  • I believe you but would still like to see sources cited that show that we throw away 99% of stuff within 6 months on average.

  • @jennNjackNY I'm going to assume that some of this is containers and packaging and food gone bad or not wanted and not mostly the actual things.

  • 67 dislikers threw out at least 3 of their old iPhones for new ones in the past 3 years.

  • I agree with this video, but 3000 ads a day? That seems like a bit of a stretch. Maybe if you only sat in front of a TV all day, lol.

  • @SevenFootPelican well now this happens through the internet on our computers and phones. I totally believe the 3000 ads in that regard.

  • Thank you very much for the share. You have some great uploads, keep it up!

  • well done! Check-out "Addicted to Money" Documentary on you tube and TV

  • I was believing her until she mentioned 9/11 and WW2. Now I just think she's a ranting conspiracist.

  • @BlueMonkey154 Bush made a public announcement after 9/11 telling citizens to shop. I guess you where to young to remember that.

  • Honestly, this makes me cry!

  • Bush first asked Americans to 1) Pray; 2) unite for justice and peace; and 3) defend freedom.

Good news -- Fact checking consumes very few resources.

  • @dmackintx According to Time magazine, GW Bush states "I ask you to live your lives and hug your children... I ask your continued participation and confidence in the American economy"

Fact checking RELIABLE sources takes wisdom.

  • TIME magazine initiated the "Go shopping" distortion and perpetuated it.

Please be sure to check the reliable primary sources which are easy enough to find with a quick search.

  • I don't understand why people get to the point where they stay in a tent during the winter to get discounts on black Friday or live every day of their lives wondering when the next iPhone will come out... then end up killing someone because they can't even put it down to drive. I'll stick to my blue jeans and t-shirts that never go out of style, and when something breaks I'll fix it before I throw it into the land fill and buy another Chinese piece of crap to replace it.

  • I think its clear we have a consumption addiction but how to we wean ourselves without creating mass unemployment and general misery. Part of it is changing mindsets so keep on doing what you are doing, but more on sustainable solutions too please.

  • Your video is useful about consumption info. thank you.

  • This video is great!

  • I like this video.

  • Your video is very fun.

  • Thank you for sharing.

  • TYLER DURDEN FOR 2012!!!!

  • this video looks like its well done, but in fact, the arbitrary facts and definitions put together doesn't make it right.A constant increase in the momentum of consumption is a vital tool that increases productivity in-order to keep aggregate demand from ceasing or even declining, preventing our economy from a fierce recession by which if that happened unemployment rates and layoffs spikes to the peak leaving us with an under performing labor market. So no thanks. PEOPLE KEEP ON BUYING !!

  • consumption is not a bad thing. even breathing is consuming, in a way.

the problem starts when we ritually centre consumption as the core of our value systems, our identity and our entire life. and that's what this video is talking about. saying 'there is nothing wrong with consumption' is totally irrelevant here.

our culture is wrecking the planet, and that is wrong, and no-one can deny it.

  • She clearly does not understand Computers.

  • lÓl_ï_fÊÊl_sø_lÕNÉly_tòÐàY

  • Oh Gosh!!. I think about this everyday. 4 real. Ive just decided that i wont even be a part of this world.

  • This video is awesome. It's been around a lot, also as an email, and it should. Scary statistics, hopefully they're real. And if you are into consumerism commentary and sarcasm, I like the youtube channel "StillUsing". They're looking for other users who, instead of buying the latest technology, are happy to keep using older ones, for the lousy (uh, not!) reason that they still work.

They're hoping for some real finds: typewriter, tape recorder, etc.

  • Of course this won't keep people from consuming!

This terrifying issue of consumption you keep trying to scare people with actually runs our business' and our economy and keeps the pay checks coming into your pocket every week.

And just because Consumption has become a greater way of life, don't ever say that the human race doesn't value Justice, or Sustainability or Hope...

Don't ever imply that consuming makes us 'evil' in some kind of way.

  • Story of Stuff is great. This should be on Ted.com!

  • For those of you who recognize how we are destroying our very planet I advise watching Zeitgeist: Moving Forward, available on youtube, that has everything to do with what is discussed here and offers a viable solution.

  • More on this issue on "overconsumpulation"

  • Planned Obsolescence = as horrifying as it is true

  • ''as our counterparts in Europe'' made me feel WIN because i live in Europe

  • sad thing is that videos like this won´t keep ppl from consuming ... ... it´s good .. but the ad-brainwashing is stronger ....

  • I like this video. Thank you for your sharing. Hope to see next your video.

  • Worthless environmentalist drivel. Probably, like Obama, none of these people have done anything producitve in their lives. Sit around and whine about the producers, while all the while being a useless parasite. If you need something, buy it, if not don't, but how dare you try to tell me how to live my life.

  • thats for breaking up the chapters and sharing them! I wanted to share this particular chapter w/ someone

  • Wrong, the CPU socket, graphics cards, bus speeds, hard disk capacities, ports, etc. Their is an unavoidable consumption of computers as it would be completely in practical to for say use a MSDOS machine today. Their is a valid secondary meaning other then making money when consuming computers in the form of improving technology.

  • @MSCompuServ of course there is difference and advancement from a computer 10 years ago. but what about all the different computers from the same year. Is there anything important a December computer can do that the January computer couldn't?

  • Thank you. Your video is great.

  • Uhh ...the internet represent a lot of the trends of a huge consumerism tool!

  • hey! who are you? i think im in love ... jkjk but seriously i tried to tell my friends things similar to this and they laffed at me aand said i was crazy haha i knew i was right!

  • >

    > Commie Crap

    >

  • Wish more could see thru subtle bias used 2sway viewer2agree w/their solution, which isn't necessarily the best answer. &They're using these vids IN SCHOOLS NOW! Not 2rain on any1, but take closer look@ how their solution 2 the proposed prob has elements VERY comparable 2communism.Comm looks good on paper/n theory&they not gonna say they r cuz if did=you'd think "evil!" Study communism a bit. Originators of it thot it was great @ 1st! We all agree w/the prob being REAL. But need better answers!

  • This has nothing to do with Socialism. What a stupid notion. This has to do with responsible saving and spending. Gee, I wonder if Obalozer could learn a lesson there? He's the biggest Socialist on the planet and he spends our money like water.

  • She's not suggesting socialism, she's suggesting stewardship and responsibility.

Imagine GM cars built to last... Imagine the fashionistas out of work and having to find a real job... Imagine keeping the same cell phone for more than a year... not bad stuff!

  • OOOHH!!! I know how we can keep on living like this!

We can keep on feeding off of the Chinese psuedo-communist government which exploits its proletarians.

  • SOCIALISM = FAIL = ANNIE LEONARD.

  • I can't believe the comments of all these stupid brainwashed Americans!

After seeing the whole program I was curious to read from people whose eyes had been opened. How naive of me!!

Just as religious people will not be persuaded by hard facts and science, brainwashed-to-consume people will not be convinced by reason.

It'll take generations to turn back the tide.

  • @untropezon go live in iraq then

  • This movie is a bit of a joke and is directed towards wanna be politicos. There are so many hole in this movie, yet it must be so convincing to the young.

  • Sadly, most Americans chose to bury their heads in the sand rather than face the truth about what we are doing to our planet.

  • This lady is WRONG. Start watching this video at 30 seconds and see about the Bush thing! Just watch Lee's critiques and see how factually incorrect she is (and this is all coming from someone who values taking care of the planet, too) /watch?v=AgLrZc7cws8&feature=channel

  • I love it when anti-capitalist propaganda is manufactured, sold, and distributed FOR PROFIT in a capitalist society so that it's producers can line their pockets at the expense of the hard-working citizens. The hypocrisy is overwhelming.

  • @collins1188 yet it's free on youtube. fuckin moron.

  • @sndd0138 This anti-capitalist video was filmed, produced, and sold in a capitalist economy for profit. THE END DOUCHE BAG. YOU FUCKING LOSE!

  • Most of this is really good, but both statements she makes about computers are incorrect. There are many components that become obsolete, most can be replaced, and frankly, they can be replaced with surprising ease and fluidity.

  • @ThankelCA She's talking about when manufacturers upgrade their CPU socket type, and no, most of this is utter trash.

  • First, all of those attacking this woman are feeble-minded, who is she to the story? Second, for those that said we need to buy stuff to get out of the economic crisis, this is only true in Capitalist economies. Third, the only way we dragged ourselves out of the Depression was with massive government spending due to war, this is not what we want or need. It takes longer for the effects of government spending because by the time it starts, we want to horde our money. Econ202 people!! Read a book

  • So true. If you don't believe her read the book called "Gone Tomorrow The hidden life of garbage". ( found a copy at my local library)

  • jesus christ... when does the carebearing shit stop? you HAVE to buy stuff to get out of the economical crisis. and bush didnt tell anyone to shop. he wanted to go to war.

  • money and consumption are the ultimate reward and therefore the main impulse and justification for our work. i don't think that her respectable endeavours can nullify this principle.

  • Sounds like these guys are actually trying to support fashion.

  • I'm sorry that i don't keep my scratch paper for 6 months, next time, ill besure to keep it for the full 6 months

  • Bush told us to go to war...

  • I don't believe the 1% figure, I bet it's much higher but your point is on target. Otherwise, Well done, and don't forget that the almighty credit card also plays a part in it. All high schools and colleges should have required courses teaching young people how to avoid credit cards, they really are a scam. The people who control the money that rich people save in banks, want to enslave people to debt as we buy all this crap that we really don't need.

  • I came, I saw, I bought. The best thing of this whole system is the fact that people have more materials, and (pause for a LOL on this one) don't own much of it. ROFLOL. So the new $1000 dollar laptop, $30,000 car and $190,000 home is all yours right.

  • So, this condescending heifer is berating us for being such horrible people for buying things that we like and doing what we want, while talking about how ads tell us that we suck? Has she EVER considered the fact that we work multiple jobs because of the sheer amount of taxes that are imposed on us as well as the inflation of prices caused by government regulation of the economy? This woman is friggin' delusional.

  • Wonderful work :)

    Its time to think ....

  • long live cuba

  • Yeah right - just a tiny little piece at the corner of the computer changes. What if you have no corners? How stupid. My mother's laptop is 8 years old. PC can be upgraded constantly and yes you can replace parts - they make them compatible. However people buy new stuff because it's usually better. If you want you can buy a 10$ computer and run DOS on it where you can just read text. Your choice. And the things that are made for one use are hygenic helping us to be in better health.

  • She may be a little loose with the facts

But she is hitting the bulls-eye with every shot!

And I'd bet this woman wouldn't even waste spit on the likes of AGore

  • Yeah ... is that Al Gore's wife? Guess who does all the shopping??? Women. Take away all credit cards from women, make them stay in the home and raise the kids and keep the house clean. Take away their cars and cell phones. "Shopping will drop by 99% Problem Solved!

  • Shut up bish

  • Check the critic that was made about the lies in this video

  • damn one thing is for sure this laidy does not know anything about computers :P

  • lol! I thought that was hilarious too.

  • Nation of 'consumers'?

Nation of brain-dead, moronic, selfish, greedy, shallow, loveless, materialistic excuses for a lifeform.

  • and the thing about fashion. Total crap. Fashion changes each year because people find looking at the same clothes each year dull. So why not change them?

Fashion has been around for hundreds of years before today's economy was around so you can't say this about those fat heels. Fashion has always rotated.

  • @kotapaka I think your post just validated her point

  • You are free to think whatever you want. It doesn't mean you are thinking the correct way.

  • lol I believed your series until this part. I think you are one of those movies that mixes real facts with claims that we can't check so it looks real and trustworthy.

Anyway lol @ the computer part. There isn't a small part that changes each year. That's BS. Computer parts are made compatible so that you can upgrade when new stuff comes out. I have an 8 yr old laptop which is still working.

lol how wrong was that computer thing - unbelievable. There is also old hardware support OS's.

  • Nahh, this is generally true.

  • 1:06 1% !!! thats insanely impossible!!!

99% trashed within 6 mos?!?!?! maybe if that "stuff" is food + we gotta shit it out @ some point!!! we're not freaking robots! ppl dont have that much energy, time or $ for that!!! this is crazy shit!!

  • this stuff is right on. many of you are uncomfortable with facing your own weaknesses

  • and watch this .... Peter Joseph London Lecture Full July 25th 2009

  • She talks about serious things, and you ignore...If you do not want to read books, see movies, such as `` The Planet... Documentary Part 1 of 9 `` or `` Zeitgeist `` and `` Zeitgeist addendum `` or `` The Age Of Stupid `` or `` THE ZEITGEIST MOVEMENT ORIENTATION PRESENTATION ``

  • 3:18 is ridiculous. She is completely and utterly wrong.

  • It makes sense

  • Please watch zeitgeist addendum on zeitgeistmovie. c o m (no spaces) , it contains the real solutions!!

  • I think she suffers from extreme low self-esteem because she's insulted by commercials. Seriously, do people go and cry in a corner because the Geiko Gecko tells you you can save 15% or more on car insurance? Is he saying "YOU SUCK!"?

  • No, she's trying to make a serious point about consumption and you, with what I can only imagine is your customary insight, are making an ad hominem attack on her. Classy.

  • @guernican

Well I'm sorry, anyone who suffers an emotional breakdown at the sight of the geico gecko has problems.

  • complete bullshit

    this is nonsense

  • I dont think I ever watched a commercial that said "you suck"

  • how do you measure happiness?

  • I have a project on this. Thats why I have to watch it.

  • I swear this woman is on drugs. She is a lunatic.

  • why is saying the truth a "LUNACY?"

  • Tell me about it. Tesla made stuff better than his last stuff. The Tower on Long Island would be twice the power of Niagara Falls. Can anyone do that stuff. Lets hold back on that stuff.

  • I don't even have enough room to comment on how idiotic these videos have been... There's not enough paper in the world to extrapolate her stupidity... and she came from Berkeley! And if that were the only things that changed in computers... they would have made it so that would be the only piece that changes... There wouldn't be Video Cards, Sound Cards, Flash Drives, Passport Drive... NONE OF THAT WOULD EXIST! Why? Because we're a society of convenience, not consumption.

  • lol, "the piece that changes each year is just a tiny little piece in the corner." uuhh no that couldnt more fucking wrong. And BLARG IT WONT FIT CAUSE ITS A DIFFERENT SHAPE and good god what a moron. Also, she's never heard of Moore's Law apparently.

  • the 99% figure is the one that stuck out to me, that has to be crap. I mean or are they counting buying food and gas?

  • "Shake off all the fears of servile prejudices, under which weak minds are servilely crouched. Fix reason firmly in her seat, and call on her tribunal for every fact, every opinion. Question with boldness even the existence of a God; because, if there be one, he must more approve of the homage of reason than that of blindfolded fear."

    ~Thomas Jefferson

  • I question the existence of Thomas Jefferson?

  • I'm calling bullshit on the 99% figure. I want proof.

  • probably. a lot of these figures are wrong.

  • "our skin is wrong" OMG stop preaching and prove a point

  • This would be a really good message if it weren't dripping with so many bullshit exaggerations.

  • If this isn't a reason to home school our children I dont know what is. Are we just supposed to stop buying things. I shop out of necessity and pleasure and I have a healthy balance of both. If people cant control there shopping then they need to take responsibility and get help for their problem.

  • I like the chip in the computer Haha

  • bs from the left

  • 3:10

    BS, total bs.

  • How are we suppost to live if we don't buy?

  • Err. learn more about computers.

  • I especially love the over-simplification of computers. "Its this little thing in the computer, its EEEEVIL!" Technology marches forward, at a startling rate. I don't know anyone that buys a computer every time a new computer is released. And hey, wasn't this made on a computer?

  • Tell me, Mrs. Socialist, are YOU going to stop buying iPods? Are you going to stop buying cars, pillows, radios, or clothes? No. You won't. Your whole argument is destroyed just on that alone.

  • I used to say leisure time but the government told me to say leesure time instead...

  • 3:03 is wrong though...

  • Agreed. For fashion it makes sense, but I found her points about technology way off. ALL components of a PC are constantly improving, but often you get to a point where to make a big jump you have to start again from the ground up.

For example, English trains run slower than French trains. Why don't we just use French trains then?? Because they're optimised for French railtracks, we'd have to tear up the entire British rail network to make them run faster, and it's the same with PCs.

  • wtf thumbs down? Look it up if you think I'm wrong. I've built PC's for years, and socket 775 and AM2 have been around for years. I wonder what 'little chip' she's talking about? If it's the chipset itself, that's integrated into the motherboard, and a lot of times if it can't handle the CPU upgrade, etc. you can usually update the BIOS to make it compatible with current hardware. Do people somehow find it surprising that older tech couldn't foresee newer tech? Meh.

  • yeah but, you gotta admit she has a point, try installing vista on an old computer and see how fast you end up @ best buy for a whole new desktop

  • The Golden Arrow! I need one. All I have is an old fashioned silver arrow.

  • you cant just replace the processor to upgrade your computer. as technology changes the structure of devices changes. i would agree that most people toss their computer too quickly, but its definitely not as simple as replacing one chip

  • does she own any stocks? have money in 401k? money in a savings account? yes?then shut up.

when you buy any stock you are asking the companies to sell more stuff and make more profits for YOU, the investor

if you dont buy stuff, you will never retire, and no one makes money

if everyone stops buying stuff, they stop making stuff, so what about the millions of people who need those jobs?

  • Once again, you're judging her based on how much she's investing/consuming rather than whether she's raising good questions about the meaning of your pathetic consumer life. You're proving her point.

  • circular logic, she is the one judging all of us on how much we are investing/consuming, yet you accuse me of doing what she is doing?

go invest all your money in the stock market, then tell all uf us to stop buying stuff, then wave your money goodbye

  • We're all watching this video on Youtube, which is a product of the Internet which is a product of fast-growing, consumer-driven technology, so by her argument we're all guilty and so is she and the organisation she stands for!

  • and the increase in technology has brought us artificial hearts, transplants, medicine, electric cars, longer life spans too. if it were not for the consumer driven society, china would still be in the stone ages, we buy its products and the people of china benifit

  • Comment removed

  • "For it is an angry and vengeful economy, yea. We need to return to our most basic of needs, yea. Bread, water, and maragaritas yea."

  • Please, PLEASE, if you believe any of what she says, watch the critique done by 'HowTheWorldWorks'

  • Its hilarious that this absolute hack job is being pushed in the skrool systems.

  • lol good old propaganda

  • OH MY GOD that was one of the funniest videos i've seen this year

apart from the gut wrenching pain mad ignorant

  • I am a teacher and I was looking for some stuff to give a lecture on consumption, i think this is the best video that i could find for my preparation...Good one

  • if this was the best you can find, you're not trying hard enough. For every good fact, there's 2 lies.

  • do u think i copied the whole idea to my kids, u must be joking...i extracted all the relevant info. and presented to my kids...and yes, pls dont send ur kids to my school, our selection unit will not give them a seat as ur attitude will be assessed! i must say u have some time on ur hands that u wrote me such a long message... thnx

  • Comment removed

  • Bahahahahaha! Great reply and thanks. Your reply speak volumes!

  • yeh too much for u to comprehend...it's never too late to learn something new!!! all the best!!!

  • 99% of stuff trashed in 6 months seems a bit high, clothes go to good will, cars get recycled or go to used car lots, tires get recycled paper get recycled etc, etc....

  • Notice how there's no definition of "stuff".

Is food included in the "stuff" we buy too? What you buy now certainly gets "trashed" after six months (in a manner of speaking).

  • well...if she counts food as the "trashed" stuff then yeah....I can see how she got 99% percent...I mean...unless you are trying to age wine or good bottle of kognack then you won't keep drinkables or edibles for more than 6 months.

Although she exaggerates stuff, the basic explanation of planned obscolescence and perceived obscolescence was good. Nike woudl love it if their consumers were willing to buy a new pair of sports shoes every 2 weeks.

  • wow , this is kind of what i'm doing after i think about it . we need to be more responsible

  • ..."the only thing changing in computers are different SHAPED processors..."

    guffaw!

    */ Jaw Drop

uhuh....this is the worst ignorant offense yet.

Good to know that many school boards have already banned this video.

  • Yes, people used less in grandma's day because we were in an economic depression.

  • Mothers, teachers, farmers, everyone is a consumer. Listen, untill your living in a hut with no utilities and making everything you use by hand, your still a consumer. And these statistics are just laughable. Propaganda at its finest.

  • If people don't buy people will lose jobs. Socialist propaganda.

  • if they hate computers and technology and all the disposable stuff in the electronic industries, then they should have made this a book, and printed it on papyrus. see how fast that gets the word out.... IDIOTS

  • wow... this is absolutly fucking retared. the " one part" of a computer that i assume she is refering to is a processor? sure the procssor speeds contunie to rise, but once it has, all the systems attaced must change to adapt. its not like there making them in diffrent shapes so we HAVE to buy more. its because the rest of the computer has to adapt to faster speeds. faster moterboards and RAM to keep up. this company is retared.

  • "we have become a nation of consumers" well what the fuck else is there other than a nation of SHIT "not mothers, not teachers, consumers....well how does the teacher buy her chalk? how does te mother get diapers, shampoo, etc. for her baby? DUH! fucking stupid hippie whore

  • Screw this, she's a propagandist. For real insight into these issues see the documentary Consuming Kids

  • 6:09 the hamster wheel. we have no life its all about production and consumption. yeah, we have more than everyone else but no free time, no family, no savings. most developed countries have 3 combined months time off, some take the entire summer off but not us the slave state.

  • this lady is so full of shit!

  • I LOVE this video!!!!

  • i'm with pardollada. everyone who is picking at tiny errors is intentionally shying away from the big argument.

who is going to stand up and say, 'actually,I think our consumerist throwaway culture is making us all happy and saving the world's future?'

  • who is going to stand up and say, 'actually,I think our consumerist throwaway culture is making us all happy and saving the world's future?'

Well I for one think there are alot of things in this "culture" that make us happier and/or have the potential to make us happier. No i myself am not perfectly happy with my life. But I dont blame the "evils" of modern civilization. if anything I would be much less happy without it.

  • She doesn't mention any other contributing factors towards a societal happiness decline after 1950 such as WW2 and the Cold War etc.

  • "To pray" I liked this video until I realized that the authors don't even recognize the greatest threat to both our planet and ourselves is magical thinking. If they endorse religion, how do they expect anyone to take responsibility for our world if God is calling all the shots? Why should we even try?

  • Yes yes!!! you got one right! Just remember Obama is telling us to buy too. If Americans can change our spending habits the other areas well have to change also. Maybe a good place to start would be making due with one income families and stop worrying about making the next (younger) generation happy.

  • CPU'S ARE NOT A DIFFERENT SHAPE!

  • That's true, but they do have different numbers of pins and sizes.

  • Everyday on my way to work in New Jersey I see the disease of consumerism. I pass houses that are 4x bigger than any house built in the previous decades. I see oversized SUV's; especially Hummers all over. It's nauseating

  • True, but ... the computer bit was a little flawed, it isn't 'just that little bit of plastic' that needs replacement... and it isn't intentional that they altered the shape of it... (ie. for a more efficient form of it).

Furthermore a interesting story, even if I do not live in the US.

  • If Annie Leonard is satisfied with such a simplistic (and flawed) understanding of computer technology, why should I believe that her other "research" is more accurate?

  • Yeah it's true !! trow away your TV!!

  • How about you throw away your computer.

  • it's inaccurate in suggesting that there's PRODUCTION in the US economy, the rest of the world produces that shit, and we are the consumers of it

how do afford stuff if we aren't PRODUCERS of anything...we BORROW

consequently you have this economy we're in, and we're headed for communism

    HAVE A NICE DAY

  • Better communism (or even better socialism) than capitalism which will destroy this planet and our species.

  • they want you to think capitalism is the problem so they can institute fascism

why woul you want communism??? you want to be a slave???

  • thx for uploadinf it!! =D

  • thank you for this!

  • thats way we are called sheep

  • We are human!
