nice voice, nice technique, but, this song is all about the head voice in the middle part of the song...if you cannot sing this part, dont even touch the whole song...its like a put off, when we all expect to hear the head voice.
God Bless you & May the Savior delight you every day and give you the utmost joy, health & wealth of mind, these are the most important merits & grace that we all strongly need.We search for eternity not for material vanishing temptations. The afterlife is eternal whereas life has a limit & death means the death of the body but the immortality of soul.So let's all do the good and pray for peace especially in Syria after we had witnessed the most evil murders committed Vs freedom of expression.
I love it very much, because he can do beautiful things with his voice- but I miss the emotion- it sounds very held back to my ears- but very good non the less ! ^_^
My God ! What a singer ! He should be a superstar with his voice, aura and actor's talent ! I do believe he will be, just a question of time. All the best and huge luck for amazing singer Lawrence Gray !!!
I just love this version of this great song. So understated but stunningly beautiful compared to the usual histrionic versions. Lawrence Gray is a truly international star!!!
Lawrence really you're awsome and wonderful; you got that winning voice! You won the heart & soul of your listeners with your superb singing performance!!! Bravo; thumbs up for you!
Well,he's a very good singer...but I agree that if there are no screams on it in the right parts,it doesn't feel like the right song. There's that spicy ingredient missing in this performance....sorry. Would rather have Gillan,Neeley,or Balsamo singing it.
If he's been classically trained, as my son was, his vocal coach would have a fit if he 'abused' his voice by screaming the way that Neeley does. I do agree tho, Neeley set the gold standard for this piece..
Obviously a truly magnificent performance but being a huge JCS fan I find that it is forbidden to sing this song without doing the screams. It has nothing to do with this performer he is truly amazing this just is not right. Andrea Boccelli is truly one of the worlds best singers but I would not wanna here this song performed by him. It takes a rocker to sing this song otherwise it doesn't have the right feel.
(You raise me up is perfect for Gray that's what he should be singing)
Aren't the notes at the end high enough? This is the "Michael Ball" version. I prefer this version and It takes alot of talent and a really exceptional voice to sing it the way Lawrence Gray does!!
And as someone pointed out earlier on, Ted Neely's version in the film is recorded while Lawrence Gray here is singing LIVE!
Untrue. Ian Gillan sang on the original concept album, but turned down the film. Neeley did his own singing in the film and has performed the role on stage many times before and after the film.
This is correct - Ian Gillian was too busy with touring and recording obligations and Ted Neeley, who covered and eventually replaced Ian Gillian sung the role in his place. The soundtrack was recorded some months before the filming took place in Israel - which means that the performers were dubbing their vocals.
Ian Gillan was too busy with touring. He turned down JCS both on stage and on film. Jeff Fenholt became the original Jesus on Broadway and in the pre-Broadway concert tour, while Ted Neeley understudied Fenholt and opened the show as Jesus in Los Angeles. The film was cast largely by open audition after Gillan backed out. Neeley auditioned for the film at the last minute (having already joined the cast of Tommy by this time) and wound up getting the role.
outstanding, incredible performance. You can feel the pain in his voice. Unfortunatelly he doesn't even try to hit the high tones and that's why this version looses a lot against Ted Neeley's or Drew Sarich's ....
OMG...his voice is amazing. I have not heard of him. What a beautiful performance. This is one of the very first musicals I ever saw in London in 19689.
He sends shivers up and down my spine! Stunning!! Gave me goosebumps too. A very powerful singer, one that should go Platinum, if he hasn't already. I will definitely be looking for more of his videos on You Tube and hope he has an album out there somewhere.
This guy is great..Awesome voice and emotion. I can't decide if i like it better sung like this or when it is sung up an octave for that really high G. Steve Balsamo sings this really well too
Lawrence Gray has a very passionate voice. He sings from the depths of his heart. Not only is his voice very nice, but it carries passion, making it all the more exceptional. It stands out in a very beautiful way. A nice voice is not the same as a passionate voice. It is as if you can relate. (your heart to his) Being in one accord. What a gifted voice God gave him!
I am Maltese and I certainly appreciate Lawrence Gray's talent!!
I love all his songs but this is my favorite. It is the song which mostly brings out the beauty and power of his majestic voice. And it takes enormous talent to sing this song as it certainly is not an easy song to sing!!
Forsi bhalek ftit hawn habib.. Hawn hafna min ma japrezzax it-talent malti..bhal ma hawn min ma japrezzax il lingwa maltija u juza il lingwa ingliza biex iwassa xi messag u jghir xi affarijiet..
Greatpotential turned me on to Lawrence Gray! Praise God! This is something that a person may not understand the depth of, until they are called by God into ministry and as they are going through the process of change into holiness, at some point that reality hits them! The called who obey will understand what it means symbolically to take up their cross to carry the torch after Jesus' likeness!
I, too, was introduced to this man via Susan Boyle's site (one of them!) and I am so very impressed! I will pass it on to all I know here. Thank you for the posting! I will order some of his music! Bravo, from Colorado!
I think both Lawrence Gray and Neely give a really excellent rendition of Gethsemane. However, you cannot compare them as they sing different interpretations of the song. However, both are really exceptional!!!
wow.... have i been living under a rock? i just found his name when i read a comment someone wrote on susan boyle's clip and decided to have a look. I need to find out some more about Lawrence Gray... another STAR in the making!!!!
Lawrence, I wish you had been singing the role of Jesus in the performance I saw a few years ago in San Antonio, because the audience could not understand a word he spoke or sang. You have the total package. Good Luck.
Can anyone please tell me if Lawrence has released an album, and if so what is it called? This man is incredible! I didnt think that anyone would ever be able to match Ted Neelys performance, but I have to say this is amazing. Well done Lawrence - your voice is beautiful. God Bless. x
I don't know about that, but I have heard and reheard the part you say and it seems just perfect to me!!! In fact the whole song is perfect from beginning to end!!! This is one of the very best interpretations of "Gethsemane" which exist. Lawrence Gray has an excellent voice!!!
He is a fantastic singer!!! I am more of the musical theater buff and love Steve Balsamo to the end. But he brought something to the plate - a great tenor voice, fantastic artistry. Oh, I predict he will make it to Broadway if he continues to sing! 5 out of 5 stars!!
I really love Lawrence Gray's amazing voice!!! I just never get tired of hearing him sing!! "Gethsemane" is one of my favourite songs....hope to see Lawrence at Eurovision next year.
i just cannot understand how this guy has never represented malta in the eurovision song contest. i bet it is not 100% fair how the winner is chosen!! this guy had many good songs and never won!! he has a great voice. some times when i hear him i just wonder where that beautiful amazing voice comes from...
btw he is cute when he looks aside in 2.00 in this video :)
This is a really great performance by Lawrence Gray!!! Well done Lawrence!! I hope that next year you will be the one to represent Malta at Eurovision. With your stunning voice and a great song, Malta can finally win Eurovision. I am sure of that!
Thanks for your point of view talentlover. This is a great version, better than MB's in my opinion. This was originally billed as a Rock opera. ALW's later stuff was very very watered down in terms of delivery compared to the original JCS. I think this and Balls version are too ordinary in terms of delivery, which kind of opposes the original concept.
I am so glad you like Lawrence's voice and interpretation... However, I do not agree that a song "should" be sung in a particular way. It is true that the original version by Ian Gillan was different. Lawrence sings the Michael Ball version. Some people (including myself) prefer this version to the original rock version. It is just a matter of taste. What is important is that people appreciate each version of the song.
Lawrence Gray is a fantastic singer!! He is brilliant live! We are really lucky in Malta to have an artist of his calibre.... Thanks for posting this. Please upload more Lawrence Gray videos.
I ain't bothered if Lawrence Gray sings from musicals, ballads, pop or just in the bath at home. This guy has a phenomenal voice that brings me out in goosebumps every time I hear him!!! Well done Lawrence!!
I agree with primadonna. Lawrence Gray is appreciated in Malta. I am a great fan of his & have been following him for quite some time now. Lawrence took part in the Malta Song for Europe 6 times. He came twice 2nd, once 3rd and twice 4th. With "Why Not" he had even won the televoting. If Lawrence weren't appreciated would he have always placed well & even won televoting? I don't think so!! Many Maltese are eager & waiting for Mr.Gray to take part again in the Eurosong. He would win for sure!!!
So mych fielings, so mych voice! Congratulation"

i just cannot understand how this guy has never represented malta in the eurovision song contest. i bet it is not 100% fair how the winner is chosen!! this guy had many good songs and never won!! he has a great voice. some times when i hear him i just wonder where that beautiful amazing voice comes from...
btw he is cute when he looks aside in 2.00 in this video :)

Eurovision is a POP song contest. This guy is just too professional for eurovision.

This is a nice version, he has a lovely tenor voice. Listen to the original version by Ian Gillan to understand how this should really be sung
