to do it by carrying the camera. The scene would not overlay exactly.
@WeSoPringles And if your saying they put in fake camera shake live, you are 1 step below retarded! Sure they can put camera shake in live, but they can't match the exact camera shake/movement of the live broadcast with the other half of the "split-screen". I don't think you are capable of understanding that concept......
@cap10moman you say you can't see the differences in movement, but when he announced the numbers, after he says oooooohh, and on the three of twenty three- the leftmost ball moves up slightly, proving it IS split screen trickery
@cap10moman If you zoom in on the picture in an after-effects program you can make it look like the camera was shaking when it was actually not. In this way you can apply the same shaking to both sides of the screen. I'm not saying he used split screen, but he could have.
@cap10moman you can add camera effects like shaking after though- by zooming in very slightly, and panning the view up down, etc just a little bit, you can make a still camera seem like it's shaking.
@cap10moman Artificial camerashaking and prerecorded cameracoreografy are both excisting, and could both be aplied to a live recording with splitscreen. Cyriak and captain dissillution both explain this thing.
@cap10moman Who says it's random unsteadiness? they have computer controlled cameras they use for moving split screen shots, where the camera will precisely duplicate the shot, if you've ever seen any tv programme where they have a character meet thier twin or double or whatever, it's not just static shots where you see the actor twice, they have it in shots that move a lot more than this.
I totally agree with gadget133 . The fact that you made this video sort of prooves that Derren's TRICK succeeded in outstanding you to the point where you felt you had to analyse it and create a video displaying your theories.
Also, you should note that Derren saying 'OOOOHHHHH' is not 'A classic NLP technique' Its misdirection, perhaps... but certainly not NLP, as it doesnt use any specific linguistic techniques in order to force a change in the way you observe the screen.
You'd seem less of a retard if you didn't upload the videos from a random gameboy you found in a charity shop.
Even then you'd still be a retard

The balls already had been called out live. Once the balls are drawn then they put them into ascending order. That's how the national lottery do it. That's what is happening in the clip. He is writing down the numbers in ascending order also. Thus giving his assistant time to switch the balls in.
SpongemonkeyUK 2 months ago
Unless he could show us the numbers BEFORE the lottery balls start rolling out...
mrdx21 3 months ago
The lottery episode was some of his worst stuff, despite being entertaining. The fact that he made a show out of a silly camera trick - one that I'm not complaining about - is just a waste of an hour. Unlike some of his stuff on Trick of the Mind for instance, or in stuff like the Heist, where he employs more interesting and actually genuine stuff such as subliminal suggestion/psychology etc, this was just underwhelming.

but over all i enjoyed your video on how it was done good work on figuring it out mate.

The best way to make a prediction is after the event, for sure. "I made a prediction, but lets just see the event it predicted BEFORE I tell you what I predicted actually..." The ancient Greeks perfected the technique. Charlatans and stage magicians learned the lesson well.

I would also like to note that the camera used for the main shot would have to be a "superHD" camera, bascially 4+ HD cameras spliced together so they could have extra room for the "software" camera shake.
thewakz 7 months ago
It's not camera movement, it is digital. Basically a still camera and a "software camera" moving, notice how mechanical and non organic the pans are, also it does stay perfectly still for a few seconds, which is impossible to do by hand. Good catch on the misplaced ball too.

DJSanders23 9 months ago
I agree with Mr. Plumblord. Derren Brown has never claimed to have actual 'powers'. In fact, he is staunchly opposed to those who misuse their skills as an illusionist/magician to trick people into believing that they have some kind of 'God given' or 'psychic' power. He does what he does to entertain and also to educate (such as his 'Miracles for Sale' documentary which aired tonight which is a good example of his contempt for those who use the art of illusion to defraud others).

You say that the left ball (#39) raises when he says 23 which would indicate the "stagehand" already but ball 39 in place before it was read out. Also if they were all aligned at the beginning don't you think they would use the exact same type of balls to replace, therefore they should be the same size and fit the same? Obviously Derren didn't really predict the lottery numbers or he would win every week but I don't think your explanation is right.
deejaydoubleyoo 10 months ago
"you have to *prerecord* the same scene with EXACTLY the same camera movement" (* = my emphasis).
You don't. You can record each half with locked-still cameras and then add the 'movement' onto the composite 'live' picture afterwards with an extremely simple computer generated wobble effect.
STs and Amigas could perform realtime screen shake on a 420i picture back in the late 80s, so I'm sure that even cash-strapped Channel 4 could afford a PC capable of doing the same (or better) nowadays.
spankmonkey73 10 months ago
Wow you must have alot of spare time to work all that out! Very good though. By the way even if Derren used camera tricks in this one, he doesn't use it for everything, there is some predictions he actually does.
MovieMakerInTheMakin 10 months ago

The rest is spot on though dude :)

let me poke a huge hole in your theory lol, you basically said it was all fake due to that ball jump... the ball is in mid air becuase one of them has to be he had a box to put them in just to keep them on the stand, in order etc but the box was slightly smaller than what all the balls needed so one generally was elevated slightly lol im not saying he did predict it but this is pretty weak evidence

Mate, i wasnt born yeasterday. You are using NLP on us in your video. The capital letters, the definite commanding statements. I cant even see the ball moving, im just expecting it to move because you tell us to. You may be right about Derren's trick, but your not fooling me
wylear 1 year ago
a few things that are in our explanation that don't add up.

Surely if there was a split screen then all of the stuff about the ball moving and camera stopping shaking etc are nothing to do with the trick - as the cut back to live footage would have had to be after the last number was read out, or they wouldn't have been able to switch all the numbers because they wouldn't actually know what they are all going to be?!
nickb512 1 year ago 2
This guy is a hater, he can't stand that he was amazed and tried to say about that ball that won't go down, thats maybe because all you need to do is see the number not just look at the height between them all. I changed the channel like derren said. The footage on the TV screen and the footage being shown on the BBC was different.
ckolonko 1 year ago
Not to be a troll, but I'm not even sure where to start.
1) If the ball moved as the result of the shots switching, the movement would be SUDDEN, not incremental and smooth.
2) The ball movement occurs BEFORE the pause in camera movement.
3) If the camera movement were added digitally (as it would certainly have to be) there would be no NEED for a pause anyway.
4) The camera isn't "handheld" per say, the movements shown are consistent with those of a steadycam rig.
5) No.

If it is not EXACT, you can see the differences in movement, which are not seen here.
cap10moman 1 year ago 16
@cap10moman you're dumb. you can put in fake camera shake live.
watch?v=rqAt2akPHJ8
WeSoPringles 1 year ago
@WeSoPringles Did i say you couldn't?? I said you would have to have the exact same camera movement/shake/timing to to a split screen without being able to notice the differences between one side and the other. Watch how they make movies with one actor playing multiple characters in the same shot...they use a computer controlled, motorized camera system that moves along a track. It's impossible to do it by carrying the camera. The scene would not overlay exactly.
cap10moman 1 year ago
@WeSoPringles And if your saying they put in fake camera shake live, you are 1 step below retarded! Sure they can put camera shake in live, but they can't match the exact camera shake/movement of the live broadcast with the other half of the "split-screen". I don't think you are capable of understanding that concept......

littlelaurence 10 months ago
@cap10moman you say you can't see the differences in movement, but when he announced the numbers, after he says oooooohh, and on the three of twenty three- the leftmost ball moves up slightly, proving it IS split screen trickery
mcrchie 9 months ago
@cap10moman If you zoom in on the picture in an after-effects program you can make it look like the camera was shaking when it was actually not. In this way you can apply the same shaking to both sides of the screen. I'm not saying he used split screen, but he could have.
Gobob789 9 months ago
@cap10moman you can add camera effects like shaking after though- by zooming in very slightly, and panning the view up down, etc just a little bit, you can make a still camera seem like it's shaking.
vgjj777 6 months ago
@cap10moman Artificial camerashaking and prerecorded cameracoreografy are both excisting, and could both be aplied to a live recording with splitscreen. Cyriak and captain dissillution both explain this thing.
bb0ysmiley 6 months ago
@cap10moman Who says it's random unsteadiness? they have computer controlled cameras they use for moving split screen shots, where the camera will precisely duplicate the shot, if you've ever seen any tv programme where they have a character meet thier twin or double or whatever, it's not just static shots where you see the actor twice, they have it in shots that move a lot more than this.
OktoberSunset 6 months ago
@cap10moman It wasnt random, unsteadiness. The rig that the camera sits on will follow the exact same route 100 times. It movements are programmed.
billbert101 5 months ago
I totally agree with gadget133 . The fact that you made this video sort of prooves that Derren's TRICK succeeded in outstanding you to the point where you felt you had to analyse it and create a video displaying your theories.
Also, you should note that Derren saying 'OOOOHHHHH' is not 'A classic NLP technique' Its misdirection, perhaps... but certainly not NLP, as it doesnt use any specific linguistic techniques in order to force a change in the way you observe the screen.
